Lara and I spent the day exploring Ljubljana. As we waited for a bus into the city centre, a bus painted as an ice cream drove up and people got off to hand out free ice creams to everyone waiting at the bus stop! We walked around the old town and up to the castle to see the view. You can see as far as the Julian Alps which looked really pretty with a recent light dusting of snow at their peaks! In the afternoon, we walked around Park Tivoli and the forested hill beyond before tucking into our second ice cream of the day!!... read more

We arrived in Zagreb in the rain but it cleared up pretty much as soon as we got there. We went on a walking tour which took us from the cathedral, through the old town gate to Gornji grad (the upper town) where we saw the colourful roof of St Mark's church and stood by Lotrščak Tower where you can see over much of the newer part of the city. We got some very nice bread from a bakery for lunch, which we were just finishing as the rain started again!... read more

I'd almost forgotten what rain was after several gloriously sunny days, but then we went to Plitvice Lakes National Park. It rained really hard, but that didn't dampen my enthusiasm for walking the boardwalks around the impressive lakes and waterfalls. Lara, however, wasn't keen on letting me walk as she didn't think my cardboard legs would survive, so she kindly carried me around in her backpack, giving me an occasional look at the scenery! I was very glad I was carried when I saw how wet everyone else was!! We'd really like to see Plitvice again in the sunshine when you're able to see the lovely blue colour of the lakes more clearly, but it was blanketed in cloud the next morning when we set off to drive to Zagreb.... read more

We drove from Dubrovnik through a tiny bit of coastal Bosnia & Herzegovina at Neum, then back into Croatia, before heading inland to another border with Bosnia! From there, we drove along the Neretva river to Mostar. We went around a house built during the Ottoman period before walking further into the old town to see the Stari Most (old bridge), which has been rebuilt since its destruction in the war in the early 1990s. Although many of the central buildings have been reconstructed, bullet holes and the remnants of bombed buildings are visible around the city, providing a stark reminder of how recently the city was in the middle of a war. From Mostar, we went to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina. We saw the spot where Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated ... read more

I joined Lara on a trip that started by driving down the length of the Adriatic coast of Croatia. We spent our first night in Zadar, with its many churches, before driving on to Split. In Split, we explored the old town, which is mostly built in the remains of the Roman Emperor Diocletian's Palace! To get a view over the city, we climbed up Marjan hill, where I had my photo taken with Lara before running to catch the bus to Dubrovnik. The next day, we walked the city walls of Dubrovnik to get some lovely views over the city. We found a peaceful spot overlooking the walled city to eat our picnic lunch before trying to ride the cable car up to the top of the hill behind Dubrovnik, but our plan was thwarted ... read more

It was time for another holiday. This time Laura took me to South Africa. I had already been there (with Sarah E) but she hadn’t! We started in Cape Town where we saw all the sights including the Green Point Stadium which is one of the venues for the upcoming Fifa world cup. We then travelled along the coast stopping at various nice places until we reached Addo Elephant park. As the name suggests there are lots of elephants here and Laura saw a herd of over 40! Some of them were so close to the car they could have stuck their trunk in. We then went towards Cape Town stopping at some more places on the coast before heading inland to drive along route 62. Our last stop was the Cape Peninsula which is just ... read more

I am in Israel! It is my first trip here and my first trip with Tammy. She took me to lots of interesting places. The highlight was floating in the Dead sea. (I didn’t actually get to float - I’m made of cardboard and it probably wouldn’t do me much good!) ... read more

Last stop in China was Beijing. It was cold here (only 7 degrees) which came as a nasty shock after all these weeks of sunshine. We saw all the main sights including the Forbidden city and Olympic stadium, where Laura ran around on the covered track! We were somewhat unusual in Beijing for the fact that we were not in a large tour group. There are lots of massive groups here and they all have matching baseball caps of a given colour. We had to be careful not to be engulfed by them when they are on the move! ... read more
