Well, moscow is deffinately very different than Saint Petersburg. We had a great time exploring the Kremlin. in one of the museums, i met a businessman from Vladivostock (near Japan) who was describing the differences between moscow and vladivostock. it was interesting to listen to a russian's opinion of the differences in cultural areas (very similar to the differences in different parts of the US). we went to a cathedral where i also met a young russian named Vladmir, who gave me his number and a cassette of russian church music to remember him by. i have yet to meet an american man who was so sweet andfawning- keep that in mind, boys!! ;) we also took a tour around sergeiv passat. this is an active orthodox monestary where we got a private tour of the ... read more

I found out this morning that I have an extra month in which to write my project. My evenings will now be less busy than I feared they would be, so I bought a chess set from the market. It has scratches on all the white squares and only one black knight, but apart from that it is in perfect condition. Taking one white knight off the table before playing won't interfere too much; the lady who owns the stall I bought it from was very friendly, and she can buy eight loaves of bread with the 70 roubles I gave her. Michael is in Moscow visiting friends so I am all alone in the flat. Linda and Karin came over to have a cup of coffee and a chat - and to eat every biscuit ... read more

We discovered that a night out in Riga is not a good idea, if you are facing a 14hour journey to St.Petersburg the following day. Especially not when you have to face dour Russian guards and the Russian border control at midnight that same evening who have no English, and throw random forms at you to fill in, which are completely in Russian. Thankfully, a very helpful Russian man who had been on the bus with us managed to translate for us, and we somehow managed to make it through without being arrested or deported back to Ireland. He even went out of his way to bring us to the correct metro station for our hostel (which wasn't on his way) and came out of the station to point us in the right direction. Blessed, we ... read more

We arrive in Exaterinburg during the evening and are met by no less than three people who take us and Matt to our hotel, the Bolshoy, which is massive and feels more like a block of flats. The seemingly oppulent lobby gives way to basic but functional rooms. We venture our to find a bar. Gordon's (the Irish bar next to the hotel) has very high prices by Russian standards, wo we reject this and go in search of a local bar. We locate one and chat over a couple of vodkas (the measures are much bigger here). The next morning we are met by our guide Marianna and our driver Igor. Exaterinburg is a city born of the Soviet times, it primarily existed to build tanks and other weaponry for the massive army. As a ... read more

The second university 'event' started in the building opposite the obshezhitie at 2.15. I sat at a table with four students from the history department, another boy called Roma and three girls. They were much easier to talk to than the students from the last party and we got on really well. The scripts that the presenters read out made quite a few people laugh. They turned Zhanna's patronising text into a parody, especially the part when Michael pretended to be ill from fear of being in Russia. The way Yenu fussed over him while he resisted her help defensively was just like a scene from 'Sasha and Masha', a sunday evening comedy on channel one. Each group of students spoke about their own country and taught the rest of the room their national song. When ... read more

well, we arrived in moscow. the train was very interesting. it seemed so short cuz i slept the whole time. the dinner they provided included a small jar of caviar! this seems to be a very important part of their diet. our tour arround the city was exhausting, since i didnt have a chance to rest after the ride and we went on foot everywhere. we went to a small museum of a medieval russian 'castle' that was so cute! it remided me of the renaisance fair, only everything was authentic 17th century! we took a walk around Red Square. there is a big, beautiful building on one side of the square that is actually a shopping mall! there is another mall that is underground! you can see part of the top buildings from ground level, ... read more

We talked about Gogol's 'Revizor' in the literature lesson, and read a page about essay-writing techique in the afternoon. Ulitsa Trekhsvyatskaya is thawing so much that the middle part of the road is a river. The weather is warmer - plus 6 today - but it is dark all the time because of low grey clouds. A heap of snow the size of a car tyre crashed to the ground from the roof of a building twenty yards in front of me near bar Kalinin - I count myself extremely lucky that I bumped into Tamzin in reception before leaving the obshezhitie and chatted to her for a few seconds. There are a group of Uzbek gypsies that gather where Trekhsvyatskaya meets ulitsa Radischeva. The men have black beards and wear scruffy suit trousers and leather ... read more

!Today we went to the Hermitage museum. it was beautiful with fantastic rooms and art- but got boring very quickly. i spent almost 2 hours in the кафе (cafe) drinking capuccinos and coka-cola with cheesecake (nothing like american cheesecake). it is very difficult to communicate because i am too shy with my russian and they are all too shy with their english. its kind of funny. unfortunately, unlike most of the american tourists, i am also too shy to point at what i want. i only order what i can pronounce in russian and then deal with whatever i ended up ordering. we went to the Savior on the Spilled Blood Cathedral- absolutely stunning! the whole interior is mosaic tiled with pictures of Jesus and scenes from the Bible. the most amazing part was looking at ... read more

...and I feel fine! Hey ihr daheim! Ich bin endlich angekommen. Auf dem (ersten) Ziel meiner Reise. In Vladivostok. Also, alles in Ordnung. Nun was kann man sagen ueber so eine Zugfahrt. Es ist langweilig. Man befindet sich staendig in einem Zustand zwischen wach und Schlaf. Man liegt quasi die ganze Zeit. Der ... read more

today we went to a wax museum. it was very realistic- there were even a few of the room attendants were actually made of wax! u could hardly tell except they didnt breathe! after that, we went to the 'chocolate museum' wich is actually just a store selling chocolate sculptures. i bought a 'russian goofy' which didnt look like our goofy much at all. O MY GOODNESS!!! that was the best chocolate i have EVER had!! it was about an inch tall, but i felt warm and fuzzy even in the 30 degree weather here! we walked to the russian circus, which was so similar to the ones u see in movies of old france! i was so excited when i saw the concessions- ice cream was 20 rubles and cotton candy was 30! one USD$=27 ... read more
