Made it down to Sardinia for a few days chillout on the beach. Caught the overnight ferry over from Citavecchia and then a bus down from Olbia to Cala Galone where I am now. The beaches are stunning, but its really quiet. Its pretty nice after Naples though. I've pretty much seen enough old buildings and churches now! Also I caught a bit of a cold since leaving the helpx place so its quite nice to relax for a while n get over it! This place would be pretty cool for a holiday. Really good if you're into rock climbing, walking or mountain biking. The scenery is stunning, and the beaches are really nice. Crystal clear waters. The one I went to today was a bit stony though - not that I'm comlaining! It was lovely:O) ... read more

Let me just say this...Alghero was gorgeous...but this was probably the worst vacation we've ever had. Not because of anything in the town itself (except maybe our icky apartment) but it was just a bad vacation. We went with another couple, Mike and Maria. Mike works with Matt and Maria and I have gotten to be pretty good friends since we moved here. We planned this trip pretty last minute and, after we booked our flight, we discovered that this weekend was the height of high season in Italy because it was a public holiday. It's like trying to find a last-minute hotel in Daytona on Memorial Day weekend. So, we pretty much took whatever we could find that we could afford and I found an apartment that slept 4 right in town in Alghero. They ... read more

Back again with another episode of the latest version of my trails around the world. This time battling on a new front...Italy. Sardinia, is one of the islands at the end of the "boot" of Italy, deep in the Med Sea. The water is clearer than a teenagers face after a bottle of clean and clear, and the weather is hotter than a Paris Hilton jail cell. My first experience with Ryan Air was a mixed one, the flight was quite good and fast, but you can really tell the budget side of things when it came to the landing, which felt like the plane dropped from about 50 metres. After going through customs ( a small hut off the runway ) my traveller instincts kicking in straight away, and instead of getting a taxi to ... read more

Looking at this year calendar, the date of going home is drawing closer and closer. If i didnt take any action now, i will end up doing nothing and achieving nothing. When i say achieving nothing, i mean not travelling to anywhere.Though at least i think i shall still be able to get my Msc done. So, to make things happen...i frenzyly look through all low cost airlines websites.. damn, the price has gone up. I should really book the flight that i saw before the last May bank holiday. It was a deal flying to Marrakesh for less than 50 pounds. Now the price has rocketing up..( i then found out i need Visa for Marrakesh, it must be a blessing in disguise, as i didnt got the ticket booked) Just when i was about ... read more

Hi everyone, Things are going great in Sardinia. We have gotten back from the mountains (the most secluded part of all of Europe) and are now at a resort in the southern eastern coast. It is very nice. The view is amazing. I have my own balcony that over looks the beach. Since my last blog, I have done a lot of geologic mapping. It is not all fun and games here. We have also had some interesting cultural experiences like going to a wine festival at a vinyard (all you could eat and drink) and going to a festival in the mountains with people that could not speak any English. they were very simple farmers and herders, and treated us so nicely. We ate and drank with them in the mountains and had a ... read more

Things are great. We turned in our first mapping project and I am very proud of the map I made. Yesterday we had a day off to celebrating being done. We took it easy until around 3:30 when we went to a wine vineyard for a festival. It was great. Free food (salami, cheese, mini pizzas) and all the wine you could drink..for free. They gave red, white and sparkling. It was pretty good. There was also traditional Sardinian music and dancing and we went on a tour of the wine cellars. Huge barrels of wine!!! The rest of the night was spent recuperating. Today we had an easy day of lectures and then drove around looking at volcanic rocks for our next project. Ok, I am going into town today. Speak to you all later. ... read more

The twisties seemed to go on forever! Entire tanks of gas were ridden in third gear, that magical, catch all gear that seems a perfect combination of speed and torque. Every now and then I’d have to engage 4th gear to punctuate a short straight or dab down into 2nd for a tight switchback. The rest of the time, 3rd gear was more than willing to take on the brunt of the load. Two-lane twisties for as far as you could see. Hard left followed by hard right and on and on… Now, I love twisty roads as much as the next guy but, I began to wonder if a few straights every now and then might bring some relief! The curves came literally one right after the other, mile after mile. With the temperatures reaching ... read more
