Capitalism, Schmapitalism I've been working for about a month now. At a headhunter. Do you know what a headhunter does? They recruit people who probably HAVE jobs already, for other jobs that probably pay better. And they charge for it. A lot. For example, to recruit a CEO for another CEO job, the fee is roughly 30% of what their new salary would be. So if they get hired for their new job and they get paid 150,000, my employer would charge that company 50,000 for that one person. And there are lots of companies. And thousands of people. That means a ridiculous amount of money for moving one person from one company to another company. It's the rat race at its best. People with the most letters after their name win. It's a cash grab ... read more

Updates about the past few weeks Work Work is going okay, I was definitely spoiled by my last job, having people I absolutely adore around me every single day. Great friendships, laughs and chemistry. This time around, has an adjusting period - I am the new girl at school again, and while that's been okay, about 80% of the people I see on a daily basis are in their 40s or above. I am used to being around people in their 20s. It's been a ride. I can't complain though. Locally// I went to the Thames Festival last weekend. Those are the pictures below. The first set are of a performance we caught by the River Thames, right beside the Tower of London Bridge, the second set are of a guy playing this thing called the ... read more

So, it's nearly time for us to leave! 10 days to go...... Welcome to travelblog. I was introduced to this site by friends I met in Bermuda, Steve and Sophie Ludgate, who did a fantastic job on keeping us updated with their round the world trip a few years ago. For those that know them I guarantee you now that I won't be doing as good a job, but I'll try!! So on September 18 we start on our round the world trip. We fly to Dubai to spend 10 days with the Dingle family, then onto Hong Kong to visit my family. We then start our epic 28 day tour from HK up to Beijing with Intrepid, through Shanghai and Xian (tour CSN for anyone interested!). Thanks to all those that contributed to this through ... read more

BUNAC organized a trip to Amsterdam So I seized the moment, and this past bank holiday weekend, I added two new countries to my list of visited countries: The Netherlands & Belgium We had to meet at the International Student House @ 6:00am on Saturday morning. I live about 20 minutes by tube away. So, what's the next option - get on the FIRST tube of the day from Canary Wharf tube station - which was @ 5:25am. I woke up at 4am, to get ready and out of the flat by 5am. Walk to the tube with time to spare, OTHERWISE, I will miss it. Luckily the area I live in, is a SAFE area -- so there are NO problems walking out and about at 5am on a Saturday morning - trust me. There ... read more

Holland, Amsterdam, the Netherlands - Geweldig!!!! It's my 3rd country in Europe (England & France last year). Even though it's just for the weekend I'm super excited. Get to see the canals, architecture and all the other sites of Holland. I do believe my Papa is the only one in my immediate family who has been to Holland (other than sisters tho). Papa, this is for you! 3 I'm excited to meet new people on this trip; I've been here 3 weeks and I've made great friends thus far. I wonder how many more in the next 2 years! What do you mean the last time we saw each other was the wedding?! I went for dinner and drinks with 'cousin' (easiest explanation we could find) Cassie last nite. Mexican food, daiquiris galore and catchup talks. ... read more

Reflection What makes England so much more exciting than Toronto? I mean Toronto has a lot of things to offer as well, but why is it that I've been to London for two weeks now, and I feel like I've done more in two weeks here than I ever would in a month in Toronto. It's the choices you make really; I would have to think twice about going to a pub on a random Wednesday night in Toronto. London, not even a second thought. I've taken a lot of things for granted in Toronto - it's sights, sounds, people, places - everything. Because I've lived there for 20 years, everything was always at my disposal, always there, I can go whenever. London, I have two years to do everything I want. So it's limited. But ... read more

Definitely hitting the ground running... It's been 9 days since I've moved to London - and I've already settled the essentials, friends, flat and funds. I am starting my new job on Monday (Thank God!!!). Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers as I made the transition over, they definitely helped alot. I can't help but feel like I'm channelling my mother on these things. I remembered when we moved back to Toronto from California, she had everything taken care of in a matter of days if not hours. =P One of the best things I could ever inherit from my mother (other than my cuteness, of course) is her ability to get the job done in no time flat. She has a knack for being organized and I definitely inherited the "ACTION AGAD" gene ... read more

So, where do I live? I can now confidently answer - London, England. I moved into a flat today - it's nearby Canary Wharf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canary_Wharf), with great views of the River Thames. How did I get here? Well, I live with my friend Carolyn, who I've known for 7 years. She moved here for graduate school and currently lives here for the time being. Her room mate moved out at the end of the month, and I took over. Timing was definitely on my side with this one. So far so good, the trek to England went smoothly, even with a weird stop over in Iceland. At least I can say I've been to Iceland (specifically Kevlavik Airport only). For the past two days, I've just been enjoying the days, met some great friends already, thru ... read more

After what seems an age of reasearch, visiting shops, online comparing and deliberating, a variety of rucksacks, approach shoes, sleeping bags and waterproof liners should all now be winging their way to us from various internet companies across the land. We won't list everything out as we don't want to give any of you techy types the satisfaction of telling us "... Ohhh, I wouldn't have bought that one" or "Why on earth didn't you get the...." (Waitey, Danny and Ric insert favourite brands here). Suffice to say that North Face, Salomon, Lowe Alpine and Exped are involved, with only limited reliance on Quecha technology..... Anyway, only five weeks to go before we leave... the party venue is now booked for Saturday August 22nd @ my favourite pub in London, The Three Kings in Clerkenwell, so ... read more
