Exchange Students Reunite 20 Years Later As a high school student in Oregon, I was lucky enough to be in the exchange program to Germany. I went back before college & worked as a nanny in Belgium. Next, I came home, went through nursing school, married an engineer and we have 3 great kids. Now that our kids are old enough to travel easily, my husband & I are finally getting to show them some of the Europe that I fell in love with! Not only are we planning to see Europe as wide eyed tourists, we have also made plans to visit my German exchange family. All 6 of the kids have been e-mailing back and forth to each other & they seem to like having pen pals over seas. We are all very ... read more

This is me and Anna Laura in Verona, right in front of the famous Arena. It was so hot, that day! At least in the evening it cooled down a little so we could enjoy the opera in the Arena. Apart from the Opera, Verona is famous for the Pandoro, a special Christmas cake, but of course it was completely the wrong season to taste it! ... read more

In fair Verona is where we lay our scene... We took off from class for Verona. We got to Verona, took the wrong bus but it went in the right direction at least, and headed UP A MOUNTAIN (basically) for our hostel... yes I said hostel. It wasn't so bad. There were 14 of us, 9 of which were girls, so we were in a 10-person room with some other girl. After dropping our stuff into a locked dresser, we went to the Arena area and ate an AMAZING dinner. That was the best pizza I've had while in Italy. Then climbed to the very top row of the Arena to watch the opera Aida. I found out I'm not one for operas. It was a great experience to be watching an opera in an ancient ... read more

After docking in Trieste, we drive to Verona, home to Juliet's balcony. LAter we make our way to our accomodation for the evening. Ate so much for breakfast on the ferry this morning - corn flakes, peaches, a croissant with cherry jam, a bolied egg, tea cake, ornage juice and tea - it's no wonder I'm putting on so much weight. Arrived at the port at about 9.30, which is 8.30 Italian time. Drove to Lake Garder (Lago di Garda) for lunch, which is a possible new Contiki stop. As the ferry now docks in Venice, and we can't check into the campsite until 6pm, they have to find stuff to do in the day as well as going to Verona, so it was our job to check it out. The town was really cool ... read more

We both took sabaticals in Sept. of 2002 and left the familiarity of home for 6 months of travel in Europe. We started by flying into Munich (only frequent flyer we could get) and immediately trained to Verona Italy. We visited Verona, Assisi and then to Montebaluna to visit Mary's cousin Favio Burrato and his family This was the start of 6 months of our lives that we will never forget. This experience changed the way we look at the world in general. Deciding to do this trip was THE BEST decision we have ever made. We stepped out of our very comfortable lives and by doing this it made us realize how great life is and how lucky and blessed we are. ... read more
