Well..... its over. Our travels have reached their conclusion, the adventure has come to an end, and we're now back on the same landmass as you guys. However, this blog is far from finished: despite being home for nearly a month, there is still much island-hopping, volcano climbing, temple visiting, and dodgy transport riding, to catch up on from our final 6 weeks in Indonesia and Malaysia. This last period was one of the busiest; with the flight back home looming ever closer on the horizon, we attempted to cram in as much as possible. There have also been many blog-worthy occurrences since our return to Blighty - with a short trip to France, and a longer visit to Manchester - and this is what we'll cover in the following paragraphs. But, never fear, we still ... read more

Today we went into Manchester and caught the 11.15am screening of Terminator Salvation. Going to the early screening ended up being a real bargain with all tickets before midday being just £4.00 each! When we were buying our tickets at about 11.25am we asked if the movie would have started yet. The guy on the ticket counter assured us that we would be fine to catch the start of the movie. As it turned out we had heaps of time. We still saw four previews before the movie finally started at about 11.40am. In the end I think all we missed was the advertising! We both enjoyed the movie. Neither of us could remember enough detail from earlier installments to decide if there are any glaring continuity issues with it or not??! From The Printworks we ... read more

Richard Frost - Manchester Today is cold, wet and cloudy, which can mean only one thing - we're back home in Manchester! It's been an exhilerating journey and a good deal more than we bargained for. The original plan called for 3 months, the reality was 5. The aim was to visit 6 countries, it ended up being 9. We each stuffed 1 novel in the backpack, but ended up reading 14. A lot has happened. We've visited Chinese pagodas, Buddhist wats, Hindu shrines, Christian cathedrals and Muslim mosques; slept in hotels and jungles; met some amazing locals and lifelong travellers; and seen our bank balances evaporate. But emphatically it's been worth it, and it's rare you can honestly say you've enjoyed every minute. To see first-hand the conditions in other countries makes you appreciate all ... read more

Bernie’s birthday today, so I let him choose what we would do for the day. He decided on a visit to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester. TomTom guided us to the museum brilliantly. Despite it being bank holiday Monday it was reasonably quiet at the museum. With the weather being so good most people probably opted to head for the coast or the country rather than a museum in the city?! We checked out the temporary exhibition area first and looked at their newly opened display dedicated to prisoners or war. Next we proceeded to the permanent exhibition area which is really well laid out in a chronological time-line starting with WWI, then WWII, Korean and Vietnamese wars through to present day conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq. After the museum we went up to the ... read more

Today started just grand. Woke up around 10am and had a long ass shower. Nice showers but only thing was that my roomie the African lad from Nigeria also wanted a shower at the same time which gave me like no water pressure but i wasnt complaining. HA i guess i am now but its crazy cause it was only two of us and there were like 8 showers oh well. So i got up and had some tea and toast cause that was the only thing free in the whole place haha. I spent sometime on the net looking up Coronation st to try and visit and some emailing. My plan today was to watch the match which was actually a Derby pronounced darby with the two nice ladies from the night before (Claire and ... read more

Ok this is the calm before the storm. The tickets are booked and paid for, work have been informed and i'm now protected against nasty tropical diseases. So with a sore arm I'm now just counting down the time until I go with just a hint of foreboding doom about the journey, with tints of apprehension about leaving some very special people behind (you know who you are) but with an overwhelming feeling of excitement about the adventure that lies ahead. I'm notoriously bad at keeping up-to-date with journals, starting off with fearless boasts about writing a torrent everyday but inevitably trailing off to a pathetic trickle by the end but with this one i hope to be more on the ball. So thanks for subscribing to this. I hope to keep you well informed about ... read more

March - four weekends and four trips … hey, something sounds familiar there … Keeping with tradition, I spent my weekends *in* Manchester, mostly not actually in Manchester! Biggest excitement of the month was my first flight since the start of January with a three day trip to Finland’s capital of Helsinki. Main attraction for me was a concert by Antony and the Johnsons, an amazing band (well singer) who I have obsessed over for a few years now. The concert was truly amazing and Helsinki itself was definitely worth the visit - very similar to Oslo, lots of lovely buildings, super expensive (Aussie $13 for beer, $15 for my compulsory morning latte and pulla pastry) and damn cold. A special treat were the harbour areas that were partly or fully covered in ice. Given that ... read more
