Sunday 10th June - Moved away from the flat lands of the East towards the city of Maribor. The hills were welcome and the scenery much nicer - back to the small holdings and attractive villages. Had a trip through Austria and back into Slovenia via a very pretty, and highly manicured, walled town called Radkersberg. Must have some claim to fame with regard to the penny farthing as there is a sculpture of one and an inscription on a house regarding some penny farthing related event that took place there. By some miracle of navigation managed to get out of Maribor on the right road, and called in a the botanical gardens for a bottle of excellent apple juice and a kilo of cherries. Camp site at Radizel failed to materialize, but an excellent guest ... read more

Set off South from Kobarid, not intending to visit Nova Gorrica, but took a wrong turn and ended up there anyway. Confirmed original decision, as it is a bit of an armpit. Took another wrong turn and ended up in Italy. Tried to sneak back into Slovenia via back road but border guard politely said "crvčlk zu čbij lkja yasaka čhy contrpsksa" (where do you think you re going, not through my border you ain t" So went back through original post and fought our way out of the congestion of NG. Next got hit by torrential downpour and couldn t find any accomodation until got to Stanjel, which having a castle is not only at the top of an enormous hill but has accomodation. Lady pointed out a house with bed for the night ... read more

Well next it was onto a place where I had no idea how to pronounce the name of the place until I got on the train to go there. It's Ljubljana (Pronounced Joo-bil-lana). Strangely enough I didn't get a whole lot of sleep on the night train and pulled in there fairly dazed, but found my hostel really quickly, dumped my backpack and went out exploring. I had left the Swiss Weather Curse behind and it was perfectly blue skies so I wandered around a couple of parks and made my way to Ljubljana Castle, which although it doesn't have the history of the Western European or Middle Eastern castles, it was still pretty cool. For the rest of the afternoon, I checked out a couple of slightly touristy things, then headed for the backstreets ... read more

On from Vienna, we found ourselves in the alpine regions of Slovenia, though not before a lovely stop in its capital city, Ljubljana. Ljubljana is quite a small city, it thinks its more of a town really. It is very scenic, and a great place for just wandering around. Not much in the way of sights, so we just soaked up the atmosphere. There is a small castle overlooking the old centre, which we decided to walk up to, instead of taking the funicular. It seemed like a good idea to get our legs ready for all the mountains we plan to climb. The next day headed off to the lakeside village of Bled, where we planned to spend a few days. Bled proved to be as pretty and idyllic as we had heard. Over ... read more

After wandering around Piran in the morning we headed for Ljubljana in the afternoon a trip of around 150 kms. The drive itself was uneventual until a deer ( Bambi) poked its head out of the forest and began to move towards the edge of the autobahn. This happened to be right at the time I was searchnig for a pretzel that I had dropped while driving and thus I didn't see Bambi until it was way too late to take any form of evasive action. Fortunately for Bambi, and us, it had the sense to recognise that its life expectancy would be best extended by turning right around and heading back to where it had come from. We arrived in Ljubljana late in the afternoon and after checking into our hotel headed out to ... read more

We left Pula feeling a little down so we were very exicited when we found ourselves in the beautiful towns of Potoroz and Piran, both are on the Slovenian coastline which is only 43kms long. These towns are very different. Potoroz is the Slovenian version of the French Riveria, a series of hotels along an esplanade. We decided we would stay in Potoroz and then drive the short distance to Piran for dinner. We spent the morning looking around and the afternoon laying by the pool area of our hotel, which was very nice. We travelled into Piran for dinner, but not before dowing a few cocktails at the local Irish Pub overlooking the Adriatic Sea. It really doesn't get much better!! Tim's team also travelled to Piran for dinner so it was nice to ... read more

Spent the day cycling up the Soca valley, beside the river Soca, which is a turquoise green glacial river. The valley is very beautiful - through wooded mountains. Lots of canoeing, hiking and biking around here. Stopped in a cafe to try the local speciality of the valley, which turned out to look like a steamed cornish pasty filled with apple, nuts and cinnamon and covered in syrup - ideal cycling fare. Valley has a turbulent past - lots of WW1 graves and battle sites.. Weather improved dramatically. Richard peddaling along with solar panels drapped over panniers. Only takes a week to charge four batteries! Mileage(?) so far 436 Km. Planning to move south tomorrow, with a fleeting visit to Italy.... read more

Arrived safely in Klagenfurt, bikes intact thanks to careful handling by Ryan Air. Couple of nice days around the lakes of Austria and then the first mountain pass into Slovenia. 18% gradient appears to be the only road sign the authorities have! Diane walked to Slovenia and was serviously annoyed that Richard had turned down a tractor ride to the top of the pass and international border point. Three days of rain followed, including two nights of torrential rain. Tent held up well. Lake Bled & Bohinje beautiful, but better in the sun. All farming very rural and traditional. Just been to excellent WW1 museum in Kobarid. Not usually our sort of thing, but very moving. Staying here for a day or two at nice campsite with good food and beer and taking a day ... read more

Yesterday I took a little drive with Reini to the border of Croatia. We had planned to drive at least 3 hours, and weren't very excited about that. The weather was really hot and humid, and Reini's air conditioner decided to poop out on us a week ago. Oh well, we said, for we needed to take the trip in order for me to be allowed to stay in Europe for another 3 months. The stamp in my passport from Croatia would be proof that I would be there for touristic reasons. I don't know if you'd call me a tourist of Austria, but if that's the way things must work here, well, then I guess I am, legally speaking. We packed a bag full of sandwiches and brought a bottle of sparkling water with ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Slovenian Littoral » Bovec May 26th 2007

After 4 really enjoyable days in Budapest it was time to move to our next to Lbuljana, stay overnight there, pick up a car the next morning and drive into to the Slovenian countryside to Bovec. Well fair to say things didnt start off too well. As it turned out we incorrectly assumed that the train would leave from the main station, Keleti the same one we arrived at 4 days earlier from Bratislava. This was not the case. Upon presenting our tickets we were told that the train to Slovenia left from another station across the other side of town. After a mild panic attack ( Glenn is so good in a crisis) we hailed a cab and made a mad dash across town with a cab dirver who insisted on pointnig out all ... read more
