Was it all a dream? Did we really have six worry free days where all we had to worry about was buying snacks at the train station? Our mid-trip crisis (we've heard from others that this often happens at the three-month mark) began in Beijing and has unfortunately continued in Russia. We were feeling so rested when we got off the train. We found a nice hostel in Moscow and had dinner with our new friends. In the morning we were supposed to get in touch with a Moscow business contact of Justin's father. We should have known that things weren't quite going to go our way when our breakfast included with our room turned out to be a big bowl of plain pasta - not even butter. We set out for Red Square, but before ... read more

Yartek is a thirty minute walk from Yaroslavl Glavnyi station - it took us almost exactly fourteen hours to get from my new school to my old one. While we walked I showed Liisa, Claire, Tamzin and Orphais the places that mean something to me; the poliklinika where I took my shirt off for the three women to examine me when I was ill, the Tolbukhina block of flats where I used to live, the Shinnik football stadium, the shop where I bought my winter coat, and Pizzeria Tashir. If the lady with the lazy eye (who always used to make me hot drinks when I was cold) was on night duty at Yartek I knew she would help us to find a hotel. If she wasn't we would have to start looking for somewhere to ... read more

WOW! as we flew out of Hungary, you could see the beautiful snow blanketing the mountains! absoloutly breathtaking! as we flew into Milano, Italia it was raining. Customs was hilarious! i stood in a line much quicker than dad's, so i got thru very quickly. as i stood waiting for him, the airline bag checkers came over and started flirting with me and making sexy faces trying to get me to take their picture. i couldnt help but laugh histarically at this steriotypical italian group of men while my dad passed through. my dad was deffinately not terribly thrilled with Italy and the services, since they were so busy being social they didnt have tome to clean anything. i loved it and want to stay there longer some time. Saint Petersbourg is absoloutly amazing! it is ... read more

Myself, Claire, Liisa and Tamzin set off from the obshezhitie at 10.30 this morning. When we got to the train station there was no elektrichka to Moscow until 2 o'clock, so we had lunch in a café until it was time to leave. The elektrichka was the same one that I took two weeks ago; a sort of long prison van with uncomfortable metal chairs, dirty windows and an untraceable damp smell. While they are travelling some Russians take the opportunity to sell things to other passengers. Every twenty minutes or so a person would come through the doors of our carriage - an open suitcase in their hand and a money belt around their waist - and make a loud sales pitch for their mobile phone holders, chocolate bars, portable torches or newspapers. They would ... read more

Einfach mal so. Was ich mir davon verspreche? Nun, den tiefsten See der Erde zu sehen. ... read more

In the literature lesson today we talked about Gogol's 'Shinel', and after the break read through a piece of paper about essay-writing technique. I will always be a lazy student, and spending evenings doing essays is one thing I cannot stand. After classes I asked Lyudmila Giorgevna if four of us could be excused from lessons tomorrow. Maybe another weekend road trip will shake some of the lethargy away - we have found a town, but have no idea where we will be staying while we are there. Some of Yulia's friends came to visit this evening. Vitalii knew everything about English football - including the songs of all the big teams which he loved singing to me - and Maksim was his quieter, sadder sidekick. We sat in Yulia's kitchen drinking coffee, until Ella called ... read more

There is no word in the Russian language for 'privacy'. It's surprising considering the closed nature of people while they are outside, but the idea of tact doesn't really exist in a personal context. I was having a casual breakfast this morning - breaking off the last square of Babaevskii chocolate and singing along to the latest Russian pop song that is in my head all the time - when a small old woman with teeth missing appeared in my appartment. I suppose she is one of the obshezhitie administrators. She was in the kitchen almost before I heard the knock on the door, and started to yell at me in a way very few people ever have. The reason? I had left my clothes to dry on the window sill at the end of my ... read more

Another quiet, and perhaps slow, day. Tuuli and Jonathan became Oksana and Aleksei for the first lesson. We sat at the front of the classroom in our roles as pretend television researchers and asked the class our questions. In fact I have been thinking about looking for a job somewhere in the Moscow media when I return to Russia. At lunchtime the unknown woman was still listening in, as I talked to Natalia from the obshezhitie reception phone. She said "allo?" a few times again - didn't answer me as I said "allo" back - then there were some loud clicks as she tried to make a phone call of her own. So much for spring arriving and buying a lighter coat. The temperature has fallen to minus 9 and the wind blowing down ulitsa Trekhsvyatskaya ... read more

Hi there... On 8th of March was Women“s day in Russia... Official Holiday!! So on 7th several men of our company passed through the offices and gave roses and a congratulation-card to each woman!! Nice!! In the evening we had a tiny party at the trainees flat... we had a day off the next day, so we had to celebrate... Most important rules if you attend a Party in Russia... 1. If you hear about the party, tell the others! If it would be a private party people would tell you in advance!... Generally, the more people, the better!!! 2. Everybody buys some beer and brings it to the party (yes, eventhough there are other stereotypes, Russians drink far more beer than Vodka) this way everybody contributes to the party... and it is always welcomed to ... read more
