Sunday 19th September 2010 After leaving Kythnos, we had to motor for about 4 hours to get to Syros as there was no wind. After a walk in Syros, we found a cafe with a good wifi connection so we returned there so Judy could connect to answer queries from her uni students. As it was very pleasant we enjoyed a beer and were joined by Ian and Jen. Judy also had time to download the next lot of assessments which she can mark on the boat. Dinner was at a another cafe we had found earlier in the day, some of the customers leaning out of the alfresco area to tell us how good it was. We were a little concerned at first at the quality of the food when we found they had a ... read more

SYROS - oh dear, this is going to be short and uninteresting.... apart from the 2 funny stories. So, we arrived to the normal group of room touts. Well, I guess sometimes you get it right, and sometimes you get it wrong...... oh, so very wrong. Hey, its pot luck!!! So this very nice guy, told me about his rooms, nice area, balcony, sea view, fridge, twin beds. 25 Euros. Sounded about right. So we agreed, and walked ( walked!!!! that was a first... although Syros is built on steps mostly, although there is car access), through the streets to his place. As the street changed to back alley, I looked at John and said I wasnt going to like it. But, you gotta stay positive havent you. Havent you?? Well, the room, in a word... ... read more

On the early morning hours of day 4, we took a ferry on the deep blue Aegean Sea to our first island.. Syros was chosen because we wanted one of the 2 islands we picked not to be too touristy, and our Greek friend George suggested it. As we approached the island from the ferry we could see the relatively small capital town of Hermoupolis set on a hill. What cached my eyes immediately were two big churches: the catholic St George Cathedral with the blue dome on top of the hill, and the Byzantine Orthodox Church of Anastasis on the middle of the hill. Off the ferry, the first thing we did was to get lost trying to find our way to the hotel in the intertwined maze of narrow crooked streets going up ... read more

Location: Syros Island (Cyclades Islands) Weather: Sunny, northerly wind. 33 °C I've decided to record the weather each day, just to rub it in how I'm now experiencing summer! We arrived on Syros at 11pm on Friday night, Hermoupolis was very busy this late at night - this weekend was the Festival for the Virgin Mary so it is a public holiday and there have been lots of celebrations; music and fireworks. It is also the middle of the summer holidays, Syros is one of the holiday hotspot for Athenians so the town is fairly busy all summer. It also helps being only 4 hours by Ferry from Piraeus, the ferry was very crowded as lots of people were going to the next Island after Syros, - Mykonos! Everyone is out at night enjoying the night ... read more

DAY 84 SAILING DAY 12 Bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning. Francine and Yvonne head off to the super market for some fresh produce. First, stopping to have a coffee with Bill. The super market is at the back of the town and they got lost on the way. A lovely Greek lady helps them with directions. Finally they make it back to the boat. All ready to set sail and off we go on our way to Syros, about a 5 hour trip. There is a nice wind and today we get to sail for a few hours. This morning Angie is at the helm and gets a lesson in sailing with the sails. So the routine commences. Sailing, siesta and eating. We arrive in Syros at about 4pm. This town looks very much ... read more

Last weekend my friends and I stayed in Athens and enjoyed some of the Carnival festivals going on here. We first attempted to partake in the Burned Meat Thursday festival but were unsuccessful in finding a taverna. We still ate meat, just in the form of gyros instead. Then on Saturday night we went to a parade. After the parade we got crepes. This was a wonderful experience because the waitress was absolutely phenomenal! First she was impressed that we capable of reading Greek (though it was very slow and we didn't understand most of it). She was happy to help translate what was on the menu for us. Then she asked us if we were from the North... as in from Scandinavia! It was great, she was so helpful and kind! Then on Sunday my ... read more
