After leaving Colmar in Alsace, we made our way south to Switzerland. First stop to pay the highway tax in Basel. If you don't pay it, you end up hours on small roads, and I'm not sure this is a great idea with two wonderful monsters sitting in the back of the car. I need to point that so far, they have been impressive and well behave at the back of the car...I'm wondering what is the real effect of the candies we bought in Holland with Ma'ri for them few days ago! The first game we played was...count the number of tunnels we are going through...but Leslie lost count very soon considering the number of tunnels. I think the longest one we went in Switzerland was around 6km. 14 years ago I cross Switzerland from ... read more

OK, good times in Greece, but good to be out of the Aegean and on to new places. Munich was Munich. Not a bad city, but nothing really special. Not trying to offend anyone out there, but it is what it is. Had a beer at the Hauphbrauhaus or however you spell it, but went out to a local beer hall with some people in the hostel that was a lot better with no tourists. Had my first purple cabbage there and first pork knuckle or whatever it was. Train left this am at 7, so not much sleep, but had an amazing night hanging with about 10 people. One was a Penn State grad, 3 Aussies, 3 from British Columbia, one from Charlotte, and a teacher from NY. INteresting mix, but we hung out from ... read more

We are now in Switzerland. After a bit of a faux pas. Kay abd Dave weren not able to get off the train at our first stop. We were on the platform and the doors closed and off they went to Zug. Ahhhhh******* They did buy tickets back to where we were and we ALL went to Lucerne. But let me back up. We toured Pompeii and marveled at the old-ness of the ruins. The day was hot so were glad for the bus ride back to Rome. Saturday we toured palentine hill and the forum. Al was in heaven. He got to walk where the Romans walked. Ate, well again, at a street side cafe before setting off for more ruins and a museum of pre-history Rome. Sunday was the travel day to Venice. We ... read more

We left Geneva bound for Lucerne via Montreaux. We were advised by one of Richards work colleague, Phillip, to take the Golden Pass train through the countryside as it was spectacular and we were not disappointed. We arrived in Montreaux and disembarked for a wander. It was picture perfect, with its colourful yellow or red umbrella awnings along the hotels facing the lake. We caugh a bus to Chateau de Chillon which was a very well preserved castle on the lake, it is steeped in history as is all of Europe. We were able to walk through the dungeon where Byron had spent some time. We wandered the huge dining and bed rooms, walked along the high wooden walkways where the gaurds would take their post. About 2 hours later we caught a bus back to ... read more

While touring the 5 star Victoria- Jungfrau we found out that it was the first hotel to have light’s and the hotel use to be two separate houses the Victoria and Jungfrau which are not combined together with the spa and lobby area. They have 212 rooms and a tower suite that you enter into through the elevator in the lobby. The rack rate is 690 and the tower is 5,000. The average room rate is 460 due to corporate rates, group rates, etc. The Swiss people occupy the hotel most of the time at 42%, and then comes Americans and so on. With all these rooms the staff is pretty big. They have 300 employees, 50 technical people and 47 chief’s with three kitchens. Because they have such a big hotel they do not do ... read more

Ashley, Elz, Ryan, and I set off into the rain today on our own eight feet to Lucerne, It was a blast! Day 7 of our European Excursion was designated to be a free day, and Lucerne was calling our name! We originally had wanted to take our swimsuits and lay out at the lake after lunch, however, this morning it was pretty chilly and drizzly so we scratched that off the list of options. None-the-less, at 11:45 a.m. we left the Engelberg train station. It was my first real train ride and it was pretty cool. The best part was when we stood outside of the train door for about ten seconds trying to figure out how to open the dang door. haha! Ryan of all people was the captain of this operation and if ... read more

Today was our free day, so I of course slept in. It felt soo nice. When I got up and about, a group of us headed into Lucerne by train. We ate lunch at a place called Cafeteria Emilio. I got a cheeseburger and it was neat to see how they had taken an American food and made it theirs, I liked it. Then we went to the big souvenir shop where all the Indians liked to shop and got some presents for people back home (I can't say what I got because I know some of those people are reading this blog) Then shopped around for ourselves. I told myself that I wasn't going to buy anything, but there were these two dresses just calling my name and I couldn't leave them back in Switzerland, ... read more

Day three was all-in-all a marvelous treat; probably my favorite day yet. Don't get too excited for me though, one shall not forget the expression, in order to appreciate sunshine, you must also experience the rain. I began the day with a jog along side Mrs. Bradley. I just love to hear her stories. We followed up our jog with breakfast, got ready, and then the group met downstairs for our trip to Seelisburg to visit a family owned and operated organic cheese-making facility. It is a fourth generation factory and employs 16 local farmers, 14 of which are cousins to the Aschwanden family (the founding and still operating family.) For reasons such as to keep employment rates up, business in dairy is vital to the Swiss culture. Without these facilities, there would be many farmers, ... read more

This morning we started out by going to a cheese factory. The trip to get there was an adventure in itself. The winding hills, and driver who I think learned to drive a stick shift yesterday, were not a good combination on some people's tummys to say the least. When we finally figured out how to get there after turning around several times, I knew we were in for a treat. The struggle to get there was well worth it. Hans IV was so fun to listen to and so passionate about his cheese. He showed us what all it took to make cheese in his little cheese factory he had connected to his house in Seelisberg. His dad, who was once in charge of the company was an energetic old man and you could just ... read more
