Hey all! Today we went on a day trip with Galway Tour Company. We were a little afraid because it was raining, but it ended up being alright. A bus picked us up around 10 AM and we drove to the county of Mayo, yes like the condiment, where we stopped at Ross Errily Friary, ruins of a friary that has been around since the 14th century. Great place to take photos and walk around, it almost felt like a little maze. Good fun. We drove past a stone circle and a fairy tree, where locals believe the fairies come out at night and play music and dance. Local legend tells that if you visit the tree at night, the fairies will freeze you in your spot until morning. They really believe that stuff here...Ireland is ... read more

A jam-packed day with plenty of driving today. We set out early to the southwest headed for County Galway. We decided it was worth the two hours to check out what seems to be the favorite spot in all of Ireland for many. We learned that Brian Og O'Rourke had been buried in a Ross Errilly Firary, about 30 km north of the city of Galway. This great warrior requested burial here (after he being mortally wounded in The Nine Years War) in what has been the most well-preserved of the abbeys and friaries we have visited. Some pretty amazing stuff, including a large tank in which they held their live catch of fish until they were ready to cook it up. It seems nobody knows exactly where Brian's body is buried, but one of the ... read more

We took the ferry to Inishneer the smallest of the Aran Islands for a night and most of a day. Lots and lots of rock walls and a beautiful rocky coast line. We got there in time for a sunset and the last bowls of soup at the local pub. In the morning we got up for the sunrise at the castle ruins and later we wandered along the shore sitting out at least one of the showers in the ship wreck ruins featured in the introduction to "Father Ted". I recommend "Father Ted" if you are in the mood for some great Irish humor. It was a relaxing day, even if we never completely dried out.... read more

HELLO! we have left the uk! finally get to use euros woo. well it has been ages, internet suddenly got epically expensive but at this hostel its free, AMAZING haha. we are meant to be using the time to try and get some planning done for scandinavia (arriving in under a week, so excited!) but procrastinating and photo sharing is way funner obviously. guess will try and do a catch up? we last wrote in liverpool, which is way too many cities ago for much detail....we saw a museum and a gallery, hung out with our couchsurfing host, cooked a real dinner in his kitchen, and played with the SUPERLAMBANANAS. our favourite part of liverpool, it is europes culture city or something for 2008 and to celebrate there are these weird statues all over the place, ... read more

(Yes I know we are the same people who broke a 10 year drought in Sydney). Also I heard it was the wettest August in 8 years in Ireland and that's saying something but it was around 17degrees so that's better than raining & freezing. Not that stopped us having our first beautiful Guinness in a year (well for me anyway) in Tigh Neachtains Quay Street, shopping in Galways 'eclectic' clothes shops and ... read more

Galway ended up being our home base for our time in Ireland. The original plan was to spend most of the first five days in Galway and then have a little more than a week to travel. However the cancellation of the wedding (the reason for the timing of the trip) caused us to re-arrange the trip to be able to be around and fit Fran's friends' schedules which had just had a life altering event. This included two day trips to Connemara for hiking. One was a typical combination of rain, mist and a little sun and the second was a constant down pour and a poorly marked trail. The second turned into a lunch and tea (or anything hot) at the only local pub around. They didn't mind that we tried to dry out ... read more

The Galway races are one of the premier annual events in Ireland, and it's fortunate my visit coincides with the week long festival taking place in this city on the west coast of Ireland. The fillies are out for a canter on the streets, with several dutifully escorted by dapper gents. Everyone in town looks a million bucks, er ... except me that is, but nevertheless I'm happy to join in the fun. The actual racing is comprised solely of hurdling, and Irish stayers are world renowned jumpers. I was fortunate to be in the pub on thursday to watch the biggest race of the week over a pint of guinness. The last journal left off, dear reader, at the conclusion of our weekend away in Belgium. My dear friend and I returned to Paris, and ... read more

Ganhei 50 euros. Nada mal, né? Havia muita gente, porque as corridas de Galway (Galway Races) estão acontecendo nesse momento. Gente do mundo ... read more

Salutations everyone, I am in Galway, home of the "Galway Races" (horse-racing). I love Galway and Galway loves me. So much in fact that I managed to make 25 Euro in 45 minutes busking on Merchant street, or the Bourbon street of Ireland.. Some of you have been here but for those that haven't (that being most of you), I will do my best to capture it in a few sentences. You're more likely to hear French, German, or Spanish in downtown Galway than you will English. There are literally tourists everywhere, and many of those foriegn accents belong to former tourists who decided they liked the place so much that they would just stay. In the past 24 hours on this strip of pubs and shops I've seen fire-dancers, emo-rockers, this British jester-type who tricks ... read more
