Today I got back to my usual touring routine. I left the lakes and headed for Verona, home of the fictional Romeo and Juliet. I enjoyed Verona more than I expected to - I nearly didn't go there at all. There were some fun and interesting things to see. I walked around town following Rick's self-guided tour. The Roman arena (see photo) is made partially of pink marble (!) and is remarkably well preserved. There are other Roman ruins around town - city gates with typical round Roman arches and there's a theater built into the side of a hill. I liked the Verona's lively piazzas (see photos). The Courtyard of Juliet is a total fabrication, but even it has a certain charm (see photo). As I wandered around town I saw statues to the poet ... read more

Geo: 45.4448, 10.9995Walking tour of Verona this morning. Super weather; clear skies with the temperature reaching 26 degrees. Then in the late afternoon a talk by the co-author of the book (then 2010 movie) "Letters to Juliet" and another tour dinner. The author Ceil Friedman described how each year thousands of love-torn Dear Dorothy letters addressed to Juliet are received by the Juliet Club, and how a dozen or so "secretaries" provide a hand-written reply to each letter containing encouragement and/or advice. It seems a bit hysterical to me.We dined at the "12 Apostles" restaurant. When they were doing a cellar refurbishment in 1987 they uncovered (8m below ground) a well-preserved Roman road and the foundations of two ancient buildings. At their own cost they excavated these structures and preserved the remains. An interesting inspection. Th... read more

Geo: 45.442, 10.9955Well not sure when we got old but the way we are moaning and groaning makes it seem like it! Our feet and my back are tired... It's 6:30 pm and I'm at 15,767 steps and we still need to go out for dinner tonight and who knows where that will lead us? It's not really that many steps but I think it's the combo of so many days of walking on cobblestones and then standing on marble floors that make it seem more than it is.Today we got out at the crack of 11:30... Jim slept well last night for a change and I couldn't fall asleep until somewhere around 2 am, church bells woke me up around 8:30 am and there was no going back to sleep (and shouldn't have - we ... read more

Geo: 45.442, 10.9955Hello all,Arrived at the city of Romeo and Giulietta and they are definitely celebrated here! Left our appartamento in Milano with more than enough time to get to the train station. We finally met the building manager, no inglese, and found out where/how to recycle our garbage (mandatory), he told us where to find a Tabacchi to buy our metro tickets (no, not there...) and confirmed the route to the closest metro station (we got that right) Very nice guy and it was fun to try out my baby Italiano... The station was very close so didn't have to push our bags too far on the cobblestones, but navigating extremely narrow streets with cars driving past pushing bags is always an adventure! I'm making it sound worse than it was actually, it was really ... read more

Most people know Verona as the city where Romeo & Juliet is set; others (mainly Kiwis) may know it as a song by New Zealand band Elemeno P; I knew Verona as both, but I had also heard that it is one of the prettiest cities in Italy - which is some statement - so I had always wanted to go there see what the fuss was about. It was another Megabus from Turin to Verona and only the stinky man in the seat in front of me took away from the ride, which was four and a half hours long. It was hot - mid 30s - but it wasn't the humid heat that I had gotten used to in Cuba so I could handle it fine during the half hour walk between the hostel ... read more

We all slept in this morning, I had woken up at 5am couldn't sleep so did some writing until 7am then went back to sleep in Lexie's bed (she has sometimes crawled into bed with us) her bed was more comfortable than ours so it was a good sleep, we got on the road by 10.30 it is a long drive today, we are leaving France and going to Italy 7 hours driving if the roads are not busy. It was a good job that we went to Cannes, Nice and Eze on the cruise because we didn't stop today at all Malcolm just kept driving, on the motorways the driving is easy because it is mostly 3 lanes but of course you bypass all the cities so you don't get to see them at all, ... read more

Geo: 45.442, 10.9955We were on our way to the what is arguaby the most romantic city in the world but it didn't quite go according to plan. We caught the early train to the border from NIce allowing ourselves plenty of time to change trains and board our train for Genoa. The train station at Ventigmiligia was a bit scary, quite a few refugees sleeping in the covered areas, lots of police and general chaos. We then learned there was a train stike, our train to Genoa had been cancelled. A sigh of relief when we find out we are still early enough to catch the local train to Genoa. All goes well until a Trentalia official boards our carriage and tells us the train is now terminating at Savona. We have no idea where we are ... read more

We started our sightseeing this morning at the Museo Lapidario Maffeiano where we purchased 48 hour Verona Cards that entitle us to see pretty much everything that we want to see while we are here in Verona. The museum consisted of Etruscan, Greek and Roman stelae and funerary monuments. It certainly made us think. Here we were looking at headstones prepared for people who lived and died more than 2,000 years ago. In another 2,000 years there'll be no such tangible record of our lives and deaths as we move more and more to an entirely digital existence! We walked by the Arena, but it was ridiculously busy in and around the Piazza Bra which we assume was due to it being a holiday weekend and/or the 'Wings for Life World Run' that is on on ... read more
