November 11...somehow we were able to reach Visa, and Capital One, and my daughter, who then wired us $500, and we went to a tapas bar for dinner. Capital One stonewalled us totally, but ultimately promising to overnight a new credit card, which they did. The new card was virtually useless inasmuch as it did not have a CHIP...all cards in Europe have chips...no one, BUT no one swipes, and NO ONE manually enters the numbers. The hotel patiently did try, and we were able to add one more night. Capital One said that to send us a fully functional chip card would take 10-20 days to reach Spain. Are you kidding us???? We replaced the French Simm card with our Verizon card to call US...you can just imagine how much that added up!!! So we ... read more

Another Great Escape from miserable early winter weather at home. First to Munich, Germany for a very brief look then on to Barcelona (which we had not visited in our 6 weeks in Spain 2 years ago.) Then the Transatlantic repositioning cruise to Puerto Rico, 16 days. Stops included Palma de Majorca, Malaga, Cadiz, Funchal Madeira, Santa Cruz & Arreciffe Canary Islands, 5 days to cross the Atlantic, then Tortola BVIs, St. Thomas US Virgin Islands and finally Puerto Rico. Enjoy as we relive it here. The panoramas at the beginning scroll through at a leisurely pace. 1. Barcelona waterfront and marinas. 2. Funchal Botanic Gardens, Madeira. 3. Tenerife, Canary Islands. Norwegian Epic, our ship, is to the right. 4. View off the stern. 5. The picturesque harbour of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas 6. View from ... read more

Barcelona, Barcelona and Barcelona. That’s right 3 tours in a day. Sure doesn’t pay to stuff your schedule up here and try and cram 3 days touristicity into 1! That’s a word I made up but it sounds like it should be a word. I did the hop on hop off bus on routes red and green and then did the walking tour of the old city. That’s seven hours of my life I won’t get back. No. I love tours, really. I didn’t hop off the hop on hop bus as that would have make the 2 hours (red) or 2.5 hours (green) tour even longer and I wouldn’t have had time for the 2.5 hour walk. I find the facts and figures interesting, informative and educative (who would have thought that?). The hop on ... read more

Been walking. Been driving. Now it’s training time. And that’s not training but TRAINing. Big day tomorrow as we choof chuff from the grand and grandiose St Pancras Station. I shouldn’t use choof chuff as no longer are those adjectives or onomatopoeiadic sounds associated with trains like the Eurostar. Despite the fact that St Pancras does have a platform 9 and 3/4 I do t expect any steam powered locomotives to depart from any platform. The station is a magnificent mix of old and new. It performs well as a major international departure and arrival terminal and blends the functionality expected of modern terminals with the ornate and intricate architecture of an era well gone. Despite the fact we are boarding in England and alighting in France passengers are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to ... read more

Hola amigos!! We arrived in Barcelona after a smooth flight on Georgian Airways, a nice fight with plenty of legroom on the Embraer 190 (minus in flight safety demonstration – I hazard a guess they forgot!) After a short train and metro ride we were at La Rambla, Barcelona’s pedestrian street filled with shops and cafe's. It had been 9 years since we were in Barcelona, and this time we booked a nice, central hotel just off La Rambla – well priced and well located. Our room wasn't ready so we left our bags at the hotel and wandered around La Rambla, and had lunch at a cafe at one of the central squares on the Gothic District. We feel right at home in Spain, possibly my favourite country in Europe (sorry Greece, you have a ... read more

... read more

Waking up to rural smells and sounds, and a gorgeous day, we were definitely in a village. Fuentespalda has a history we got the lowdown on upon chancing on an older resident, possibly the village crier, that afternoon. Virtually throwing herself verbally on us, the long history of the Ermita atop the hill, the legend written of the trumpet protecting the village, and the decision to never speak a certain dialect, was explained. The alternate name is Fontdespatla, and local signage is duo-lingo. La Picosa, a peak at over 1000m, took us a good few hours to climb beforehand. It was exactly the muscle-work change our thighs needed, rewarding us with a birds eye view of the nearby turquoise embalse, and dramatic craggy mountains to the east. A cool 6C morning and warm 18C afternoon fit ... read more

Barcelona 9th April Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and Spains second largest city. Everywhere you’ll see the ornately works of Antonio Gaudi, 20th century Modernism emblematic constructions declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. I make no apology for this Travel Blog turning into a food blog but you cannot come to a city that prides itself on its cuisines, with many different styles including Catalan. So starting out from the statue of Christopher Columbus at the bottom of La Rambla we headed up to the Plaza Catalunya. We were meeting friends for lunch, including 8 other fellow travellers who are travelling with us QM2. But first some sites, including the famous market of La Rambla, Mercat de la Boqueria where all the locals shop in particular for fresh produce including fresh fish, Jamon, meats and all ... read more
