King's Lynn
St Margarets Plan for today. Enjoy a delightful breakfast. Collect our washing and drive to a laundromat in King’s Lynn. Discover the Norfolk beaches. Finish the day with a Sunday roast at the pub. What a grand day out.
Unfortunately reality kicks in. We wake to the sound of rain drops. It could still be a day at the beach. The locals do it. But first we do enjoy a delightful breakfast. Not quite the full English but certainly some aspects of it, especially the farm fresh eggs that the hosts’ hens have just laid. The rain is not heavy but might interrupt the day’s activities, we’ll see.
We leave our little house and drive to King’s Lynn and the laundromat that we have identified as the perfect location for the travellers’ wash. We are confronted by a bank of washing machines. The instructions are as simple as 1,2,3. Thirty-five minutes later the wash is ready for the dryer. Clothes for the dryer go in and less than twenty minutes later all is done.
The rain has not come to anything so we have time for a walk around the city of King’s Lynn. We have an interesting moment with
the pay and display machine. The machine makes a special request. “Please enter the last three letters of your registration plate”. We don’t have three last letters on our French plate. A friendly local says just put in a random letter then the last two letters. Now it will take our money. Our tour takes us past St Margaret’s Church, we hear the congregation in full voice. The Great Ouse River enters the Wash at King’s Lynn so a visit to the port is one of the sights on the scenic tour. The river has meandered through the English countryside and now it looks wide but not very sparkling. Perhaps it needs the sun. Time for some lunch.
In the shopping area people are enjoying the summer sales. The sky is threatening. The muffin and coffee tastes nice. We emerge from the cafe just in time for the afternoon rain. A quick walk back to the car then plot a course for the beach. As we get closer to the water front we pass row upon row of relocatable cabins either already occupied or waiting to be occupied. The beach is empty. Everyone is at the nearby amusement arcades.

The shopping centre Today is the sort of day the owners of these arcades really love. On a hot sunny day it would be a different matter. We drive around Wells-Next-The-Sea. Parking is an issue. Everyone has come for a day out. Children are fishing off the harbour wall, the amusement arcades are very busy, people are sitting around in the drizzle eating fish and chips from Britain’s best fish and chip shop. Everyone is happy. The narrow country roads are crowded with Sunday drivers looking for somewhere to enjoy an afternoon stop, perhaps they’ll have tea with scones and cream.
We have one more drive by. Sandringham, the Royal Country Estate. The drive through this estate is picturesque. Most of what we see is very wooded. Every now and then you get a glimpse of the buildings. The carparks are full with people visiting the estate. Many people are enjoying a picnic on the very wide grass verges. Light rain continues intermittently.
Back at our accommodation we talk through our experiences with our host. She tells us about the young Royals and how often Kate and the children are seen in the local villages doing some grocery shopping. They are
just a normal family going about their daily lives. We on the other hand go to the local pub for the roast. Sorry, the roast is only at lunch time. The pub is quiet tonight but we still have a Lite Bite and another dessert. Just as well the pub is closed on Mondays.
Tomorrow it will be sunny.
