Hello again, I do appoligize for my lack in blogging, things have been full on over the last month and it's finally catch up time so bare with me please! Now where were we...Ahhh arriving in Slovenia yes I remember now! We arrived in Ljubljana on a sunday despite my guide book warning that Slovenia dies on sundays...I think to myself, ah my book is a bit dated and has been known to be wrong surely it's not that bad! Well Slovenia was dead! Luckily for us we got the last two beds in the hostel after getting refused from another, the catch, no pillows, no blanket, no cupboard just a sponge on a board! That'll do!! Exploring the capital city on a sunday was creepy...ghost town in a capital city is odd. The following day ... read more

The train trip to Ljubljana was quite short and we had a compartment to ourselves, which made it quite a pleasent trip. When we were interupted by the border control people, we got the Slovenian stamp which showed that we were now back in the EU. Again we had not booked any accommodation in Ljubljana before we arrived as everything on the internet looked either too expensive or too far away from the city centre so we decided to again try our luck with tourist information at the station. But before we did that we were expecting to have to change money into the local currency which was something called SIT and we had to work out what the appropriate conversion rate was so we knew how much to withdraw from an ATM. It's a quick drive through Slovenia, we also happen to drive through Bosnia for all of 2 minutes, he he, but we do stop in Slovenia and stop at one of the largest cave systems in Europe - the Postojna Caves. 27kms of undeground galleries and chambers which we travel through and to by electric train, it was absolutley freezing. It also poured down with rain outside as we were coming in and we got saturated!!... read more

So I went up to Vigntmar George today, it rained slightly all day but the george was so beautiful. Im sure parts of Narnia were filmed here. I would have tried the rafting if i'd had a spare set of clothes. Again, lots of English people, I think I might loose them when I get to Sarajevo. The castle by the lake, at sunset, with Slovenian wine, is my new Castle Hill. I'll tell Dan to let any potential guy know in advance... Theres a thunderstorm at the moment thats knocked out most of the internet in town...in a weird way...HOW cool is that?! And they sell wine here for 0.9euro, thats like, 60p!! Theres caves here in Ljubljana that i want to explore too, so maybe another night here? We'll see how it panns out. ... read more

So yeah, the lake is pretty cool. I say that, and i mean its uber-amazing! A bit touristy, but Im going to walk early tomorrow morning when it'll be quiet. Stuff castle hill in Buda, its going to be somewhere, maybe here,in Slovenia. I think granny and grandpa came here some years ago, was probably a bit different then. The water is so clear and turquoise, I just rememeber grandpa saying the lillies photos was from Yugoslavia, so it was probably here. ... read more

Ljubljana is wonderful. I went up to the castle early as it'd be quieter and met this Kiwi girl and we wandered round for the morning. There was an art piece that made it rain in the street! Random! Went in a lovely church just before they closed for mass, and had really cheap wine by the river. A good morning, all in all. Im taking the bus to lake Bled even though its grey and overcast, as i kinda want to see it in the morning. I think I sent grandpa a postcard, I may have just put it in the bin, im not sure. The architecture is not quite what i expected, tho im not really sure quite what i expected! It looks like "new trying to be old" with a smattering of actual ... read more

Hi Everybody! Slovenia is a charming country and reminds me of Germany. Everything is lush and green with pretty flowers everywhere. The houses all have window boxes that are overflowing with bright colored flowers. Tito, the Communist leader of Yugoslavia, had a summer villa here and often entertained heads of state in Bled. Bled is a small alpine town that sits by peaceful Lake Bled. It has a 1000 year old castle hanging from the side of a cliff. The Julian Alps - named after Julius Casesar are a backdrop for the town. In the middle of Lake Bled is a fairytale island with a small church. During the Communist reign, the church was closed and wedding were outlawed in the church. Today, it is a popular site for weddings. The Slovenians have a tradition that ... read more

... read more

Ljubljana er ... read more

August 6, 2007 Friends in Europe We left Makarska early to avoid the crowds…after all it is August, we kept hearing! We were rolling along, singing the praises of the Croatian roads. Until…OMG…it stopped dead on the freeway…for 3 hours! We thought for sure there was an accident. We were in the middle of no-where, people were getting out of their cars to pee behind bushes on the side of the road, women even, that is how desperate people were. After more than three hours of creeping along, we got going after the road took 3 lanes to 1! This whole nightmare was due to a merge. We stopped singing the praises of the great Croatian roads! We finally got under way to Slovenia. The 5 hour drive was now on its 10 hour when we ... read more
