Neuschwanstein Castle

Published: June 9th 2007Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Fussen

This one is for my friend Karen Pearce (hope you are still reading our blog!) Lover of all castles. Up early again and much to the delight of Tim to make our journey to Munich and then back to Fussen, 4 hours in total on the train. To say that Glenn was not all that enthusiastic about making this trip might be a bit of an understatement. He thought we were going to some hick town to see a a little castle to keep me happy (last part true lol.) Upon arrival he was very quick to eat his words, before our eyes was this beautiful castle, Neuschwanstein. Home of King Ludwig of Bavaria. After getting off the train we made our way to our hotel, The Mueller. We were very impressed as once again ... read more

Flying high over Innsbruck

Published: June 8th 2007Europe » Austria » Tyrol » Innsbruck

After leaving Hallstatt we were on way to Innsbruck. Th train trip was real postcard stuff, mountains, lakes, rivers all the way. We had to change trains at a place named Stainach. While we were scoffing down breakfast on the platform an old local came up to us for a bit off a chat. This is one of the things Glenn really likes, finding out the inside info from the locals. Turned out this guy was 85 years old and on his way out for a bit of mountain climbing. He told us he had climbed all of the mountains in the local area, the last one around 2000 metres when he was 83. Quite an amazing bloke. We arrived in Innsbruck early in the afternoon and after checking into our hotel headed straight out ... read more

We were up early for our 4 hour train trip to Hallstatt. After an enormous breakfast (Tim) we hailed a taxi and headed to the station. A small error (Vicki) saw us miss the first train and had an hour delay for the next one. lol We travelled through some amazing country side mainly through the lakes district. There are many lakes in this area will small towns on their shores. Arriving at Hallstatt we had to take a short ferry ride to the town. What a sight it was from the ferry!!!! Everyone on the boat fell silent as they madly clicked away on their cameras. Thank god for digital you can just go crazy, and we did. Hallstatt is right on the edge of the lake with its houses built steeply up the ... read more

Salzburg

Published: June 4th 2007Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg

We left Ljubljana early Monday morning headed for Salzburg. The train trip there took abount 4 hours and as you would expect provided spectacular views of the Austrian countryside. After checking into our 600 year old hotel we headed out to make the most of our short stay here. We wandered through the old town before taking the funicular up the mountain to the castle that overlooks the city. We really had a sense of DeJaVu having done the same thing with Matthew, Sharee and Ross two years ago. we even sat at the same table at a cafe in the castle and enjoyed a 0.5 lite of the local beer Stiegl, one the best we have sampled so far. One our way back we set out to find the same restaurant that we had ... read more

After wandering around Piran in the morning we headed for Ljubljana in the afternoon a trip of around 150 kms. The drive itself was uneventual until a deer ( Bambi) poked its head out of the forest and began to move towards the edge of the autobahn. This happened to be right at the time I was searchnig for a pretzel that I had dropped while driving and thus I didn't see Bambi until it was way too late to take any form of evasive action. Fortunately for Bambi, and us, it had the sense to recognise that its life expectancy would be best extended by turning right around and heading back to where it had come from. We arrived in Ljubljana late in the afternoon and after checking into our hotel headed out to ... read more

Piran & Potoroz

Published: June 1st 2007Europe » Slovenia » Istria » Piran

We left Pula feeling a little down so we were very exicited when we found ourselves in the beautiful towns of Potoroz and Piran, both are on the Slovenian coastline which is only 43kms long. These towns are very different. Potoroz is the Slovenian version of the French Riveria, a series of hotels along an esplanade. We decided we would stay in Potoroz and then drive the short distance to Piran for dinner. We spent the morning looking around and the afternoon laying by the pool area of our hotel, which was very nice. We travelled into Piran for dinner, but not before dowing a few cocktails at the local Irish Pub overlooking the Adriatic Sea. It really doesn't get much better!! Tim's team also travelled to Piran for dinner so it was nice to ... read more

Pula ( Croation for Shithole )

Published: May 31st 2007Europe » Croatia » Istria » Pula

I suppose its not all that surprising that when you are away for a month not all your experiences will be highlights, and there is no doubt that our short stay in Pula was the lowlight of our trip so far. The day had started well enough, we had decided to leave Rab Island early, mainly because the weather had taken a turn for the worse and if we couldn“t spend the day swimming there was not a lot else to do there. The drive back to Pula took us along the coast providing spectacular views of the towns below and the islands that seem to surround the coastline of Croatia. The decision to go to Pula was largely on the back of Matt's tip that there was some great Roman ruins there similar to ... read more

Rab Island

Published: May 30th 2007Europe » Croatia

We travelled down from Bovec to pick up Matt! Great to see him and give him a big hug, he looks really well. We then set the GPS for Rab Island Croatia. It seem to have a bit of a snag, it would not guide us onto the right road for some reason. Anyway after a few tense moments from Glenn we managed to head in the right direction, if not the most direct route. The only way to get onto Rab is by ferry from Jablanic, we found this easily enough and were soon on board. Although we only just had enough money for the fare and they did not take visa and there was no "Bankomat" for some distance. Rab is a large island with many small towns on it. We stayed at ... read more

Budapest to Bovec

Published: May 26th 2007Europe » Slovenia » Slovenian Littoral » Bovec

After 4 really enjoyable days in Budapest it was time to move to our next to Lbuljana, stay overnight there, pick up a car the next morning and drive into to the Slovenian countryside to Bovec. Well fair to say things didnt start off too well. As it turned out we incorrectly assumed that the train would leave from the main station, Keleti the same one we arrived at 4 days earlier from Bratislava. This was not the case. Upon presenting our tickets we were told that the train to Slovenia left from another station across the other side of town. After a mild panic attack ( Glenn is so good in a crisis) we hailed a cab and made a mad dash across town with a cab dirver who insisted on pointnig out all ... read more

We Love Budapest!

Published: May 23rd 2007Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest

Arrives in Budapest on Sunday evening after a two hour train trip from Bratislava on the Euro City. 1st Class Eurorail is a very pleasant way to travel. Staying at a very nice hotel in a great location on the Pest side of the city. Budapest is a huge city on both sides of the Danube. Spent our first day Monday getting familiar with the city. We took a 3 hour bus tour which either went past or stopped at many main locations, including House of Parliament, Castle District on Buda side and the monument of Heroes. All Magnificent!!!!!!! In the afternoon we walked to St Stphens Basilica, an amazing church not to far from our hotel. We took the lift to the tower which provided gret views over the city. On the way back we ... read more
