Braving the Cold - My Walk Mario was sick for about 5 days, so we stayed in a lot, that was fine by me as the heating was great, outside was mostly dull and it was totally dark by 4:30pm. However, one of those days was beautiful and clear, so I went for a walk outside, took my camera and... (have a look) Snowflakes - Miracles of Beauty I have experienced a bit of snow in Victoria, Australia when I was very young and a bit in Norway and Japan. But that was nothing compared to what I saw in Poland. People had to shovel snow from their driveways, special trucks ploughed the snow and spread salt on the roads, lakes were frozen. There is even an anti freeze detergent you have to use for your ... read more

Mario and I somehow spent almost 24 hours getting to Poland even though our actual flight was only 2 and a half hours! Three busses, one plane and one car ride later, we arrived at Mario's parents house! The main Christmas celebration in Poland is on Christmas eve and usually involves a feast of 12 dishes. Even though I think the drinks were included in the 12 dishes, I was full halfway through!! Maybe I should have followed in Mariusz's (Mario's brother-in-law) footsteps and starved myself from 6am! He just kept eating and eating! Haha! At the beginning we each had a piece of rice paper with a religious print and had to tell each person your wishes for them whilst breaking a piece of their rice paper off and eating it! Halfway through the evening ... read more

BRATISLAVA - KATOWICE 01.10.08 Km traveled 3040 Jogging early morning, under the rain, with a backpack the size of yourself on your shoulders to catch the 5.54 train, is a MUST for every traveler. So we thought that was a good chance for us to show off our traveling skills. When you choose to take a train so early in the morning, when it's still dark, it means that things are going to be difficult. Otherwise you would have taken the 2.00 pm train! So obviously what should have been just an early morning journey from Bratislava to Katowice, with ONE change at Zilina, turned out to be an adventure. First part of the journey was actually fine if it wasn't for the early time. We arrive at Zilina almost on time after crossing the beautiful ... read more

Sorry for the lateness of this blog entry, although I guess alot of you in the northern hemisphere are on holiday anyway. We have been very busy here in Poland. But before that, Thailand. Once again it managed to deliver. We visited Chang MAi in the North, Train there and Plane back. We managed to do a fly by wire in the jungle. The largest of which was 150m high and 300m long. A kind of flying fox for adults in the tree tops. Bangkok was busy with plenty of shopping and the last day spent at a spa . A full body massage, manicure, facial etc. Very nice!!! The other 3 weeks were spent on a Island 3 hrs towards Cambodia from Bangkok, called KOh Samet. I managed a jet ski and we went on ... read more

Europe » Poland » Silesia » Gliwice July 31st 2008

First let me tell you where Gliwice is. It is close by, just west of Krakow, in southern Poland, a city of 200,000. Silesian Universtiy of Technology is here, attended by 32,000 students. One of the city's unique claims to fame, is the wooden radio tower. Perhaps the tallest in the world, 118 meters tall, (approximately 350 feet) But this trip wasn't for our usual sight seeing holiday. It was a chance for me to be of some use. In case you are looking for a different approach to travel, here's a formula that guarantees a memorable experience: -act on a whim. -build a house, one heavy cement block at the time -generate compassion within yourself "active desire to alleviate another's suffering" -form friendships with people from places you may never heard of. -just don't leave ... read more

Boarding the plane, i was asking myself: am I really flying to Poland right now? Right now I am in the Southernmost part of Africa, and in several hours I will be touching down in Krakow, Poland. It felt unbelieveable, and somehow also just the 'next step' on this journey that is in one sense so planned out and in another so unpredictable and spontaneous. And like so many other moments over the past several months, I found myself saying over and over in my head 'I can't believe I am doing this, I can't believe I'm doing this.....' I have now been in Poland for five days. We are at the Silesia Dance Festival in a small town called Bytom, here to perform our work 'Quartet for the End of Time,' the work that we ... read more

The first thing we do when we land in a new place is to get a street map and try to get ourselves oriented on it. This involves walking around quite a bit to see what's nearby in every direction from our hotel. So far, in Katowice we have seen lots of apartment buildings, one university, a few churches and some shops and restaurants. This place is not geared toward the tourist and so it doesn't have the pizzazz that can be found elsewhere. It's kinda of refreshing actually. Still, Katowice gives us an idea of what urban Poland can normally look like. A few interesting things have struck our eyes. One is that the fashions here are a bit more of a mish-mash than what we saw in Paris. At least some of the folks ... read more

At the moment i'm hanging out in the basement of my grandma's apartment in my hometown. I know, sounds great, it really isnt. I'd liek to say many things praising this city/town/whatever it is, but quite honestly, at the moment, its grey adn boring. Could have soemthing to do with the weather. I haven't seen the sun for going on a week now and i'm slowly starting to understand why some animals hibernate. When the world is cold, dark and dreary, who really wants to get out of bed. So far in Czestochowa, i've only really been to Jasna Gora ('light/bright hill') which in itself is a pretty amazing place. It is a massive church & monastery complex, the biggest in Poland. It was begun sometime in the 12th c, and has seen some pretty amazing ... read more

Ask a Pole, and disappointingly they’ll tell you it’s pronounced “cheshin”, not “cheese-in”.. and there isn’t any special cheese to be found :/ It’s a small border town divided by a shallow river, half in the Czech Republic, and half in Poland. These new EU id cards are a blessing for the border guards who work the bridges over the river. A quick look at photos and they can just wave everyone past - everyone that is, except us unfortunates from “other” places. Then they have to decide who’s turn it is, who’s got the keys to the office, who last used the stamps, and where they are. I spent a lot of time on the bridges :) We slept a night on the busy old town on the Polish side as trains only cross the ... read more

Europe » Poland » Silesia » Zywiec August 23rd 2007

How to quickly choose a place to visit with a couple of spare weeks and all of central Europe to pick from? Lying in Asia’s apartment with a couple of beers and a map laid out in front of us we faced just this dilemma. Fortuntely, the boys at the brewery made our decision a whole lot easier by naming their town after the beer (or perhaps vice versa). We were after somewhere between southern Poland and Suisse with mountains, a lake, and some good food and drink… Zywiec already fulfilled 3 ½ out of 4 of the criteria, we’d have to go there to sample the food. And that’s how we ended up wandering the empty streets at 10pm looking for a bed in the tiny 3 hotel town of Zywiec. The town is full ... read more
