The Medieval town of Rhodes is located in the NE side of the island and is surrounded by a brick wall that use to protect the old city from the invaders. Now it is dedicated to commerce and tourism but the site is very interesting. The Medieval castle and the three windmills are the most important landmarks.... read more

Beautiful beaches, great atmosphere, stunning scenery. All things we thought we were heading to. We got the ferry from Athens to Santorini. Slept on the deck which was great at the start, novelty factor. But by the middle of the night we were quite cold. The ferry stopped at almost every possilbe stop on the way. It took us 16 hours!!! Which didnt bother us at the time because we just thought about the beach! We got to Santorini at 6 or 7am and found a guy with a sign for Perissa Beach where we knew we had accommodation for the following 3 nights. The guy who drove us was a bit of a character, pointing out all the wineries on the way. Despite the wineries there is practically no trees and no greenery on Santorini. ... read more

The nymph Symi mated with Poseidon, the god of the seas and gave birth to Hthonios who became the first leader of the island. Glayos was the first inhabitant, good swimmer and sailor that tought his habilities to the every one. The Island sent 3 ships to the Trojan war in Homer's "Iliad". In 1309 was conquered by the knights of St. John followed by a period of prosperity where shipping, sponge diving and boat building flourish. Symi was conquered by the Turks in 1522 but had privileges like freedom of religious expression and speech. In 1912 was occupied by Italy, In 1944 the English took over and the region was bombarded and destroyed. In 1945 they surrender to the Germans and 1948 became Greek as it is today. The Island is rich in music festivals ... read more

Day 34 When you have heard high praise about certain places all your life it is difficult to describe your first response. You actually feel ashamed to have to resort to cliches and superlatives as though you are the first person to have ever been there. The Greek islands are just like that. Amazing! I asked the owner of the delightful restaurant where we dined this evening about the holidaying Greeks who are everywhere, and he explained that most of them are Athenians . He realised that we are from Australia- assumed Melbourne, as it is the second largest Greek population in the world after Athens. He has cousins from Canada who are here at present. And his charming wife is actually from Germany- has been here for 11 years. They have a three year old ... read more

Day 33 After three delightful days on Paros, our time came today to move on. We took the noon ferry to Naxos, only about 45 minutes away, round the other side of the island. Quite a different atmosphere. A bigger island, with more of a "town" like feel. The main town seems to have developed round a medieval Venetian castle. Many more boats at the marina, including private yachts and smaller cruise ships at anchor, all interspersed amongst local fishing boats. Our island hopping package had given us vouchers for a delightful small hotel. A driver in a van met us and took us there along with four US uni students here on an internship for "animal studies" - ie pre-vet science. We have come across quite a few US students on summer school credits. On ... read more

Day 32 Another restful day on Paros. We seem to be somewhat out of step with others on the island. There is a major siesta from about 2.30 to 5.30 each day when nearly everything closes. Then everyone comes out refreshed to promenade and talk and eat until midnight (we are told) . Yesterday we had a rest but did not sleep so we went to bed at 10 and didn't wake up till the church bells woke us at 7.30am. This morning we set off early by bus to travel about 10 kilometers across the mountain in the centre of the island to Lefkes, a samll town which was the Ottoman capital of the island. It is in an excellent location at the head of a valley so occupants could see any invasion coming. It ... read more

Greeting from Sunny Paros in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. Absolute paradise as you can see. We took an over night ferry and will be here in Paros exploring the historic back streets, eating seafood at cafes, swimming in the warm seas and relaxing. I loved Asia, but the Greek Isles are paradise!... read more
