Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Sunday 17 August 2008 I woke up really late today - 12:30. It's nice to be able to do that though, especially for the next few months...! No milk for cereal, so I made myself an egg sarnie. Alex went to watch the footie at the pub, so I had the flat to myself for a while. Decided to do some exercise and he came back halfway through. La Sagrada Familia
Une des nombreuses pièces sculptées qui ornent la cathédrale

Arrivée à Barcelone jeudi soir, la cousine de Manon, Virginie, nous attend sur la place catalunya. Elle nous accueillera chez elle pendant 2 jours. On a visité la Sagrada Familia, une oeuvre incroyable de l'architecte Gaudi ainsi que le parc Güell (un des lieux du tournage de l'auberge espagnole...manquait plus que Romain !!!) et pour finir la barceloneta Soirée tapas le soir de notre venue, au menu : calamars, poulpes et seiches...miam ! Odd Spot * Grid lock at Sagrada Familia - its amazing how one small sliver car can cause 8 buses to be held up for 5 minutes because the tourist driving was in the parking lane blocking through traffic. Sagrada Familia

Hola! We arrived back in Spain and found our hostel which was about half an hour out of town, but we were happy because it had free internet and a kitchen. We went to the supermarket and spent 13 euros for 3 nights worth of dinners and two lunches, the hostel had garlic, cooking oil and seasoning so we were sorted. On the first day we went to Sagrada Familia it was the most craziest church I have ever seen, designed by Barcelonas famous artist, Gaudi. Impressive fake facades are draped in front of building sites to hide the construction and renovations from public view.
