Im in Cagliari now. The location part of this site is not working. In the train Olbia- Chilivani the airco were the open windows. A little hairy flying animal of about 2 cm flew in and started to make fun. Opposite of me a well dressed and well preserved woman of about 45 years old, looking like a teacher tried to catch the animal with a tissue and throw him out of the window. Did not like it , flew back in the train and started to attack the woman. All of a sudden he disappeared and the woman started to move. He had entered her premises down under and had fun. The lady made kind of jumps and stopped all of a sudden. 2 minutes and 5 meters further a big beng ended the life of ... read more

First time to be in Sardinia. Hotel Ancora is a simple tourist hotel and the tourist business is probably the only they have in Santa Teresa. Somehow I always feel more at home in Italy than in the Spain or Franch and perhaps the reason is that the Italians does not spek so much more english than the other countries but they are willing and doing their best to help you. Found it today again at the busstation, not really station but there are a lot of busses. One of the drivers wrote all the time possibilities I have to go to Olbia tomorrow and he did not speak one word english. Had yesterday my first coffee in 10 days. Espresso. Not the most healty one for the cholesterol. Spend the day at the beach and ... read more

The most expensive hotel on the trip was San Carlu in Ajaccio, Euro 69.00 for 16 square meter but the airco was good and the bed as well. An hotel that really plannes in advance for the at least 10 years old cabinet had already the ventilation possibility for the refregerator. Probably they were still saving to buy it. And as service they accepted a postcard for the USA and should bring it to he postoffice .Bravo San Carlu, better service than EXPO Valencia. Even if in the end they donot do it, it gave a good feeling. I ll check if the card arrives in the USA. My french friend Jean Pierre goes already on holiday to Corsica for ever and I admit Jean Pierre it s beautiful. My 36 hours stay was perhaps a ... read more

Our 3rd day in Sardinia began in the same manner as the last - pathetic breakfast at the "B&B", then a morning at the beach. This time the beach was lovely, and we were looking quite fit sitting alongside some bulging beauties from Poland. We were happy to see a flag raised nearby where we were sitting that said "Alghero: Catalan Country of Sardinia" - força al català! I should also mention that by this point I looked like I had a plethora of third nipples all over my body thanks to mass-quantities of insect bites that I had incurred during the night. Once we'd had our fill of the beach we again chose to go the cheap lunch route and had another round of oil-soaked delicacies washed down with Sardinian beer. This time we added ... read more

Day two started out with breakfast in our B&B. Now, when I say B&B one might have visions of a fabulous old Sardinian villa with a spread of fresh peaches from the trees outside, pastries from the grandma living down the road, and cheese's made from the cows and goats in the pasture. Wrong. In our B&B we have packaged "breakfast pastries" as well as some jams, juices, and espresso. It's free, so we're not really complaining I guess. Since it was nice outside we sat it fit to spend a couple hours at the beach, some 7 minutes from our abode. Alex and I affectionately refer to our neighborhood as the slums, but its really not bad at all, just ugly residential buildings that look all the same, some cats, and not the best upkeep. ... read more

Our 4:30-ish flight to Alghero on RyanAir went quite smoothly despite RyanAir's brain-damaged check-in policy for non-EU travelers and their Nazi-esque "does your bag ACTUALLY fit in the metal thing?" baggage policy. With our arrival in Alghero, or L'Alguer in Catalan, I have now been to every major Catalan-speaking region: Andorra, Spain's regions of Catalunya, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands, France's Pyreneés Orientales department, and now L'Alguer. Alghero was founded in 1102 by the Genoese for centuries until in 1353 the Aragonese under Bernardo de Cabrera arrived. What then ensued was essentially ethnic cleansing as the population was replaced by Catalans and Catalan became the city's prominent language. By the early 16th century Alghero received the status of King's City (ciutat de l'Alguer) and began to legitimately develop. Eventually it would become know as La Barcelone ... read more

Perhaps I am repeating myself but the place we have discovered is truely FANTASTIC! It is near the beach without beaing in the center of all the chaos during the summer month, granted now is the mid season... The owners of this little holiday rental / B&B had the great idea of giving their home a name La Rosa Dei Venti they are on a hill and can always establish where the wind is coming from. As mentioned in yesterdays entry they are starting up their own website, which I must say so far is looking rather professional. Have a look www.vacationsardegna.com Soon you will even be able to book directly via the site. A few friends and neighbours have joined together and will all be featured on the site. All I can say Riccardo & ... read more
