This morning it was time to pack our bags again after two nights in the very well located, but very small Ca 'dei Dogi. Definitely one of the smallest rooms we have ever stayed in with only about a metre of space on one side of the bed (the other side of the bed being right against the wall) and maybe only about 60 centimetres at the foot of the bed. The shower was amazing though with two shower heads to choose from and body jets!! Getting out of the shower without scraping against the basin or the bidet was a challenge though. It's a public holiday again today in Italy, this time for May Day which is equivalent to our Labor Day. The holiday doesn't seem to have made any difference to the vaporetto timetable ... read more

Thursday morning we set out for the Campo Di Martre train station in Florence, a different one from the one to which we arrived. Curtis, with map in hand, led us directly there. Honestly if he ever wants to get rid of me he would just have to send me out into a strange place, map or no map, and leave me. I have no sense of direction, even when looking at a map so it amazes me how he can just get us to our destination! We were to ride in 1st Class to Verona. We boarded our coach with dozens of others, many of whom had huge pieces of luggage. All of the other trains we have travelled on in 1st class have had some kind of luggage rack. Not this one. This poor ... read more

We stepped out of the Carnevale madness for a day last week and took a quick trip to Verona. Verona is lovely. Perched on the Adige River, Verona is anchored by a huge public square (Piazza Bra) and Roman arena (the largest outside of Rome). A UNESCO world heritage site, Verona is layered with history quite literally: Roman ruins sit side-by-side with structures from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and in some cases these structures are built one atop another. Much of the city, including that arena, is built with pink limestone from the area, giving it a rosy hue. Winding narrow streets with pastel-colored buildings, flower pots on balconies, and cobblestone pavement make this a postcard-worthy place. Each time I turned a corner, I wanted to take another photo. Verona, like many cities in ... read more

Jennie and I took a day trip into Verona on Saturday....call us crazy? We thought so too. It was worth the adventures and 8+ hours of trains however! The beautiful quirk about day trips is that they always must start bright and early in order to take full advantage of the time....buongiorno 7:15 am train ride. Another dark morning waking up to the pitter patter of rainfall on the Torino cobblestone. The train ride to Verona is about 3.5 hours so we should have arrived in Verona at 1015ish but the train was delayed a bit, as per usual treinattalia. I have learned that it's important to always add an hour of train travel time when traveling within Italy. Which is common with travel almost anywhere, delays happen, and delays happen quite often here With treinattalia ... read more

We started out our first full day in Verona with a delicious breakfast spread made for us by our host Rosanna. There was fresh fruit, eggs, yogurt, cured meats, cheeses, fresh biscuits, croissants and lots of Nutella :) After breakfast we figured out the bus system without struggling too much (taxis are extremely expensive in Verona) and headed to the city center. The bus dropped us off right outside Castelvecchio. This "old castle" was built in the 13th century during the rule of the Scaliger dynasty and was a very important military hub. As you wander around inside the walls of the still very sturdy Castelvecchio, it really does make you wonder about all of the things that went on when people actually lived there. We crossed the bridge of Castelvecchio over the Adige river and ... read more

It feels like its been forever since l last blogged, crazy how time flies here. I ended up feeling exactly as I thought I would when I left Lucca, like I wasn't ready and could stay at least another day... or forever ;) We woke up Monday morning in Lucca and went for a run on the path above the city walls. Altogether I've worked out about 4 times since I arrived here, which is around what I expected. But as I struggled after about only a mile, I still felt the need to blame in on the heat and humidity... so that's my story and Im sticking to it. After the workout, we did a bit of shopping and I purchased my first Italian leather item. All of the leather here is gorgeous, but this ... read more

After a good breakfast, we set out to find bus tickets so we could get into Verona. We ended up walking about half way to the city before we found anywhere but caught the bus anyway. The city centre of Verona is actually quite small like most of the older cities. This means it is really easy to walk around the whole city and take in all the sights on foot. We began at Piazza Bra which is a lovely piazza with lots of big trees and shaded seats. It is the centre of the city and there are dozens of cafes and restaurants that line the perimeter of the piazza. On the northern side, the Verona Arena dominates the view. It is basically like a smaller and much better preserved version of the coliseum in ... read more

Despite the late night, our Em alarm still went off at exactly 6:30am… so we had a good breakfast and got everything off the boat by 9:00. The place we parked the car said to call them when we are ready for pick up but with no phone and no payphones we had emailed the day before in the hope that would be good enough. We got a response this morning and all was well. There was another couple who parked at the same place and they had arranged pick up anyway. We loaded the car back up and took off into the Italian traffic once more. A leisurely couple of hours through the small towns and countryside brought us back to Verona. As we didn’t get a chance to look around last time, we decided ... read more

One last feed of the cows for Em then it was time to pack up. After cleaning up and saying our farewells, a taxi picked us up to take us to our rental car which was in Zell am See on the far side of the mountains about an hour’s drive away. We got the car with no problems but then realised that it had no satellite navigation system. As we like to stay off the motorways when we can, this is a pretty big issue for us. Their advice was go to another Europcar store to see if they had any handheld devices. Where is that? Innsbruck. 2 hours away. How do we get there? They produced a map of Austria and told us it was the best they could do. No detail even how ... read more

"We drove to Verona. It was a pretty long ride. When we got there we got to a hotel that was very, very nice. They gave us a drink and snack for a welcome. We then went to a bell tower. We walked up and the top had a very nice view. It was a lot of stairs. When I looked down so my dad can take a picture, believe it or not, sometimes I can be a little scared of heights. Then we walked back down. We went to the Verona Arena and it kind of looks like the coliseum, but it is not. I kept on following Vitor and holding on to his jacket. My dad took a picture of Vitor and I from the other side of the arena. It was cool. We ... read more
