Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius 17 Oct 2013 We arrived at the Zeus Camping Village at about 6.00pm. This is about 30km out of Naples. On the way we tried to visit the archeological site of Herculaneum which is where Erolano district now is, but we couldn’t find a park anywhere so we drove onto Pompeii. Herculaneum is closer to Mt Vesuvius so was totally buried in the AD 79 eruption and was even more preserved that Pompeii. It was rediscovered in 1709. Never mind, we will see it next time (!!!). The camping site was excellent and only 5 minutes walk from the entry of Pompeii Archeological site. After a cool night - and we are noticing the days are getting shorter - we caught the 10.00am tour bus up to Mt Vesuvius. There were about ... read more

Geo: 40.7492, 14.5007 We had lovely breakfast in the balcony and I could linger in the balcony whole day for the amazing views of Capri but we had to leave today. We really enjoyed our stay at Gocce de Capri and Claudia made us feel like home. We walked to Termini and bought the tickets from the shop for the bus which is on the same side as the shop, opposite the supermarket to go to Sorrento station. We were relieved that the strike was called off and the trains were running but with delays at the Circumvesuviana Train at Sorrento. We waited in the dilapidated grubby train for half hour due to the delays before the train started and it stopped at few stops before reaching Pompeii Scavi which took about 30 minutes. On reaching the ... read more

It has been a whole new experience being in Italy in the summer rather than the fall and winter. It’s hot all the time! I’m thinking I’ll get back to Boise with a crazy tan. *Fingers crossed*. The beach is a whole experience in itself. Saturday we went to Paestum where there are ruins of a Greek colony. There are three temples still standing in great condition and it was so cool to see those and how grand they are without having to go to Greece. It was beautiful and we had lunch at a really excellent restaurant overlooking one of the temples. After that, we walked down to the beach and swam in the Mediterranean (check that off my bucket list) and laid on the white sand beach for a couple hours. Swimming in the ... read more

The work we are doing in Pompeii has been so much fun. When Katie invited me to join the team I simply assumed we would be volunteers, but in actuality, Katie and David are working to create a field school to work here in Pompeii. So while we are helping out as volunteers, the importance is really on educating us in technique and post excavation processing. We are their first group of students for this and hopefully attributing to them blazing a trail with a new field school organization. The house we are working on is the Casa delle Vestali (the House of the Vestals) and was originally one smaller house that eventually bought out many of the surrounding shops and houses and renovated into a larger house, probably owned by a wealthy family. The house ... read more

Wow. I can’t believe that I am back in Italy. The second I got into the city I was so joyful at the familiar smells, sounds, buildings, and trees that are just so uniquely Italian. Everything is familiar and I am so comfortable with being back in this culture. I’m pretty sure that my taxi driver from the airport to the campsite somewhat ripped me off. It’s happened to me before and I used to know enough Italian to point it out, but I couldn’t remember anything to try and refute the price, and frankly I didn’t even care that much because it was just so good to be back in Italian culture where people try to take advantage of you financially simply because you’re American. Plus he was really friendly and helpful so it’s basically ... read more

Greg: After our series of buses and trains to arrive late at Pompei, we were content with some serious relaxing before tacking the next day. Greeted with a cold beer on arrival, free map for the local ruin site and a seat on the poolside sunlounger - we figured we had found the place to do just that. A quick cooldown swim later and all we had to do was wrap a towel around ourselves before sitting down at one of the small tables overlooking the water. We were in for a treat for dinner too, as it was put on by Giuseppe who ran the B&B (Italian chef who has trained in France) alongside his dad Domenico and all topped off with home made red wine from his grandfather - perfect! Given we had fufilled ... read more

Sorry to inundate you with blogs but I'm not sure what my next B&B will have in the way of wi-fi or free internet so I am taking advantage of the lovely facilities of Hotel Santa Caterina while I can as I am off to Sorrento tomorrow mornng. Pompei gets all the attention but I personally liked Herculaneum much better. First, it is much smaller. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has been ruined by ruins. I am so sorry I just couldn't help that one. But, truthfully, after about twenty minutes they all pretty much begin to look the same. Pompei was a working town of about 20,000 when it was hit while Herculaneum had only about 5,000. It was a resort town for rich and famous Romans. The homes that have been ... read more

My mother's name was Katherine and here I am at the warm and welcoming Santa Caterina hotel (www.hotelsantacaterinapompei.it)- coincidence? I think not. Yesterday when I was scouting out a new place I spotted this one on my way to the ruins of Pompei and was welcomed by a vivacious and stunning young woman named- are you ready for this- 'Juicy'! Not only did she assure me the hotel had heat but she printed out the codes for their wi-fi and pointed out the computer in the lobby (which I am now using) as mine to use anytime I wanted for free. Then she showed me my future room- king size bed, huge bathroom with actual fluffly towels (and lots of them)-even little bitty ones for the bidet. I almost cried. Did I mention it was warm? ... read more

One more sweet Maxim story- as he was putting my bags into the car he spoke quietly to the driver. I had no idea what it was about since it was all in Italian. I discovered that he had mentioned to the driver my wish to see the Bay of Naples before I left the city. The area I had stayed was far away from the Bay. How, tragic, I thought to be so close and not to see that fabled vista. So off we went. Me in the back seat in awe of the interplay of traffic where motor scooters weave in and out like a swarm of deranged bumble bees. I would love to see a "run off" between scooter drivers in Italy and and those in Hanoi. Anyway, back to Angelo, my driver. ... read more

Francesca and I started the day really early. We said our goodbye's to Ricco & Gia hoping to meet again in Paris, France! Oui, Oui! A cab was waiting for us and Francesca opted to get in the front seat ... what a mistake!! She was introduced to a near death experience as the taxi driver drove fast, ran red lights, had several near misses with other cars, was texting & driving, & seemed to be sniffling with a cold. Phew we made it to Piazza del Popolo in one piece and a little early. We found a coffee place and had cappuccino & crescents. The tour guides were at the center part of the Piazza and we got checked it. Our group was smaller than the Tuscany Wine tour so we stickered up and headed ... read more
