So, I finally went to Rome. It only took 4 months. Getting to Rome from Bologna is, unfortunately, not cheap. The absolute cheapest tickets you can buy for Rome are the ICs which are 36 euros and take at least 4 hours to get there. Awesome. Less awesome part is also that the ICs get booked really quick, and you can get "non guaranteed seating" tickets which basically say you hve to chill in the aisles on a fold out chair and get up every time someone comes through. Not okay for a 4hour train ride. Of course, that meant paying for a frecciarossa--a cool 58 euros. one way. AWESOME. well. at least it was 2 hours and super comfortable (and we just got food stipend and reimbursement money so i did not mind too much ... read more

Okay, i know...i know, i've been slacking. And this should really be a blog about ferrara or roma, but is going to instead be a small little rant (not even really a rant but an observation)...and the apparent internal temperature of americans versus italians. it is currently 70 degrees. which, in the US, means tank tops, shorts, skirts, sundresses and sandals....to italians that still means long sleeves, boots, and jackets. i wore a tank top under my lightest coat (a trench) with jeans and flats...and was sweating by the time i got back from the grocery store carrying everything (its a 10 minute walk, but still) while watching italians, some of whom were in what looked like WINTER coats. i dont understand. well, i guess i sort of do. given the lack of air conditioning in ... read more

For Easter, I finally got a chance to go visit my relatives in San Valentino in Abruzzo Italy, a tiny town in the Appenini mountains in central Italy where my mom was born (Travelblog does not actually have this town listed...showing how small it is). Well, its an absolutely beautiful medieval town that has amazing views wherever you were. Of course, i didnt get there till 10 at night on Thursday because i had a class until 2, and the next available train i could legitimately make wasn't till 5:30--so four hours later i get to Pescara, and then 25 minutes after that arrive in San Valentino. Brief interlude before i get on to describing my weekend, I took an IC (intercity) train for the first time, which pretty much look like harry potter trains and ... read more

By this day we had pretty much exhausted Taormina and had heard good things about Catania, so we decided to take the hour bus ride there. Everyone who said good things about Catanialied. Catania is probably the one place I left in Italy and says that I have absolutely no desire to go back to. Now, i am sure it is probably nice if you live there. but for tourists it is not a good city. especially if the weather isn't nice. It took an hour for us to even find the main duomo, which was pretty, but not necessarily pretty enough that it was worth the trip. There was a food market right around the corner that probably would have been cool except it was a fish market and the smell of fish makes me ... read more

The sun was shining once again when we woke up, and today was supposed to be the warmest (in the morning) so we made plans to go to the beach, because even though it was colder than we would like, we had to at least see the Sicilian beach. To get to the Taormina beach you can take a cable car from the top to the bottom (aka, down a mountain), which all my friends seemed to think was an awesome idea. Me? not so much. i was petrified (cable cars may be the scariest thing in the entire world). but it was one of those things you would never be able to do again so i bought my ticket (yes i had to pay to be shaking in fear) and waited. Going down the mountain ... read more

So I was the big pusher of going to Taormina during spring break. i had gone there five years ago and absolutely loved it. i went in high school and absolutely fell in love with the town. it was the first place we stopped on our tour and after a hellish day of traveling that included a flight that got overbooked and everyone's luggage being lost, we woke up to a ridiculously gorgeous view and spent the day roaming around this wonderful town. Clearly, it was a necessary place for me to revisit. Our first day was a complete wash--it poured the entire day--and after a small breakdown after reading the weather report (rain ALLL week)--i woke up to sun and gleefully ran through our cold hostel room (clearly this hostel was not prepared for cold ... read more

Okay, it's sort of sad that an ENTIRE entry is being given to the train from Napoli to Sicily, but it needs to happen and be explained in all its glory. While planning our trip we initially looked to take a plane from Napoli to Sicily but neither EasyJet nor Ryanair flew to where we needed them to go. As a joke, i checked trenitalia to see if you could get a train from Napoli to Taormina. Fun fact: you can. There must be, we reasoned, a bridge. As I said on the last entry, the train was at 11:35 and we had a private cabin. I dont know what i thought this private cabin would entail but it was adorable. It was confusing at first because this woman who works on the train took our ... read more

March 24th 2010

So last day of Napoli. This was our only completely free day and originally we were thinking of going to Capri, but the weather was bad and the seas were rough and choppy and therefore was not a good idea. The day started with an early morning because Vanessa, Lia, Tamar and I had to go to the station to secure a ticket for our night train to Sicily (yes: there are trains to Sicily). Since it was a night train and Napoli wasn't the safest area, nor was Sicily, we decided that the best option would be to see if we could get a private cabin that we could lock. Obviously the ticket would be more expensive but it was worth. Luckily, there were no problems at the station and we were able to get ... read more

Day 3 of the Napoli trip we went to Mount Vesuvius (the ACTIVE volcano that is responsible for destroying Pompeii and herculaneum). Knowing it would be colder than normal, since we would be ontop of a mountain, i layered on what clothes i did have--leggings under my jeans, 2 pairs of socks, and a tshirt under my spring sweater and my northface. The bus was quite long. it was at least an hour, circling up a mountain. which, to anyone who knows me, kind of blows.t he entire process of going up in some kind of moving object freaks the crap out of me. especially in buses that seem WAYYYY to big to be allowed on the road. Before we really started going up the mountain, we made a short detour, and while we sat for ... read more

We woke up this morning (Saturday) to the beautiful SUN. it was unfortunately windy (Italy had begun a freak weather pattern and the weather in the South was colder than it should have been...and no one was really prepared for the cold and didnt have the right clothes). but we were so excited about the sun that we ran to shore..across from our hotel, and waited for Giuliana there to take photos (knowing the tardiness of many of us, Giuliana told us to be outside and ready 15 minutes before the bus was coming to get us...so we had plenty of time for ocean pictures). The agenda for that day was to go to Pompeii, the city that was destroyed by ridiculously strong eruption of Mt. Vesuvius (the eruption was so strong that it blew OFF ... read more
