Our flight to Barcelona was at 7:30 AM. On the boarding passes I downloaded, it looked like we were leaving from Terminal E. After 20 minutes in line, we got up to the desk to find we were in the wrong terminal. A hasty walk and we were now in the correct but even longer line and short on time. I had chatted with the woman behind us so when they started calling people for our flight, she made sure we were pulled to check our bags. Next came Passport Control with shorter, but slower moving lines. I pleaded our case with an airline employee who took us up to the front of the line. We were at the gate before they started boarding, but it was a little more exciting than is enjoyable before 7 ... read more

70 Euro. Kein Frühstück. ABER zentral. ... read more

Off to an early start again to once more beat the crowds to Casa Batllo one of Gaudi's most famous moderniste houses. It is a wonder that he was permitted to build such a place in the early 1900's with everything else being so stayed. I won't deliver a treatise on Gaudi and the moderniste movement, suffice it so say that the craftmanship was excellent, a lot of the features very inventive with the whole thing feeling almost like it cocoons you. After a couple of hours at Casa Batllo we ventured out to Parc Guell where Gaudi lived for a time creating an otherwordly park that he envisioned as forming part of a housing estate. The park is well worth a visit for the views over Barcelona alone. The crazy architecture lifts it to another ... read more

After wasting the better part of a day getting out to Gatwick on tubes and trains, then sitting around in the airport for a couple of hours instead of ambling through the English, French and Spanish countryside in high speed trains, all thanks to the French rail strike, it was great to finally touch down in sunny Barcelona. We had a hotel booked in the Gracia district of Barcelona, which is less touristy and getting there was a breeze. We bought a T10 1 zona card at the automat at the airport for a fraction under 10eur and with only one change on the subway and a 5 minute walk we were at the hotel La Casa Del Sol overlooking the Placa del Sol. The hotel was great but we were only in it 5 minutes ... read more

The rain stopped this morning (sort of) so we made our way back to Plaza Catalunya to catch the hop on hop off bus. Did the "blue route" first, which includes the Sagrada Familia - very large and very unusual, and Park Guell - created by the architect, Gaudi. Hopped off at the park (which is unfortunately a 20 minute walk uphill from the bus stop!) and walked around, admiring all things Gaudi. At least the walk back to the bus stop was downhill. The bus also went past "Camp Nou" . the home ground of FC Barcelona, a huge complex that includes the stadium that holds almost 100,000 people, and among other things, an ice skating rink! Completed the rest of the route, noticed many children walking with woven things , figured they were for ... read more

Not another beautiful day in Barcelona today - raining, raining, raining!! Forgot to mention that when we went to dinner last night, we discovered the lift in the building was not working, so this meant traipsing down & then back up 5 flights of stairs! Yep, you can imagine how happy I was about that!! So no lift, and raining - time for a quiet day. We did venture out to La Boqueria market, which is just across the road from where we are staying, and mostly undercover. Was very crowded, Lots of amazing food stalls, couldn't understand why one part was particularly crowded, till we got closer and realised they were filming Spanish Masterchef!! Managed to find something for lunch (pretty hard to choose) and then spent the rest of the afternoon watching the rain ... read more

Another beautiful day in Barcelona. Kate arrived this morning (after her overnight bus trip) ready to go on our "Montserrat, Tapas & Wine Tasting" tour. This started in Plaza Catalunya where we met our guide for the day - Xavi, and the rest of our group (including Justin from Chigago!) Then a bus ride to Monistrol (about an hour north west from Barcelona), with interesting commentary along the way (we were told that we were on the 1/2 day tour (10 to 5.30, as opposed to the full day tour 10 to 7.30??)) where we caught the cogwheel train up the mountain to Montserrat. (I chose a tour that included the train, as a friend from work had told me how good it was - she failed to mention that the train goes up the side ... read more

Made it to Barcelona after 24 hours of flying (including a 2 hour layover at the very nice, and very large Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar). Landed in Barcelona in blue sky and sunshine, which was very nice considering it was raining when we left Sydney. Slight difference in temperature though!! Checked into our apartment at 102 La Rambla, and after a short rest, walked to Plaza Catalunya, the "main square" in Barcelona, which has been taken over by tents and protesters wanting independence for Catalonia. Did our usual wander around a foreign supermarket for breakfast supplies, (I always enjoy seeing the different things on sale) - it's very stressful shopping when you can't read the labels. Our plan was to drop the shopping and then do some further exploring - didn't happen, jet lag ... read more

Barcelona - Day 5 - Sagrada Familia & Antoni Gaudi's buildings. Our walking and bus tour today is all about Gaudi. I realized as I viewed his work that I had to put it into context. Gaudi was born in 1852 and lived until 1926. His architecture designs and concepts were so advanced that he would be considered a visionary if he brought the same designs out in 2018. You would be hard pressed to find another person that has designed 7 buildings that have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. His design style is described as Modernism using most natural materials he could find. The most dominant part of his designs involved trancadis (broken glass) where he would design mosaics from broken glass and ceramics and re-purpose them. Gaudi's portion of Sagrada began in 1883 ... read more
