Ahhh the trek to Pompeii. It was epic. That is all. Some people said I couldn't do it alone, others called me mad. Do I listen? Do I ever? Of course I bloody didn't... and so I trekked it solo from Rome to Napoli(Naples) on the Eurostar. Then caught the local train to Pompeii. I really enjoyed the time to myself and being able to remind myself that I can actually travel alone. I've done it before, nothing has changed. The scenery was just magnificent on the way down through the mountain ranges. I got to have a quick browse around Napoli Centrale before hopping on the local to Pompeii. This train ride took me right past Mt Vesuvius so I got a good look at the rock before the ruins. Jared had pre-warned me that ... read more

Over breakfast at the hotel we discussed what each of us knew and was expecting from our day trip to Pompeii. We all knew that it was an ancient city that had been destroyed by the ash that decended on it following the erruption of Mount Vesuvious and that most of the population had suffocated before they could escape. We also knew that preservation work allowed us to see the town as it was before the devastation. During the excavation and restoration work, air pockets had been discovered in the ash within which bodies had disintegrated, so the archeologists had been able to pump plaster into the pockets to create a cast of the people who had died there. (We also knew the story about how Dr Who had caused it all in order to protect ... read more

We arrived in Rome to start off our 12 day Contiki tour. We had our first meet and greet over dinner. There were 29 people in our tour group and Katia was our tour group leader. Most of the group were from Canada but there were also some other aussies and some people from the U.S, Singapore, South Africa, NZ and Japan. There were 6 couples so we weren’t the only ones! It was exciting to meet everyone and to get to chat to other people after being on our own for almost a month! It was a really fantastic group and we all became great friends over the next 12 days! We were also pleasantly surprised to be given the suite at the hotel. The bathroom was as big as some of the rooms we ... read more

Friday was a magical day! The first magical thing was that Kimmy had slept for over 12 hours and woke up her a little groggy but was soon her usual cheerful energetic self. The next magic trick was that we got onto our 9am tran to Naples at 8:59. Just as we sighed into our seats, we felt the forward motion began. Phew! The tran rde was very nice - beautiful vews of the mountains, and very comfy seats. t was a high speed train ... only 1 hour 10 minutes to Naples. Not even long enough for us to fnsh our scrabble game. The only snafu of the day was when we arrived n Naples. The hotel is, as advertised, very close to the train station, but we walked right past it,then all the way ... read more

We woke up this morning (Saturday) to the beautiful SUN. it was unfortunately windy (Italy had begun a freak weather pattern and the weather in the South was colder than it should have been...and no one was really prepared for the cold and didnt have the right clothes). but we were so excited about the sun that we ran to shore..across from our hotel, and waited for Giuliana there to take photos (knowing the tardiness of many of us, Giuliana told us to be outside and ready 15 minutes before the bus was coming to get us...so we had plenty of time for ocean pictures). The agenda for that day was to go to Pompeii, the city that was destroyed by ridiculously strong eruption of Mt. Vesuvius (the eruption was so strong that it blew OFF ... read more

As we headed south towards Napoli, we found ourselves lodged between some pretty massive hills and the ocean. It was very interesting because the flatland that surrounded us was actually very reminiscent of the area of Queensland around where my Aunty Tracy lives, near Ashford or Bonshaw. It's very dry but there are still a lot of green areas and patches of Eucalypts and Wattles. If you had told me 12 months ago that I'd be seeing Wattle in Italy, I would have definitely scoffed, but as we drove the yellow blooms were more and more frequent. Along with the wattles and countryside, we also had a steady stream of hookers by the side of the road to keep us entertained, as we made a game of rating them out of ten, most of whom never ... read more

Friday 5.2.210 day 114 Pompei We went to Pompei today not know we accidently walked in the exit but as we were looking for the ticket office we walked out another exit and payed if we had have know we could have see it for free. It was worth the €11 each to get in. It was good to go in winter when there was almost no one there. We got to see the whole site in about 3 hours some of the houses that say you have to book ahead to see where even open for us to see. It is 66 hector site that was a city housing 20,000 people about 10 % of then died when Mt Vesuvius erupted. There was an earth quack a few years before and a lot of the ... read more

Wednesday 14th October Pompei - A city excavated It is not such a beautifully fine morning but it is still dry and we hold out hope that the partly overcast sky will clear for our trip to Pompei. After yesterdays running of the gauntlet, now to be known as “How to avoid oncoming Italian drivers on narrow roads”Gretchen has relented and said she would drive RR out of Sorrento to visit nearby Pompei rather than dismantle the car & remove it from the area piece by piece. The short drive off the peninsula went without a hitch and we didn’t even meet any cars on the twisting, winding road down the hill to the main road. We did however take the wrong for in the road and ended up driving through the ugly city of Castelammare di Stabia ... read more

What can I say about this amazing place? After nearly 2000 years it's amazing to be able to see a city where people lived and worked. Sadly most of the items found in Pompeii have actually been sent to a museum in Naples (Napoli) so you can't see the houses as they were found, but the buildings themselves are fantastic. In some cases there are also still fresco's on the walls and fantastically tiles floors. The Amphitheatre was particularly interesting as there had been a riot there and it was closed down for around a decade. (I can't remember what caused the riot mind you and I've sent my journal back to Oz). The city is much bigger than I had expected so I wasn't able to get around it all. One of my favourite things ... read more
