Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

trying to decide which way to go
Sunday 17 August 2008 I woke up really late today - 12:30. It's nice to be able to do that though, especially for the next few months...! No milk for cereal, so I made myself an egg sarnie. Alex went to watch the footie at the pub, so I had the flat to myself for a while. Decided to do some exercise and he came back halfway through. The Celtic Cross was shut so he'd gone to Bristol Blue, where it's expensive (although all Irish/English pubs here are), and then he got hungry so he came back. EUR 2.00 for some [View Full Entry]

OLA from Barcelona! Sorry it might have seemed like a long time since you have heard from me but I have been writing as much as I can so I don´t have you miss out on too much. Unfortunately between seeing the sites and having an amazing time partying I have had very little time to write so I will just have to start writing more of an overview of the highlights rather than such detailed description. Also excuse the grammar of this post as these Spanish keyboards are little difficult to get used to and I can´t seem to find [View Full Entry]

Activities Sagrada Familia Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar Highlight(s) * Lunch at Los Caracolos. * The coffee man remembering our usual morning order. * The Metro - Barcelona's user friendly train system. * The laneways in and around the Gothic part of the city. * Gelati count - 6. Odd Spot * Grid lock at Sagrada Familia - its amazing how one small sliver car can cause 8 buses to be held up for 5 minutes because the tourist driving was in the parking lane blocking through traffic. The horns were deafening. [View Full Entry]

Hola! We arrived back in Spain and found our hostel which was about half an hour out of town, but we were happy because it had free internet and a kitchen. We went to the supermarket and spent 13 euros for 3 nights worth of dinners and two lunches, the hostel had garlic, cooking oil and seasoning so we were sorted. On the first day we went to Sagrada Familia it was the most craziest church I have ever seen, designed by Barcelonas famous artist, Gaudi. The church symbolised life on one side and death on the other, the life side [View Full Entry]
