Hallo allemaal!

Hello, So, we're in Slovenia right now. Ooooooooooooo, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! This is really the first part of the uncharted territory of this trip. We left Munich at the crack of dawn and hopped on the train to Slovenia. The seats were all reserved so we made good use of the available space in the luggage compartment. We hadn't left Bavaria before a random guy approached us and asked to see our passports. Now, we've heard about people stealing passports or looking for bribes, so both of us were a little worried by now. We asked why, and then he showed us his ideantification (id card and handgun) and said he was with the bavarian police and he was looking for drugs. We reluctantly handed over our passports and waited. He was then joined by his three buddies. ... read more

Is there anything better to do on your two weeks off than go for a trip? No there is not. Having no exams, no obligations at work just make me go for a trip somewhere. A year before I met Jasmina from Ljubljana at a voluntary project in Turkey with a lot of other great people, but somehow we stayed in contact the most, probably because of the rich common history and novadays happenings at this region, language and other things. In Sptember, the year before, she came to Belgrade to visit the three of us from Serbia who participated in the former project. Now I thought it would be good to revisit her and Slovenia. The train was taking me directly to Ljubljana, through Zagreb and took me around 8 hours. As soon as I ... read more

So.. in case youre frightened right now - here they spell the name of the country Slovenija... a particular souvenir was written with the S somewhat obscured, leading Simon to belive it actually said "Love Ninja". Im not sure it acurately describes the country, but I like it! To get on with the story, this country is BEAUTIFUL!! Very very story book, fairytale castles, mountains, rivers, gorgeous little villages, and crazy motorways! The centre of Ljubljana is gorgeous - a river lined with beautiful old buildings, bars, cafes, restaurants and ice-cream stands, so as you can imagine, it has been very tough. Weve had a few days here, so it has been nice to take a breath after racing around. Yesterday we (well, Simon) hired a car and we headed out to see some phenomenal ... read more

Slovenia 6th-10th May, 2008 Bled Bled is really a very lovely town set at the base of the Julian Alps on Lake Bled. It was a very chilled out town to be when we weren't off on our adventures. A very long day of travelling to get to Bled via Trieste and Gorizia in Italy. There were spectualar views of the Alps during my flight to Trieste. And the views were equally as stunning on the train journey from Gorizia to Bled along the Soca River which was a very vivid blue. Met up with Harry at the Bledec Youth Hostel and she filled me in on all the adventures she had planned for us. Emerald River Adventure - so called because of the emerald colour of the waters we saw and rafted on. The morning ... read more

Wow, today was a lot of fun. I headed back towards Trieste, Italy (but stayed in Slovenia) to an underground cave system called Skocjan. It was huge. In America only Mammoth Caves and Carlsbad Caverns are larger. The tour was about an hour and a half through 2 separate caves areas. One was the silent cave and the other was the murmuring cave because it has a river flowing through it. I'm telling you, the caves were absolutely huge. I bought the book on them they were so impressive. I took a couple pictures although we weren't really supposed to and other people were as well. I also drove about 40 km per hour over the speed limit, so I didn't feel so badly. The caves were filled with Stalagmites and stalactites and columns, where the ... read more

Today I went to Lake Bled, a beautiful lake up by the Julian Alps. It was a bit of a challenge finding the right freeway, but with the help of a nice lady out to walk her dog, I was pointed in the right direction. The guidebook said to follow the signs for Bled, which would have been easy if there were any. Here, the signs pointed to another town. It would be like looking for a sign to Vancouver, BC while in Portland; you would have to follow the signs to Olympia and Seattle and then there would be signs for Vancouver. All was well though. It was misty, cold, grey, rainy, but beautiful at the Lake. I walked around, climbed up a big hill to tour a castle. Up there, they have a printing ... read more

I am once again at a hotel with internet access through the hotel computer, so no pictures again. If I find an internet bar, I will see what I can do. Driving up here from Firenze was actually very easy. I only made one wrong turn, exiting the autostrade, but I was able to fix it quickly and easily. Trying to figure out where I need to go while driving with the flow of traffic was exciting in itself. I stopped in Trieste for coffee. To celebrate, I had 2 cappuccinos. 1 to drink and the other to wear on my shirt. Grrr. So I bought a nice cafe au lait colored long sleeve polo in Trieste. Guess it was meant to be. On my way out of Trieste, I passed the Illy plant, or at ... read more
