Last weekend we went on a trip to the Basque Country. The weather was fabulous and we got to see both the countryside and the city. I would recommend visiting Northern Spain to anyone who makes it over here; it is an entirely different part of the country. We flew into Bilbao on Friday morning and took a bus to San Sebastian. It was a lot of fun getting to see the country from the bus. It was one of the first times I've seen a farm or lots of grass and trees since I've been here! Barcelona is such a concrete jungle! Once we got to the hotel we met up with a tour guide and got a short walking tour of San Sebastian, including walking along El Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimmage route along ... read more

So after Sitges on Tuesday, I got even more sick because I was out all night. So Wednesday, I basically slept all day and had a nice day of rest. Thursday, I went to my early morning econ class, not feeling too good, so I skipped the second one to come back and take a nap. Though before I took a nap, Lauren and I went to our café to have a chocolate croissant. That day in Spanish, almost all the class was gone because the program that most of the other students are in, API, took a weekend trip to Paris. There were only three of us in class, so we just sat around and talked in Spanish- it was a good class. Afterwards, Briar and I decided to get something to eat. The night ... read more

So sorry for my bloglessness of late. We were without internet (pronounced een-ter-net here) for quite some time. On January 16 we moved into our flat. "Flat" - without vitality or animation; lifeless; dull. Having lost its flavor, sharpness, or life; stale. This hardly begins to describe what we moved in to. I will spare the details, but one salient point is that we shared the flat with 10 other people. Oh, and there was only 1 bathroom. Certainly no internet access. Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all, I found us a new place right quick. Attached is a pic from our new and improved Not-So-Flat Flat and various other photos from the past couple of weeks. ... read more

Hola! We spent the first few days strolling San Sebastian, getting our bearings and trying to reset our internal compasses (beach on the north, not the west, as accustomed). The city is small, but fabulous, and very traditionally European in architecture, style, and attitude. The people aren't rude, but not exactly the friendliest, either. Wishing someone an unsolicited "buenos dias" results in strange, confused glances. If you're not interested in conversation or idle chit chat, then this is the perfect city for you. Here are some pictures of the city and it's famous sites, including La Playa de la Concha, Monte Urgull (with the big JC monument), the opposing mountain Monte Igueldo, streets in the Parte Vieja (Old Town), etc. ... read more

I left France on another cold morning, leaving the contest at semi-finals stage as the surf dropped right off. Kelly Slater exited in round 4. He was unlucky, snapping his board and couldn't find a second good wave. Still, his surfing and ability still sands out and the spectators just love him. Mick Fanning eventually went on to win the event and I suspect he has the world title firmly in his grasp now, notwithstanding disaster. They say San Sebastian is the cultural centre of the Basque region and I know for sure that among it's 180,000 odd inhabitants, there are few that must spend much time at home around dinner time. Everybody is out, seemingly doing a tour of duty through the impressive maze of tapas bars and restaurants that line the old quarter. Just ... read more

Current local: San Sebastian. Spain. It´s a warm rainy day in San Sebastain. The Atlantic flows in and out of grey, aqua marine blue and turquoise green. The beaches are large and because of the intermintent thunder and lightening, realitively empty. It hasn´t seemed to stopped the amazingly tanned locals-mostly older men going for a mid afternoon swim. Yesterday, though, we were in Barcelona and it all that amazing art got under my skin. Now all i want to do is find a little village by the sea, preferably the Mediteranean, rent a room in a simple, cheap and clean hostel or pension and write, write, write. Between the Picasso Musuem and Gaudi´s everything, I haven´t felt so overwhelmed by artistic genius in a long time. Although, painting nor architechture or sculpture isn´t my forte, I ... read more

San Sebastian is another location known for excellent surf. Flat as a pinche pancake during our stay, but the people were so nice and the weather was beautiful! Spent many days reading at the beach and walking the old town at night. Spanish Tapas are not like the tapas you may eat in California but we loaded up and sampled a little of everything anyway! The hike up to Mount Urgull was sweaty and worth the effort. The statue of Jesus was incredibly proud and stunning. This coming from two folks who have seen quite a bit of Jesus and statues in Europe (folks aren't afraid of either in these here parts!).... read more

Boys club were heading off for another holiday, and this one was going to be the most ambitious one so far with a five day road trip across Northern Spain in the offing. Our flight was the usual crack of dawn affair and took us to Bilbao. At the airport the comedy started pre-dawn as Moss had managed to leave his Sun-tan lotion in his hand luggage. This was soon confiscated and in the process Moss had all his belongings stripped out of his bag, revealing to us all the worst pair of shoes ever inflicted on the world - immediately dubbed "sh*t , which stuck for the rest of the holiday. Even the lady behind the x-ray machine turned her nose up at Moss' fashion sense, and the tone was set for the trip! Arriving ... read more

It was the morning of my birthday- after a quick breakfast we decided to head straight to Buckingham Palace to view the tour de france (or farce!) as it was starting in London this year! i had my day planned out which included sitting down and watching the cyclists zoom past us all day! Its those days of hard work that I enjoy the most. The event was packed with people- all of London had come out to celebrate my birthay and as a side- watch the tour de france! By 4.30pm we decided to leave- and went home to rest our legs and recover for the arrival of my sister and santo expected the next day- or that is what I thought was planned! As we walked into the house I took my shoes ... read more
