I went to Galway last Sunday (20 July) for the day. It was beautiful--I went with my friend Erica and we decided that it was a place we just had to see before returning to America. Why? Well, other than the Galway girl song which EVERYBODY loves (well, I like it) 'And er hair was black and er eyes were bluee' everybody in Ireland says Galway is a great place to go outside of Dublin. It's the 'San Francisco' of Ireland. I can see the similarities...they are both west coast cities with an alternative edge...boho, if you will. Just like San Francisco, Galway is trendy and pretty upscale & therefore pricey---obviously not the extent that San Fran is, but still noticible. The buildings are colorful and there are a ton of pubs and music being played ... read more

We arrived in Galway on Wednesday and it's been great so far. Maybe my favourite Irish city yet. We spent yesterday walking around the city and seeing a few sights. Galway is quite small for a major city, but it's got great atmosphere. We're staying right in the heart of town and everything is within easy walking distance. The Galway Arts Festival has been on for the past two weeks and ends tomorrow. It's really a good time to be here. There are street performers all along the major streets, and yesterday we went to a photography exhibition at NUIG (National University of Ireland - Galway). The highlight for me was seeing 'Translations' last night, an Irish play about being colonized by the English and the effects on language and Irish names. It was set in ... read more

We started off the morning with a breakfast and a gorgeous view out of the front window of the Stonecroft B&B. The breakfast was not as good as we have had in the past few days, but it was a start. I am not sure but I think the breakfast didn’t taste as well because my stomach was upset from sleeping the entire night while inhaling the smell of old pee. I believe that the person who had the room before me must have had a great night at the pub and then missed the toilet completely. After a little fussing around to try to get the blog updated, our first stop was at W.B. Yeats grave in DrumCliffe, just a few miles from our B&B. Yeats was buried outside of the small church that his ... read more

Hello from Galway, Ireland!! I've been here for two nights already and decided to stay for another, just because it's so great here! Yesterday I took a bus tour to the Cliffs of Moher, which was Gorgeous!!! I still haven't figured out how to put my pictures up but as soon as I figure it out, they will be up! I got to learn a lot about the history of Ireland and actually found the tour really interesting. It's still gray and gloomy here, but everyone is so nice and I'm enjoying myself so much that the weather doesn't really even matter. Bank of America shut off my credit card for two days, so that was a boat load of fun to take care of but I finally figured it out... after a wasted 25 euro ... read more

Inhale deeply Breeze blowing through my skin. Let it out. A moment to reflect within. A stranger's smile A road unknown. A moment where I feel alone. Welcoming handshakes, exchange of names. Two separate worlds - for a moment the same. Some will stay others will part. A moment where a friendship starts. A stranger's kiss Two hands as one A moment ended with the morning sun A glance at new landscapes A new patch of sky Each, a moment - diminished with time Some lasting memories some quickly fade No promise of tomorrow. A moment just for today. Memories unexpected of places gone and people met Always a moment - to never forget. -written by me Inspired by an Irish guy I met in Dublin who said he would not meet me in France even ... read more

I just arrived in Galway, Ireland. It was a very long 4 hour bus ride to get here, but the scenery was beautiful and I like this town already. It's what you would picture a small Irish town to be like. There was live music in the square and a lot of people just hanging out on the grass listening. Definately my kind of scene. After I checked into my hostel, I headed down and hung out for a bit, it was nice to relax and the weather is gorgeous today! Still a little cool but at least there is sun!! Tonight there is a parade on the main st. at 10:00 p.m so i think some of the girls in my hostel and I are going to head down, it seems like it's going to ... read more

We arrived on the Emerland Isle on Sunday night. After a few flight delays we were wondering if we were going to get here, but we did. No overnights in the airport like last year! We took a bus to Galway on Monday and belive we have landed at one of the most festive places in Ireland! If it wasnt obvious by our huge GREEN plane with a countdown to St. Pat's day, then it was here in Galway. That was very evident to us last night as we were sitting in an Irish pub listening to an awesome Irish band and watching people much more coordinated than us jumping up to do some Irish dancing. So much fun!! We wish Erin was here to show us how to do the jig! The street we are ... read more

July 13, 2008 Galway to Connemara to Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland Oscar Wilde described Connemara as a "savage beauty", and its patchwork of lakes, rugged mountains and windswept bogs certainly give a sense of splendid isolation. Ireland, but especially NW Ireland is a fisherman's delight. This is for you Dave Geis, you would love the fishing... the lakes, the rivers and the ocean fishing is incredible...from trout to salmon and many others in between. Irish is the everyday language in this area, folks send their children here to learn Irish (Gaelic) in the summer. Many signs are only in Irish. This is July 13 and we are wearing fleece and raincoats as we approach the Connemara National Park, and we are chilly. Because of the rain and fog, the rangers asked that we not hike to ... read more
