Unfortunately the rain followed us to Lucerne but after we checked into the hostel (can’t afford anything else in Switzerland!) we found a dry spot to watch Aus V Ghana in the world cup. It was a nail biter of a game and we were happy with the draw. It probably would have been a different result if Kewell wasn’t sent off. Oh well.... by the time the game was over it was dry enough to go exploring. Lucerne is really stunning with it’s beautiful lake, medieval buildings and ramparts and the famous Chapel Bridge, water tower and needle dam on the river. There are pretty gruesome (but cool!) “dance of death” paintings from the 17th Century along the Chapel Bridge. We walked along the old city walls and once we were up high we caught ... read more

On the train ride to Zurich we went past the Rhine Falls, Europe’s biggest waterfalls. They looked amazing even from the train! Unfortunately when we arrived in Zurich it was very wet We know Zurich is in a lovely setting but we couldn’t see much! The long walk to the hotel in the rain wasn’t much fun but we made the most of our time and headed back into the city after dumping our bags. We decided that comfort food was in order - fondue or course!! Our very expensive dinner (everything is ridiculously priced here) consisted of a HUGE pot of bubbling cheese, bread and wine! Yum!! Unfortunately that much cheese didn’t sit too well in our stomachs after! We decided not to go for the chocolate fondue for dessert. The following day in Switzerland ... read more

We decided to leave Fussen early so we could drive along Lake Constance on the way to the Black Forest. We stopped just outside of Lindau for breakfast/brunch. Once we were fuelled we put Konstanz into our GPS (Karen - Richie’s other woman) and hit the road until she took us to a ferry stop! We decided to save our pennies and as we weren’t in a rush we continued driving along the lake instead of getting the ferry. It was a lovely drive! The lake is massive! There’s a bike ride all the way around which we’d like to do one day (just another thing on the list!). We stopped in a small town near the end of the lake (Bodman-Ludwigshafen) to stretch our legs and take in the view. We nearly had to call ... read more

First of all - the answer to our question from the Munich blog... Who said “ I could live on beer, pretzels and sausages forever!!!!” It was Lysh!! This coming from the girl who couldn’t even stand the smell of beer before we left! From Munich we drove on the A95 (yes the autobahn!) to Fussen. As you probably know there is no speed limit on the autobahns. We’ll just say that all 6 gears of our hire care were well used! Off the autobahn we passed some beautiful mountains, green countryside and lots of cows, forests (we saw a cute squirrel), rivers, a huge lake (Froggensee) and lots of little towns. We loved seeing all of the maypoles in the towns. Fussen is at the end of the romantic road (this name was given by ... read more

We arrived in Munich just in time for a walking tour (note for future travellers that New Europe walking tours are excellent. They’re in lots of cities and work on a tips only basis). We saw all the main sights in the city area -Frauenkirche (Church of our lady), memorial to the German Resistance, Marienplatz and the glockenspiel, the Hofbrauhaus and the old and the new town halls to name a few. We had a laugh walking down Maximilian Straβe where all the rich people shop and they stand out with their sports cars, orange tans and bling! Our tour guide told us that the locals call these people schmicky mickeys! It was a really hot day so we thought the next stop had to be a biergarten! We headed to the Viktualienmarkt which is a ... read more

From Prague we caught the train to Regensburg. It was a nice trip through pretty countryside. We had planned on going to Munich but had to delay this for a couple of days because there was a trade fair on and accommodation was out of our price range. We arrived in Regensburg late so didn’t get to see any of the town straight away. The next morning we went on a day trip to Nurnburg. We had perfect weather, probably the hottest day we’ve had on our trip! Nurnburg is surrounded by a restored medieval Alstadt (old town surrounded by a wall). The old town with it’s squares, cathedrals and rivers/canals is really pretty. We went into a couple of cathedrals - definitely the coolest places to be on a hot day! We had a ... read more

On our last full day in Prague we gave our legs a rest and hired a car to get out to Cesky Krumlov, a few hours south of Prague. Richie chauffeured his 4 lovely ladies in the dodgiest hire car we had come across - a tiny Skoda (too small for 5 of us) without hub caps and which developed a strange noise later in the day... On the drive down we took a punt and followed a brown tourist sign which brought us to Castle Zvikov. which overlooks a gorgeous lake. We couldn’t actually go inside the castle as it was being used for a film set but we enjoyed wandering around the grounds. We all loved Cesky Krumlov with it’s beautiful buildings, river and castle. Thanks for the recommendation Tyson! It is a real ... read more

The train ride from Berlin started out to be a nightmare! There were tonnes of people waiting on the platform and when it arrived we all packed in like sardines. From the outside we had no idea what carriage we were getting into and had to squeeze through 4 carriages past lots of luggage and people without seat reservations to get to ours. It was really hectic and there was lots of shoving going on. We thought we were in Bombay rather than Europe! The 5 euro to reserve seats is definitely worth it! Once we finally got seats though it turned out to be a really pretty ride through the countryside and along rivers, lots of which were flooded. When we arrived we had a wander around the city and checked out the Charles ... read more

From Hannover we took the train to Berlin. We had originally planned on spending only 3 nights in Berlin but after 3 rainy days of exploring we decided to make it 4 so we could fit in some more sightseeing and hopefully see the city in some sunshine! On the night we arrived we stumbled across a really cool grungy gallery area. At first it looked like a junkyard or squat but on closer inspection it turned out to be an area where different artists hung out and displayed their work from huge metal sculptures to paintings. Very cool! The next morning we did a walking tour. It was the first day of summer and it was 10 degrees! No fair! In the 3.5 hour tour we saw heaps of sights including the Brandenburger Tor, remnants ... read more

When we arrived in Hannover and left the train station we thought we were going a bit crazy because we could hear strange echoey music and it sounded like it was coming out the drains. We later figured out that radio music was coming out of vents/speakers within the light poles. Very weird! After we dumped our bags and headed out for a walk. It started absolutely POURING down! Luckily we stumbled upon a fete which was just packing up but the beer and food stands were still open. Huddling under the beer stand was the perfect setting for our first German sausage and beer! We were introduced to currywurst and have since become great friends! It’s a bratwurst with curry powder and tomato sauce - yum! When the rain eased we had a wander around ... read more
