SO! Then we arrived in Cagliari, and had to kill some time while Enrico finished his day at the beach. We chucked our luggage in the local bus terminal’s luggage storage for a bit of cash, then ate some self-prepared lunch and decided to go for a wander. We found ANOTHER tourist info place, got a map, and then legged it. Cagliari as far as we can tell from our small adventure is a very pretty place. Unfortunately for some reason while we were walking around it started to get hot. Very hot. Not only that, Sardegna has shade poverty, and that means that fishies get over sweating like a paedophile in a pre-school very quickly. After walking along a castle wall for a good ten minutes, I got sick of trying to find a way ... read more

Howdy y’all, Nemo here. A lot has happened in a so I’m going to try and keep it so that doesn’t become brain-achingly painful to read. Here goes... We went back to Mazury for Ciocia Malgosia’s 50th, meeting a whole heap of people from all over the place. What a group of people. I was introduced to friends of the family, relatives both close and distant, and I waffled on in my nearly unintelligible Polish and they laughed and we all got along like a house on fire, both young and old. The person I got along best with was Konrad, a best friend of Dominika’s. He is currently finishing his PhD in econometrics, so he’s a pretty smart dude, and generally views the world in pretty much the same way I do. We drank a ... read more

Photos are on Flickr at April 2009 NYC-Sardinia-Madrid Day - Thursday April 16 I arrived at my niece's on Long Island yesterday after a 2 hour delay in Philadelphia. She lives in Ronkonkoma. I went into NYC today. She of course went into work much earlier. Her neighbor took me to the train station at 9 because I had to meet the tour group at noon. I rode the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) for over an hour passing garbage strewn all along the right of way. There were many building adorned with the latest graffiti artist's work. We stopped every 5 to 10 minutes at stations with names like Ronkokoma, Wyandach, Islip and Bethpage. The scenery was all people, cars, trucks, buses, buildings, housing developments, and the only open spaces were cemeteries. The train was relatively ... read more

Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean; Sicily is the largest. It was colonized by the Phoenicians in the 7th century B.C.; the first city was settled by the Carthaginians. It was captured by the Romans in 238 A.D.; controlled Pisa and Genoa in the 13th century and then the Spanish Kingdom of Aragon. Eventually it was controlled by Italy but our guide told us the natives of the central part of the island don’t speak Italian or Spanish but Sardinian, a language that is a combination of both. She couldn’t speak it as she was only taught Italian in school. Traffic was terrible because tomorrow starts the Festival of Sant’ Efisio, the patron Saint of Sardinia. Seems like in the area there is a festival for something almost every ... read more

4.4. Takaisin Cannigioneen Matkasta kohti Sardiniaa tuli alusta asti hiukan haasteellinen. Paikallisbuss... read more

April 3, 2009 We went to the beach today! YAY! I was supposed to get up at 8, but fell right back asleep and didn’t get up till 9:15. We almost missed breakfast, but made it downstairs in time to grab some croissants and buns. After breakfast, we got ready in our room and then met the others in their room. It was a very relaxed morning and we weren’t out the door till like 10ish I think. We were going to take the shuttle from the hotel, but asked Luigi, the front desk worker who has become our wonderful Italian friend, and he said we can take the bus. Hollie knew where it was and we rode that around all day for free. Our first stop was Poetta beach. We rode the bus until its ... read more

April 2, 2009 Today we got a good start on the day. It was really hard to wake up this morning, but we got up anyway in time for our continental breakfast. Even though there was more of selection here than in Paris, the baguettes and jam in France beat this breakfast. We got back to our room and got ready and then soon met up with the other room. Hollie found a supermarket very close by, so we went there to get groceries and snacks for the day. We were able to take a shuttle from the hotel to city center for only 25 euro! Amazing! (I paid 3.60 for bus.) The guy dropped us off and we wondered around. We attempted to find the beach, with no luck. We walked for a good couple ... read more
