Me and Enrico spent yesterday shopping in central Stockholm, and then walked to the Vasa museum where a very well preserved battle ship from 1628 is on display. We walked all the way there in the sunshine. Actually, we walkded much further then we had expected. As you might know Stockholm is situated on a series of islands with bridges in between. These bridges are not always where you want them to be. And Enrico assumed that I, being Swedish, knew my way around Stockholm (haha!) so we ended up walking all the way around this little island called Skeppsholmen from which we could see our destination across the water but we couldn't reach it. Very frustrating. But we had some gorgeous views of Stockholm from Skeppsholmen, and there were plenty of beautiful boats and ships ... read more

Well, we've been in Stockholm for three days and have finally found a better hostel. In the mean time we've been to the National Museum and seen all those awesome Viking finds we've all just read about including the Mastamyr chest :-) We've been to the Vasa ship museum and seen the biggest and most intact 15th century warship ever built at the time - it sank in Stockholm harbour 20 minutes after it was first launched and salvaged 300 years later almost completely intact. We've been bending the plastic quite a lot but I think it's worth it. Kathryn managed to somehow talk me into two rollercoaster rides at the local amusement park... not sure what came over me, but I did actually enjoy both of them. We've done sightseeing tours by boat. We've been ... read more

Hi everyone! I'm finally on holiday! I quit my job, emptied my savings account, booked a flight to Stockholm for me and my boyfriend Enrico and off we went. One can not sit by a computer at work day in and day out whilst one's life goes to waste. No no no, I made it for a full year and a half this time but that's it! So now I'm in Stockholm taking it easy in the fabulous weather (29 degrees and sun) just waiting for the adventure to start. In my bag I have a train ticket to the north of Sweden where my parents and three million mosquitos per square meter lives, tickets to a Dolly Parton concert, tickets to Hultsfred festival and tickets to Roskilde festival. (Please God, if you exist, see to ... read more

It's amazing to think that we have less than a week left of our tour! We appreciate you, our groupies, reading about our madcap shenanigans! It's difficult to express how truly awesome this trip is with just words and pictures. Our group is bonded for life through all the shared minutae of experiences...through our attempts to retain composure while eating unpalatable dishes (some of us are better at this than others), as we share personal stories of sadness and joys, discuss our indiosyncracies, fears, passions, and weaknesses...as we bravely risk 60 meter heights, water logged boats, fermented herring, and climbing through dragon mouths...and as we compare daily details of our home experiences...I think not one of us could ever truly, adequately answer the question: "How was the trip?" with words. Boy. Those were some deep thoughts...all ... read more

Hej hej loyal blog followers, Thanks to Jamie for doing such a good job with the blog. Today proved to be another exciting day. We never know what the day will hold for us when we start out, despite having a schedule. Peter, Carol, Dennis and I (Shana) are staying in Kallinge across the street from one another. Jamie and Beth are staying outside of Kallinge. This morning we set out on a boat tour of the Blekinge (the name of the county) archipelago on the Baltic sea. The team was enjoying the beautiful weather and the lovely boat ride. Unfortunately our tour was cut short by a cloud of smoke and being towed back to shore by the Swedish Sea Rescue. No worries, we are all safe and all agree that it was one of ... read more

What's a blog entry without a reference to Gilligan's Island!? Today we lived the dream, folks! The eight stranded castaways (well, we weren't really castaways...more like....floating on a boat-aways) were rescued by the Swedish version of the Coast Guard. These seafaring saviors hooked us up to their tug and towed us safely back to port. It was for sure a memorable experience! Many thanks to Skippers Hans X and Hans XI for a beautfiul venture into the Baltic and a scenic tour of the Bronze Age ruins. We also found a moment for team building in the dry, dry grass and somehow managed to build a pyramid even the Egyptians would admire! After the Ship Trip and Viking Hiking, we went on an audio guided excursion through Eriksberg, a fenced wildlife safari for your Volvo and ... read more

Uh-oh

I will say now, I wish I were Swedish! It's that simple. Okay my judgement may be misguided by the amazing weather I've had all the way up from Copenhagen. Blue sky and 25 degrees+ all the way with a little chill breeze which makes it bareable cycling (but also probably has fooled me into getting an even worse roasting by the sun). But this coastline and the water is one of the nicest stretches I've ever seen. The scenery has been gentle rolling from the start, but turning more rocky all the time (a bit like NW scotland maybe) with sandy beaches and rocky beaches interspersed all the way. And the Swedish way seems to be enjoy the sun while it's here, so some stretches have been really heaving with people (think Helsingborg - I ... read more

Howdy folks. Well we made it Stockholm and I have to say that the little towns in Scandinavia are really cool and we've enjoyed them emensely... but the cities really blow chunks in the chunkiest way when it comes to youth hostels. We got done in Copenhagen by a crappy hostel that didn't even come close to living up to expectations and now that we've arrived in Stockholm they've managed to lose our booking and so are going to throw us out onto the street two days early leaving us the task of finding new accomodation in a city that was already fully booked two months ago. Fantastic... and did we mention that expecting service in the big cities is like pulling teeth. Anyway, enough ranting, we can bash hostels till the cows come home otherwise. ... read more

A walk in the wetlands and a day in the city....a perfect example of what the Skane region has to offer, and what better way than this to fill our day?! Let me get you up to speed....a salmon dinner on the water, a nice chilly boat ride (but we're loving that the Swedes ALWAYS have blankets!), a presentation on Skane goverment and politics, an Absolut afternoon, an evening performance (to a very receptive audience), a morning walk and birding excursion in the wetlands, a lunch time performance in the city (only 2 more left!), an afternoon in the city (love the ice cream and shoe shopping), and a night for relaxation... Ok. Did I mention yet that our days are fully diverse and complete!? I could blather on about the beautiful boat ride in the ... read more
