Last Training Day - Tenbury, Ludlow & Leintwardine
Published: April 22nd 2012Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire » LeintwardineLast team training day before we head off to Lithuania was a great day, considering the forecast was storms and heavy rain. We got to Leintwardine to stop for a pint and joined the St. George celebrations though unfortunately we couldn't stay to watch George slaying the dragon....great Venison burger! We narrowly avoided starting a stampede of cattle and faced many obstacles (such as 580 metres of climb!) to win the day.... read more
Our Oxford Odyssey
Published: April 8th 2012Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire » Hemel HempsteadWe traveled about 60 miles Saturday to see our dear friend, Jenny Harmes who has moved here from New Zealand. This area is called the Chilterns and it was quite different from the Cotswolds. We were much closer to London and some of the towns were very new and very big. The countryside though was delightful. Rolling hills with each field marked by hedges. The villages charming with their old churches and usually a pub being the center of the village. Jenny took us for a scenic drive at the Ashridge Estate which is now a National Trust reserve of over 5000 acres of woodland, walking paths and cycling paths. We saw one small herd of deer. It was just about the coldest day, so we were happy to look from the car. The view of ... read more
Coast Path Adventure Day 16: A Trip Inland, Schoolboy Errors And The Manly (Stupid) Option
Published: July 27th 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire » Hereford23rd June 4pm Hereford Day 16 Now anyone reading this that has an aptitude for geography will note that Hereford is not in Wales. This is because I have decided to take a few days off from my coastal trek, mainly at the behest of a certain young English lady who decided to take a few days off work and requested the pleasure of my company while doing so. So far be it from me to deny a lady her wishes, and always being willing to see more of the great British countryside, I boarded a train at Milford Haven this morning and made my way back on to English soil. After all, I figured I’ve earned a bit of R&R after the last few days (not that I really have to justify myself to anyone, ... read more
The trip we nearly did not make
Published: May 29th 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » HerefordshireThis is a trip we nearly didn't make... I wanted to record it anyway. The plan was to take off from work early Thursday and head down to Froxfield, Friday morning head off to Symonds Yat. Then, on Tuesday, just before dinner, I (Hilary) fell unconscious in the downstairs corridor getting a spectacular black eye in the process. Ashley couldn't rouse me so he called 999. I was in hospital for 72 hours where no good explanation for the black out was found. Out in time to head out to Froxfield a little later than planned. The weather was not good. Intermittent heavy showers meant that when we arrived at The Pelican the bike was no longer shiney. We were tired and wet. We managed to completely mistime things so that we missed visiting Ashley's brother. ... read more
Straddling the border ... Offa's Dyke Path
Published: May 24th 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire » KingtonYou ever have one of those days when your body feels broken and you wonder why you put yourself through it? I admit it I'm shattered after another hiking weekend of misrepresented hike lengths (tip ... add at least half again to any number told!) and body parts which keep failing to meet my personal expectations! On the plus side I did sleep well and NO BLISTERS which after the last few trips is a miracle!!! The Welsh border lands (the Welsh Marches) and walking along the Offa's Dyke Path is one of the great walks in the United Kingdom (apparently). The Path stretches 177 miles from Chepstow in South Wales all the way up to Prestatyn on Liverpool Bay right up north. This weekend we got to played on two different bits of the Path. ... read more
Norfolk to Wales and the Royal Wedding
Published: April 30th 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire » LedburyHi everyone We've just finished watching the royal wedding and it was a splendid occasion. The weather was fine and sunny at times which made it a much nicer event for the crowds. They were forecasting 600,000 people along the route but I'd be surprised if there weren't more than that. The pomp and pageantry was quite majestic and the bride's dress was stunning (as you all know). It was quite a contrast from Princess Diana's meringue dress. There were a few references to Princess Diana by the BBC correspondents but they didn't harp on about it. Helen, bless her bought some bunting that we put up as part of the celebration...you'll be able to see that in the photos. We also had union jack serviettes and paper plates. So it was a very British event! ... read more
Hi everyone We are now in Wellington Heath, Herefordshire with our dear friends Helen and Gavin. You know how it's very British to talk about the weather well I must tell you what's going on. It’s incredibly sunny and warm. Yes, I did say we are in England!! Yesterday it was 26 degrees....imagine that! It was warmer than Brisbane which was 22 degrees. The consequence of this is that there are a lot of very pale people (myself excepted) getting a few rays. Much to Peter's chagrin, I raided a few of the Ledbury op shops to buy some semi-summerish clothes. Peter restrained himself from saying you don't need those and how will we fit them into the suitcase. I think he's finally given up! This morning we did our pilgrimage to the butchers shop in ... read more
Historic Walk around Ledbury
Published: March 28th 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire » LedburyShort Night The clocks went forward tonight so not too much sleep. Not sure if either of the pillows he had bought yesterday was quite right. It's a bit like Goldilocks. The memory foam was a little small (but it would save space), the other one was too big (though it would probably compress with age). We are having a pillow review when we get home! We walked up the old railway line into the centre of Ledbury for a guided walk with the retiring chairman of the Civic Society. Found out a lot I didn't know but it was so COLD. As soon as he finished we rushed back to the Plume of Feathers for Sunday Lunch, only to find a couple of us who were half way through theirs as they had not completed ... read more
Saturday - Puppy with the Puddle
Published: March 28th 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire » LedburyNot the Walk We opted out of the walk as we had done part of it last month and wanted to chill a bit. We had a slow start chatting to some of the other non-walkers, then set off to the centre of Ledbury with a few things to buy and remembered what an interesting place Ledbury is, some shops had closed since we were last there and the cafe in the cook shop/deli had closed. Coffee and cakes in the Internet Cafe that has a poet/story/song session once a month that we have never been to, but I thought was off the other way! Fairly successful with our shopping and walked back to the Rugby Club, the people on the walk had arrived back in Ledbury not too late for lunch. Unfortuneatly our Van was ... read more
Packing up the van
Published: March 25th 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire » LedburyList making I attempted to form a list for our first trip and that was pretty comprehensive. I deliberately missed out some things I should have taken. Water management is a question and which camping club is the best to join. Embarrassment Arrived at Ledbury Rugby Club and parked up in neat lines on car park. Some had taken to the grass, but they were staying longer and looked a bit too close to the action. The large puddle under our van was put down to overfilling the cold water tank........ I had done this at home on a slope so seemed a reasonable explanation. Over 25 Murvies due for the weekend, our first chance to compare and contrast. Warm welcome from all and invited Simon (Garf) and Jess (the other local owners who we knew ... read more
