Another day of tea, noodles and reading, I didn’t say much to my compartment companions but they was nice enough to offer me food and invite me to join a game of cards. There was a couple of stops during the day so I decided to stretch my legs and buy a bottle of coke (fed up with tea now). I managed to finish ‘After they killed my father’ and had run out of reading material so I started reading my Lonely Planet Trans-Siberian book from cover to cover, it starting to look a little dog-eared now. I ate in the restaurant car and headed back to my compartment, I only had about another 5hrs on the train before I had to get off, luckily there was another stop and my compartment mates decided to get ... read more

Hey, so its been a busy week, and i dont have much time to fit in all ive done in great detail, so i will do my best, please forgive me!! Last friday in moscow we finished our first few days of russian life in a traditional ukranian restaurant, with interesting results. we had no idea of what to order, so with what soundeed safest, smoked bacon a seemingly wise choice...what cam out however was essentially just a plate piled with pig fat, totally disgusting, but still a fantstic attempt by us to try everything. on saturday our train journey to siberia began, and was to be a fantastic 4 days, something which i had not expected. we filled our time with cards and a lot of eating and reading, and in the evening we partook ... read more

Part 1: Slip Slidin' away We knew there were two things in store for us on the overnight train trip from Ulaan Baatar in Mongolia to Ulan Ude in Russia: another tedious border crossing and bugger all sleep. We were correct on both counts. We also met our first Provodnista and Provodnik - the Russian cabin attendants, female and male respectively. They did not speak much English but they did their best to give us whatever information we needed. At any rate, their English way surpassed our non-existent Russian language skills so we were grateful for their efforts. Our readings had alerted us to the fact that there would be no dining cart on this train so we had stocked up on travel food before boarding and were all set for 28+ hours on the rails. ... read more

Tomorrow I begin my exit from Russia. I will be driven to Biysk (3 hours) and obtain my invitation to return to Russia later this summer. From Biysk I will take the train to Moscow (2.5 days) I will arrive in Moscow and head to Sheremetevo 2, my favorite airport in the world (note: sarcasm). I'll wait there for several hours before hoping a plane. I fly from Moscow to Copenhagen (layover) to Paris. I'll arrive in Paris at about 8:30pm Paris time. After that I will proceed directly to my hotel, shower (or take a bath if possible) and sleep. March 22'nd I'll search for the Russian consulate, attempt to begin processing my future visa and then promptly begin exploration of Paris. I'm not sure how long it will be until my next post, but ... read more

Olesya and I took the bus to Belokurikha on Saturday, March 1st. “It’s about 15 minutes away.” Maybe I misunderstood or misheard. Maybe it was, “It’s about 50 minutes away.” In reality, Belokurikha is about an hour bus ride drive from Biysk. I’ve heard of this town before. Many times when I’ve asked, “Where were you this weekend?” my students answer, “I was in Belokurikha.” The road to Belokurikha is excellent. There are almost no potholes, and there is lovely scenery. Putin has a summerhouse there. Belokurikha is to Altai Krai as Park City is to Utah. It’s a resort town and not entirely representative of the rest of the area. In fact it is in general discord with the surrounding area, at least money- and culture-wise. And damn if it isn’t beautiful. There are aspens ... read more

In Russia, there are two holidays, akin to Mother’s and Father’s Day. March 8th is like Mother’s Day, except that it is for all women… all women. March 8th is International Women’s Day. (I’m looking forward to this holiday) February 25th is the day for men, obviously akin to Father’s Day, although it really could apply to either men or women. February 24th is “Protectors of our Fatherland” Day. Why fatherland and not motherland, I’m not quite sure, but generally men receive some kind of gift and are congratuled. I spent Protectors of our Fatherland Day with an old friend, Nadia Arikova. Last year when I was in Gorno-Altai, my mom and I lived with a wonderful woman named Nadia. She fed us, took care of a visa registration discrepancy for us, and exposed us to ... read more

Strap yourselves in kiddies, this is a long one! After a fantastic 23 days traveling through Bali, Tokyo and China we finally came to another much anticipated leg of our journey: the Trans-Mongolian & Trans-Siberian Railway. The Beijing main railway station was a hectic scene, lots of people, lots of bags, lots of mess, lots of smells. Some people were sleeping in the waiting rooms, some crowding the escalators, some begging and some trying to help themselves to the contents of other peoples luggage - ours included! We had been warned by our guide to look out for pick pockets etc so when Kerry felt someone trying to open the bag on her back she knew what was going on and decided to carry all her gear in front instead. Getting on to the platform and ... read more
