Day 31- Tuesday Yesterday, as I hope you all have noticed, I finally managed to add the photos because I finally found myself in an up to date internet shop with appropriate connections. So no message, just a backlog of photos, most with rather trite captions as I was in a hurry. As an aside...another trap for novices...we had booked our very nice and highly convenient hotel at the base of the Acropolis from the tourist agent at Athens airport and paid with a voucher. 85 euros! which we thought was expensive but couldn't be helped. We were so pleased with the convenient location we stayed another night. When we went to pay they said the price at the hotel was 110 euros! Last night we took the train from the station just near our hotel ... read more

Mike, the owner of Ios Resort was waiting at the port to pick us up and gave us a quick tour of the main strip before taking us to the hotel. It's 2.5km from the port to the town and then 2.5km from the town to the beach, all on the same road. The hotel itself was only a 5 minute walk from town which is another one of those Greek island towns that sits on the side of a steep hill. Once you get into the right part of town it is all bar and clubs, all of which are not much bigger then the average family room back home. The whole island is full of tourists, mainly Australians, all under 25. It was very rare that we got served by anyone other then Aussies, ... read more

After reading up on what islands had what to offer and where they were located the best and most interesting plan led to Santorini (Also known as Thira one of the more southern most islands towards Crete) The camper was to be left on Santorini, Packing up the night before and leaving the van at old port meant we slept the night there and woke up the next morning with enough time to walk around 2miles north east to the new port in order to board the ferry for Naxos. Naxos was similar to Santorini just bigger and a lot more laid back (not the party scene and less tourists) After Santorini we dropped off at the port of Santorini. This was quite different as there was nothing more than a bunch of very small tour/ferry ... read more

After 8 hours of boating torture we finally arrived at Santorini more then happy to be getting back to dry land. A short cab ride and we were soon at the hotel, Ira Studios No2 (Nikita's Appts). From the outside it looked beautiful but Nikita, although a lovely guy has falen a little behind on the maintenance of late. Still, it was great just to have a bed and warmish shower at that point. The rest of our group arrived throughtout the day, including Shain and Kim who it was great to see after 18 months abroad. That night 6 of us, Luke, Shain, Kim, Stu, Katie and myself had a small reunion meal before Tim turned up to take us out to Bob's Bar where the rest of the group had been drinking. As it ... read more

Happy Birthday to Me! Thank you to all of you who sent me birthday wishes on Sunday! It’s been a pretty cool celebration for me this year since not only am I celebrating it with Kels in Greece, but we also had Reed and Sarah here visiting us for four days! They arrived last Tuesday and we had an awesome time! The afternoon they arrived Kelsey surprised me with CAESARS!!! Yup that’s right…Vodka, Clamato, Worcestershire, Tabasco, Celery Salt, Limes, and fresh celery…in Rhodes! Fantastic! Thanks to Tiff who brought everything from Canada last month! What a treat! That night we had dinner at Megan’s restaurant and I enjoyed my Caesars with a great Indian dinner. Then we had a few drinks in an “alley bar” in the old town of Rhodes, and then headed into the ... read more

We arrived at the very modern (thanks to the 2004 olympics) Athens international airport around lunchtime, and waited an hour fr the train to athens. We went out immediately to the centre of the tourist area (Monostaraki) looking for cheap food, and didn't find it. We kept looking, and eventually gave up and had expensive food. We had greek salad, potato salad and bread from a little cafe on Monostaraki. It was very good, and set off an unprecedented run of greek salads (we had one every night that we were in Greece). After our meal, we headed to the ruins of the ancient agora (town centre), then way up to the acropolis, which was very cool. I could just imagine Socrates kicking up the dust with his little brown sandals. That night we took the ... read more

Santorini, Thira, Stroggili, or Santa Irini, are many different names for the same beautiful island I visited with my wife for our honeymoon. After reading hundrends of reviews regarding Santorini island I concluded that this was the right choice for our Honeymoon. The next step as you can understand was to book the flight tickets and one of the nicest hotel possible. The first part was easy, since two greek airline companies had about twice everyday direct flights from Athens to Santorini airport. But, the second part.. yes, how to choose the right hotel among hundrends one? Therefore, I started searching hotels with 5 and 4 stars rating. Guess what? There were still around one hundrend hotels on my list. I found out that there were 3 regions, which are less crowded so as to enjoy ... read more

Napoli was a dirty crazy city. Totally run by the Mafia. Its dirty coz no one picks up the rubbish. Word is the Mafia used to run it, but they got kicked out. So now no one wants to do it, because that would be stepping on the mafia's turf, and that's not conducive to living a long life. The EU contributed about 20 million euros to helping the city's rubbish problem... which promptly disappeared. So now the garbage from the markets that overtake the main street (north africans selling fake Gucci which is mafia produced) out the front of where we were staying just flies around the plaza all day in the hot breeze. Some big street sweeper drives around at about midnight, and by morning 2/3 of it is gone. Then it all starts ... read more
