Świętochłowice in Silesian Provine southern Poland with the Volvex Family 9-12 September We met the most wonderful people from Poland in Greece last year, who helped us with our (only) flat tier on our European journey over the last 2 years. Ela and Darek and one of their daughters Agnieszka, welcomed us in their home this year. We have been communicating via email since our brief meeting last year and they invited us to park our motor home in their drive and show us around their district. We were overwhelmed by their hospitality. They showed us so much of their region and fed us with all this wonderful Polish dishes.....and Ela is an amazing cook - yum! It was so good to be in a home and with such lovely people. Their daughter Agnieszka speaks very ... read more

After the long lovely day in Prague. Sunday morning a lie in was needed.A quiet day, well it started out that way. Called at the church of bones in Kutna Hora That was featurd in a long way round - bone cracking or not I think. . But not quite as cracking as the thunder storm this afternoon, it's been so hot, and to my amazement the rain was refreshingly good. We drove on into Poland .with out realising, still no boader post, fab quality motorway, could be England, apart from the lack of traffic & road cones About 400km to Waskilli... SL, a fab supper & hotel. Ostrawa Hotel, safe spot for bike. Breakfast with Queen - we are champions! So much UK music... read more

My grandfather was a pilot who fought in Northern Africa during the Second World War. He fought in the Rhodesian Air Force, alongside the Allied Forces. After his third escape in the desert, he was sent to the Prisoner of War Camp, Stalagluft III in Zagan, Poland where he was a prisoner in the camp for more than 2 years. Stalagluft III is one of the best known POW camps, as it was the setting of the largest escape by POWs during the war which came to be known as 'the Great Escape' in which 76 POWs escaped through the tunnel known as 'Harry'. Of these 76 men, 73 were recaptured and 50 of them were executed. My grandfather was one of the men waiting for his turn to escape through the tunnel when the tunnel ... read more

My request to the heavens for a celebration of my recent giving notice to my rapidly sinking language school was answered nicely as this weekend randomly and suddenly turned into a Polish road trip, with six (ex-)workmates to a cottage, built by our half-polish/half-czech comrade Jakub's family in the early 1990s. The cottage is situated in the village of Miedźno, near the city Częstochowa, which is one place I have been dying to visit for a long time. Our expedition to this cottage comprised seven people and two cars, who gathered in the early morning calm of the somewhat surrealistic Sídliště Rajská Záhrada on thursday, a Czech state holiday to commemorate the independance of Czechoslovakia from Austria-Hungary. The journey there was long and winding, and became noticeably more chaotic as we crossed into Poland (bringing my ... read more

I am starting to get organized to finish planning my trip to Poland. One of the first things I had to do was return to Manitoba and get my motorcycle and camper trailer back to Salt Spring. I left West Hawk Lake on August 19th and arrived back on Salt Spring on Monday August 23d. This was a costly journey as I had to replace the alternator on the bike as it failed just out of Winnipeg on the first day. That will be it for the HD-I am planning to get a BMW next year. I have a detailled itinerary but will be winging it a bit in Russia and the Baltics. In any case I am down to the last 2 days before leaving for Europe. lots of last minute stuff and I plan to climb ... read more

August 4 - Woke up today early, as usual. I saw Daria's mom before she left for work and she made me promise to eat some breakfast and to wake up Daria. I let her sleep but she work up early anyway. She made us some tortillas with cheese for breakfast that were delicious. Then we sat around watching some tv, including a cartoon movie about a horse in the wild west. Weird. Daria's mom came home at 11am and then we left for Cesky Tesin in the Czech Republic. It took a little longer than expected to get there as they were setting up for the tour de Poland to come through that day, like the tour de France. But we got there with plenty of time to spare, and so I bought the ticket ... read more

August 2 - Today I left Krakow. A shame, because I really like the town, but I have a few more places I would like to go before I go home, and I am starting to feel in the mood to go home. I woke up around 8am and went down to search for a hostel in Wroclaw, that I would be going to on Tuesday. I booked one that sounded nice, and then had breakfast with a bunch of people at the hostel that I have met over the last couple of days. I had to leave to catch the 11:05am bus to the tram to make it to the hair stylist for my noon appointment. That's right - I had my hair cut in Krakao today. I have been wanting to have it cut ... read more
