Today I woke up early. WAY early. It must have been at least 7 am. Let me just say that back home, unless I have school or work, I don’t wake up before noon, so this waking up early business is a culture shock in itself. We ate breakfast and met Arabella, who walked us to the local monastery. At the monastery, brother Thomas gave us a tour, and explained its amazing history. After the tour, we walked to a local cheese making facility and were given the opportunity to try several samples. The samples we ate were different from American Swiss-cheese. American Swiss-cheese has virtually no taste and is full of holes. Swiss Swiss-cheese is completely different, however, having no holes and being VERY strong. After that, myself, Ashley, Vanessa, Elizabeth, and Chris walked through ... read more

Hi All Today Margret took us to Lucerne, a great little city about 1 and a bit hours away. It is located on Lake Lucerne, and as you would expect, has hundreds and hundreds years of history. We visited the lion monument that was carved in 1820-21 to commemorate Swiss guards who gave their lives trying to protect the French Royal family during the French Revolution - needless to say a number lost their lives. As I have said before, I am not a student of art, but the size and detail of the lion is amazing. Following this we went for a wander through the town and its many shops - managed to find and sample some great Swiss Chocolate. As usual with Swiss towns, it clean, tidy and organised - with history all around. ... read more

Well, my mom finally made it to Europe. This visit included my Uncle Joe and Aunt Lien as well. These are just a few pictures I took of the various places we traveled. I met them in Frankfurt at about 9 am in the airport. They, of course, had a long flight and were beat. Unfortunately, Aunt Lien was feeling a bit under the weather. So, we did what we had to do. We went to pick up the car and prepared to get under way to Lucerne. As you know, one of my favorite places. Picking up the car in Europe is never as easy as it is in the States. My Uncle asked for a automatic transmission, GPS, and permission to drive into Poland and other old Eastern European countries. After we had signed ... read more

DATELINE: Saturday, April 18, AARGAU, and points west. Before resuming the account of my Swiss adventure, I should mention that TravelBlog experienced a global server problem which includes lost photos of numerous bloggers during my journey. Two of my earlier entries presently have black boxes instead of photos. TB is working hard to restore the images from backup files, where possible. Some photos may have to be re-entered by authors. (I really love this site, and wish the owners well in their efforts at recovery of missing info. Life happens, and we will all move forward. Could such losses be why Socrates had no trust of the written word, but placed great emphasis on memory and recitation?) I should also mention that several individuals who have left messages for me on the site have only just ... read more

Four days of straw-hat knotting in Ballenberg was followed by an extra day to explore the grounds of the museum, which is truly amazing. I imagine the grounds to be about 100 acres, laid out over a series of footpaths. It makes for a very pleasant stroll. And there are numerous active demonstrations along the way of folk crafts, such as cheese making, iron working, meat smoking, etc. And there are several fitting cafes interspersed, (but no MacDonalds, of course). Last night I was offered a ride to Aargau, where I want to visit a straw museum, by a couple I met at dinner. (Initially I had declined after learning the timing was too tight; but I then learned the museum was open Sunday, so I accepted the offer.) More about this surprise turn of events ... read more

It's all happening so fast! I'm sorry I haven't been able to document my arrival here in Switzerland to the degree I had hoped. My computer apparently doesn't speak German, as I wasn't able to get onto the school's wireless network yesterday, the first day of classes, even with their password. (The school is not "near" Berne, as I thought; it's in the Interlaken district.) Apparently everything is near Berne in this tiny country; but it would be closer to say it's near Brienz. (The nearest village is called Hofstetten.) Well, the staff very kindly gave me a hardwire connection; and they are allowing me to work late to take care of my self-assigned internet "homework." Kurszentrum Ballenberg is affiliated with, and adjacent to the Freilicht Museum. The school has many handwerk krafts which are very ... read more

First stop at Gruyere, where we visited a cheese factory. Then to the old town, with its medieval castle and walls. Interesting bar there, designed by Giger, famous for 'Alien'. Then onto the capital Berne, a charming town with arcaded shops, carved fountains and towers. Saw Einstein's house, where he wrote some of his famous theories. Also the bear pit, with a couple of lonely brown bears, the symbol of the capital. After lunch, drove via the shores of Lake Thun to Interlaken, with great views of the Jungfrau mountain. Watched hang gliders land in the park. Overnight stop at Lungern, a little rural town near Lake Lucerne. ... read more

One of the trips I wanted to take my mom, my Uncle Joe, and my Aunt Lien on while they are in Switzerland is the Golden Pass Line train ride from Lucerne to Montreux. I was not really sure how to work this deal. But, I did eventually find out. Okay, here it is. In the winter, there are only two "real" Golden Pass Line trains per day. I missed them both, I guess. Now, you can still "do" the ride, just on regular trains. Is it a big deal that you don't do the "real" train. Well, my understanding of it is that the "real" train does not make as many stops and changes along the way. Or at least that is my impression of the situation. I took the regular train and it was ... read more
