Today I chased after sheep....only to receive angry "Baas" of irritation from the sheep as they fled from me and my camera. My plan to kidnap a sheep met with an epic failure today. I do think a sheep would be a perfect pet. I could let it out in our yard to eat the grass - thus eliminating the need for a lawn service. And, it could produce yarn for me! We spent most of the day driving around the Dingle Peninsula/Sleahead. Definitely a more traditional part of the country - and most road signs were printed in Gaelic only (I learned that Go MALL means "Go Slow"). Although the driving and navigation is becoming much easier, I am still getting rather tired of driving. I keep trying to convince mom to see the rest ... read more

“Top of the mornin’ to you” our hostess said as she breezed through the breakfast room and I knew without a doubt we were in Ireland. Actually we had heard no one really says “Top of the mornin’” anymore so we were grinning at each other to actually hear it said in a real Irish brogue. John and I arrived in Ireland on May 7 and spent the next week exploring the sights of Dublin and generally taking it easy (I will write about Dublin in a later blog). After the week, our friends Vicky and Gary arrived and the four of us set out to explore the country. We left Dublin immediately because Queen Elizabeth II was due to visit and they were closing streets and sights in preparation. We headed south out of Dublin ... read more

The first week of our trip was over, and Brian had to go home. We walked him to the bus stop in Galway, and bid our campanion slán agus sábháilte turas (farewell and safe journey)! Then Geoff and I drove to the Dingle Peninsula, in County Kerry. The drive took most of the day and by the time we checked into our B&B that night we were tired and hungry. Had a great time at the local pub where many townsfolk were playing music and singing songs...met some visitors from the states as well (Flint Michigan, of all places). The next day we explored the Dingle Peninsula. This is the southwestern most peninsula in Ireland and quite beautiful. We drove to Dingle by way of the Connor Pass. This is a very tall (very dangerous in ... read more

Friday, October 15: Checked out of the Rockcrest B&B this morning and drove into Kenmare for a stroll around the village centre on another beautiful sunny day. Ran into Patrick, whom we met in Kinsale two nights ago, as he was doing some shopping. Found an ATM for yet more cash and we were ready to hit the Ring of Kerry. Kenmare is the southeastern kickoff point for the Ring. We drove past the Staigue Fort, a glacier lake left 10,000 years ago, and Carroll Cove (a beautiful beach with the warmest water in Ireland). We stopped at The Blind Piper pub in Caherdaniel for a lunch of grilled ham and cheese sandwich. The bartender told us that years ago many disabled people became musicians as a way to support themselves. The real Blind Piper passed ... read more

Sliante! Sadness is sweeping over us. Our love affair with Ireland is coming to an end. We have two more days in this stunning land. Our tour has been awesome. The people have been really great. They have been so great that we have become zombies because of the lack of sleep. We have been around the entire coast line. The scenery can not be described, truly amazing. We had some amazing days at the Blarney Castle and Kinsale. Our livers can not handle the Irish custom of drinking. Apparently, they don't discriminate on what day to drink... and as we were told, Sunday is a part of the week-end. The people are amazingly friendly, and outstandingly witty. Our tour guide, Joseph, is hilarious. Ohhh, and according to one American... He had Shannon figured out to ... read more

While working at the O'Connors we thought we'd use our weekend to do a little bit of sightseeing while we were in the area. We had heard that Dingle, a seaside town on the Western most tip of Ireland was a good spot to visit, so off we went! World Cup fever could be found everywhere and Ireland (while sorely disappointed about losing the qualifying match against France) was in full swing. We were all keen to see Germany vs. Argentina and headed into a local pub to catch the second half as soon as we arrived. We settled into a cosy spot and it soon became apparent that there were some fervent Germany supporters, so we cheered alongside them, particularly when Germany ended up winning 4 goals to none. As Dingle is a pretty popular ... read more

I'm nearing the three week mark of my travels & to say it has flown by would just be too obvious. I've been in Ireland now for two weeks and I could go on about how beautiful the scenery is and how great the people are, but again - too obvious, instead I'll share with you a tale which for me will be a long time in forgetting. Last week we were cycling through West Cork and Kerry, whilst in Cork we stayed in a lovely little village called Glengariff, after dinner we all headed out to hear some 'trad' (traditional Irish music). We crammed into a tiny old pub and sat down to listen two English musicians - despite their nationality, they played this traditional music really well :0). Just as darkness was descending (approx ... read more

before i start, funny thing: i came home to find most of my family celebrating patty's day without me in ventura ahah with wacky costumes and crazy disguises!!! i am actually going to include those pics cause i think they are SO amazing and absolutely need to be shared!! now about the weekend (this might get long and boring- i apologize ahead of time): I'm not quite sure what the region was but we stayed in Caherciveen. Funny the ring of kerry is nothing close to a ring, which granted im not that thick or american to think that is what we were going to see, but it is actually a loop of tourist attractions. Apparently, (this is what we were told) people save up their whole lives just to come see the sights we saw ... read more

FUN few days as we headed to the Dingle Peninsula. Definently the prettiest part of Ireland I have seen. By this stage Rita and I were well and truly into a routine and use to each other 24/7. It took a while to drive to the Peninsula but the coast line is very untouched and filled with sheep and farms. We arrived after dark and settled into our very cool Hostel. Probably the best one we stayed at all week. They were quick to recommend a place to eat and have a few drinks. The beds were soooooooo comfortable that I headed straight for my usual afternoon nap and struggled to wake up 2 hours later, but we only had one night so we were up and joined every single tourist staying in the town at ... read more
