Yesterday's bad mood had gone when I woke up today. I was still tired, so I got up late and stayed in the obshezhitie for most of the afternoon. I watched the Swedish ice hockey team beat the Czech Republic with Karin and Linda, eating smoked cheese and cookies.... read more

I walked into the kitchen this morning to find a huge icicle hanging outside the window. It looks like a giant glass octopus, that has wrapped itself around the top of the building and is trying to climb inside, away from the cold. Today is a public holiday - day of the protectors of the fatherland - so classes have stopped until sunday. I hadn't yet had a chance to see much of Tver so I took my camera for a walk this afternoon. The sky was light grey, the same colour as the snow that has been pushed to the side of every street, often in heaps four feet high. Tver is charmingly run-down. The paint is peeling from the walls of the buildings, cars are old and rusty. The streets are busy with couples ... read more

Hi There again... How to tell in brief all the things I have experienced, seen and learned already in the first days... Generally speaking, Russians are quiete nice people, as long as you can either speak Russian, were introduced to the person ... foreigners in the street are not that friendly... they are muttering and unfriendly... to say sorry for stepping on somebody's foot... why??? During Rushour Metro is so packed with people, that everybody bumps into everybody... sometimes I feel like a cow in a herd, drove to somewhere. Metro doors open hundrets of people surge out of it, either to the exit, or through up and down leading floors to the next platform to be pressen back into another Metro and stand on other people's feet until they reach their final destination... cosy ;o) ... read more

Finland reigns supreme in the hostel. The girls talk Finnish amongst themselves but Yulia, Yenu, Kseniya, and Natasha also have Russian as a second mother tongue. I speak in Russian with everyone apart from Michael and Tamzin. Christa, Tuuli, Linda and Haidie are also from Finland, Claire is from France, Kolya is French Canadian and Karin is from Finland and speaks Swedish too. The hierarchy is much like the winter olympics that everyone spends their evenings watching in the lounge: Finnish and Russian are going for gold, English is acknowledged but firmly at the bottom of the pecking order! Zhanna's class this morning was a waste of time. The native speakers are taking a specialist translation course, the rest have all been pushed together. Those of us that have lived in Russia before should be taught ... read more

This lesson this morning was 'Russia Today'. I don't know the name of the teacher yet, a thin lady in her fifties with greying blonde hair. We watched the morning news - with reports about Iran, bird 'flu and another Russian figure skating medal at the winter olympics - then read through some articles. Lessons are far more formal here in comparison with Yartek. The teachers had organised a 'meet and greet' afternoon for the international students - the idea was that we should be introduced to a few of the students from the university. It took place in a large hall across the courtyard. I was told to sit at one of the six tables, with Henrietta from Germany and four girls from Tver. The event was ghastly. The speech that the thin lady gave ... read more

The water in the flat was cleaner this morning and by 10 I had taken a shower and had half a cup of coffee. Just needing to go downstairs to get to class I was only five minutes late for my first lesson. It was Russian Literature with Zhanna, who is about 30 with long dark red hair. Our classroom is quite small, with a circular wooden table in the middle for seven students and a teachers' desk at the front. The wallpaper is light pink, the view from the window overlooks ulitsa Zhelyabova. For the first half of the 90 minute 'para' the class introduced ourselves, so I finally got to know the names of the girls from Finland. The very attractive blonde haired girl is Tuuli, her friend Haidie sits next to her, Emi ... read more

My alarm was set for 8 to allow for a lie-in before the day started. I kept pressing the snooze button every ten minutes for two hours, so exhausted after yesterday that even my thin mattress on top of wooden boards felt cosy. When I eventually lifted myself up and went to the bathroom for a shower I arrived at the first problem of my stay. Our tap water is stagnant; by the time the scum from the tank had run through all I was doing was washing the foul smelling water off my skin with slightly cleaner stuff. I will have to keep my eyes and mouth tightly closed from now on. Cooking, making coffee, even brushing my teeth will need to be done using bottled water. Myself Tamzin and Michael went for a walk ... read more

Gruss martin ... read more

My flight to Moscow was at 9.15 in the morning. Once I said goodbye to my parents I walked to the departure lounge, but took too long talking to some of my Yartek friends on the way and by the time I got there at 8.55 I was seriously panicking about missing the 'plane. I just made it but from there the panic increased. I'm usually quite relaxed when I fly but this time I was in pieces. I had never sat on my own before, the 'plane was less than half full and I knew no-one. During the whole three and a half hours I had the feeling in my chest as if we were taking off. At Domodedovo I went through passport control and baggage reclaim on my own, still almost shaking, then wheeled ... read more
