July 12, 2008 Galway, Ireland The internet "dongle" is working! What you might ask is a "dongle"? It is a broadband connection that we purchased in England and sometimes it works and sometimes...NO. When it works.... we try to get emails and blogs going. The Internet Cafe system gets old... quick. So for a while this morning we are trying to catch up on news. Getting into Galway, once you know the roads, is easy, so off we go. It is Saturday and a farmers market is bustling. This is Ireland, so it is raining again, and we decide to go to the Spanish Arch...built in 1584 to protect the harbor; it was here the Spanish traders unloaded their ships. It is next to the "free" Galway Museum (this is the first thing "free" in Ireland ... read more

Hey everyone! I just had my first week of classes and so far so good, I am learning a great deal about the troubles of Ireland’s long past. Last Friday we went out to Connemara and County Mayo, and saw a great deal of sheep/cows and the only fjord in Ireland. It was absolutely breath-taking, the mountains and hills everywhere, and of course tons and tons of green! I still can’t believe how quickly the weather changes here, there really is no point of a weather channel, I swear. One second it is raining, the next it is sunny, then another second it is sunny but misting, all happening within a minute. But in general I think we have been quite lucky with having more sunny weather than rain and have stayed around 65. Last Friday ... read more

Day 2: What a wonderful night of sleep! We slept way over our usual 7-8 hours, and it was well needed. Our morning started with trying to figure out how to work the shower (speed and temp) and then a wonderful breakfast prepared by Mary and Roddy (the B&B owners- we remembered their names by thinking of the inlaws from my big fat greek weddidng. After breakfast it was back into the car for an hours drive, on a more stable road without as many rock walls towards rosseval- the location of the ferry which would take us to the aran islands. We arrived about 30 minutes before the ferry left and decided, since we can still pass for it, to try for the student rate, which we were granted and which saved us 10 euros (yeah!!) ... read more

Today was the first day of classes and the past four days have been a great deal of fun and great to settle in and get to know the City of Galway better. So far I am liking Galway a great deal more than Dublin, it has the hustle and bustle of a city with plenty of stone covered streets to walk on with many shops and pubs to check out. Yesterday a couple of girls in the program and I headed down to the coast, north of Claddagh and though I saw many little kids and families swimming (it was probably 65 degrees!) I could only go and touch it, simply to be able to say that I touched the Atlantic from both sides. It was quite windy but absolutely beautiful, it was perfectly clear ... read more

Cliffs of Muher & Rock of Cashel Ok, so i remember someone telling me before that it is cold and rains in Ireland even during the summer. At first i think i was a little nieve and thought i would get lucky and get the good weather of the year.... I was wrong. It rained everyday, most of the day, expect at night it seem to get nicer out between 8 pm and 11 pm. I know I said 11 pm. Mostly the rain was just a constant drizzle but it was kindof annoying. I would recommend bringing a umbrella or poncho no matter what. By the way. Cliffs of Moher are incridible to see but i do warn you dont plan to spend much time. It takes about 20-30 and you've seen it all. And ... read more

I am finally in Galway and at the National University of Ireland, and it definitely a gorgeous campus, it cannot compare to any of the universities in the U.S. Two days ago we went to Powers Court and Glendelough which was absolutely gorgeous!!! It was probably the most perfect day, 75 degrees and sunny. It only misted for a couple of minutes which was refreshing. I took pictures on a disposable camera so eventually I will be able to post them. Yesterday we went to Strokestown and the famine museum then off to Galway, it was pretty rainy so it was kind of difficult to truly enjoy, but then again it has rained everyday here. Thankfully someone must have accidentally picked up my jacket that had my camera in then pocket at the pub I was ... read more

Mum and I decided to sleep in rather than catch the early train so we had a leisurely breakfast and then after breakfast I went to go buy a bag that I really liked before we headed to the train station. Unfortunately I was a bit too optimistic about how easy it would be to do this. Nothing seemed to go right. First I didn´t take an umbrella (Big mistake!!) and then I got there 20 minutes before the shopping centre opened and then the sales girl of the particular shop I wanted arrived 15 mins late. I finally got the bag and then had to rush back in the pouring rain to meet mum at the hotel in time so that we didn´t miss the train (because they only came every 2 hours and it ... read more

Alright so where am I up to? Two days ago I arrived in Kilkenny, a lovely little town in the South East of Ireland possibly well known for having the same name as Guinness' lighter draught beer - but of course, when in Ireland, everyone just drinks Guinness anyway! Speaking of drinks, The Irish's favourite three drinks just happen to be my three favourite too!! Guinness, Milk and Lucozade - Seriously, if its not Black, White, or Orange - It just has no place here in the Emerald Isle. Anyway, of course when I arrived in Kilkenny, its was raining so much that had the rain fell in Melbourne, Stage 3A would be a thing of the past. I wandered across the street to lovely little pub called the Pumphouse after dinner to take in some ... read more
