Our trip to Basque CountryMinette and Craig Hola! Travelling always presents small challenges.. like figuring out how to get around, or where to find a grocery store that is open during the lunch hours (which lasts 2 to 3 hours here). We found out about a bus that picked us up from near the house in Mimizan and took us back to the train station in the middle of nowhere (lahouyere?) but it was at 6:00 in the morning. Argh! Way too early! We didn´t have much of a choice though as there were only a couple buses leaving the station (which didn´t open until 10 am) going towards the border. When we got to the station, we couldn´t buy tickets since the office was closed and the machine didn´t take our kind of credit card. ... read more

The train from Paris doesn´t cross the border into Spain because they made their tracks narrower so invading armies couldn´t enter by train, must have got that from George Bush´s play book. Anyway I had to get off in Irun and board another train for the last 10 miles; took for ever, tons of people going to San Fermins, late on thursday evening and to really complicate things lots of people didn´t speak Spanish or English. Finally got to San Sebastian and decided to stay, I´d been traveling on trains for 30 hours, asked a taxi to take me to a hotel, not expensive but nice, and he did. I stayed in Hotel Plaza Zaragozza for two nights one block off the ocean and when you see the pictures you can see why. Love San Sebastian!! ... read more

Today was all hiking around the hills above San Sebastian and playing on the beach below. Couldn´t really ask for a better combination. We slept sort of late because it was raining and it felt like the thing to do. Since we went to sleep around ten, it was amazing that we could crash for that long. Our friendly little hostel owners gave us a hard time for making it an early night. ¨You are too young to sleep early!¨ the son and his mom sang together. They are forever talking to us; greeting us as we come in, telling us stories in the hallway, and asking us how our day has been so far. We packed a croissant, cheese, and apple lunch and headed off to an area by the coast that looked worth ... read more

James, Leah and I had been waiting for ages to escape the Spanish heat by having a swim on the north coast at San Sebastian, but as luck would have it, it was the one overcast day! We only had a few hours here, so started off with some sightseeing. We randomly wandered into ‘Plaza de la Constitucion’ where a local brass band was playing and people were dancing. It’s so neat to come across things like that which fill the place with such atmosphere! We had a look at the waterfront and climbed the big hill, Monte Urgull, which presented views right across San Sebastian. We got to the monument at the top before making our way back down the cobblestone path to the Basilica de Santa Maria at the base of the hill, a ... read more

After our quick stop-off in Burgos we were back on the road. We drove north towards Santander then east to Bilbao and along the northern coastline. It was a bit rainy and miserable but the scenery was still impressive. The roads in the north have numerous large tunnels weaving through the mountainous terrain. After winding our way through some treacherous hilltop roads and tiny villages we stopped at a little beach near the town of Lekeitio. Technically camping/ stopping wasn’t allowed but we figured it was unlikely that anyone would be patrolling this remote beach overnight so we pulled up the van and settled in. We decided to crack the cheap 5L bottle (plastic) of wine and play some cards which, of course, was a recipe for disaster and we all woke up feeling decidedly worse ... read more

Our last night in Valencia was great. We were moved to a different room, on the top floor which opened into the lounge area, and had a giant window facing the terrace. This put us right on the hub of hostel activities, and so that evening we ended up meeting kids from all over. We started a game of egyptian rat screw and you´d think she was either waving money around or handing out free beer the way everyone flocked to the table to play. It was nuts. The game requires lots of swift hand slapping and Molly warned them not to hit the cards too early...dubbing this ´premature slapation´, and pretty soon we had every accent imaginable screaming ´´hey that was premature slapation!´´ Today was our first day in San Sebastian and we are ... read more

Sooo it's the day after my 21st Birthday and let me tell you my head hurts! But it was totally worth it, I'm 21 now! 21 is not a big deal here, because you can drink straight out of the cradle, but all the people at the bars know it is a big deal for an American, so i got free drinks anyways! I will make a list of everything I drank, because it was amazing! at the apartment: Champagne, the cheap stuff that cost 3 euros, but hey I'm not picky yet Sex on the Beach, basically a fruity delicious mix with juice Sangria While playing Kings (a drinking game) we mixed the sex on the beach with the sangria and to our surprise it was quite deilicious Corona with lime, or as they call ... read more

Today started off raining, but it ended up being the ideal day! I went for coffee in the morning with an Australian girl who had eclectic muscial tastes and was a big fan of Tommy Emmanuel. I spent the entire afternoon at the beach and hanging out with the people I had met the previous night. I went for a nice swim in the Atlantic, and got a nice tan. TGV to Paris overnight to meet Bob!!!... read more
