Where there is love there is no darkness… ~ Greek Proverb HE SAID... Today we were exploring the beautiful island of Syros. We woke early to a strong sea breeze buffeting the township of Ermoupoli. The collapsible table and chairs on our small balcony were bearing the brunt of the gusts, so I brought them inside the room. I grabbed a takeaway tea and coffee from the cafe next to our hotel, and the staff was very friendly. They didn’t speak English, but they understood my order. They seemed bemused by my request for a takeaway tea, and had to go in search of a teabag. Coffee is evidently far more popular for Syriots as an early morning beverage. We had a clear objective for the day ahead. We wanted to explore Ano Syros and Vrondado, ... read more

A kiss must last long to be enjoyed… ~ Greek Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling southeast from Athens to Syros– by ferry. There are ‘early’ starts, and there are ‘very early’ starts. This was one of the latter. When we woke at 4am, it was way too early for breakfast, so we picked up a pre-prepared breakfast box from the friendly Hotel Attalos staff and made our way to the underground metro (a short walk from the hotel). We boarded a train, found a place to stand, dropped our packs at our feet and headed to Piraeus – the main port of Athens. It wasn’t long before we were storing our packs in the cavernous bowel of an enormous ferry and finding a spot upstairs to settle for the four-hour trip to Syros. We ... read more

We left Itea at 6:55 AM on September 25th with 2’ waves and clear skies as we were headed to the Corinth Canal today. You must call the canal authorities when you are near the entrance in order to find out when you will be given permission to go through the canal. This is due to the fact that there is only one way traffic allowed. With not knowing how long we would have to wait for permission we wanted to leave early enough to give ourselves a buffer of time to make the passage as well as find an anchorage for the night once we were through the canal. We had an uneventful trip to the canal entrance, although it was a little bit “rocky” as the waves continued to build and they seemed to ... read more

It is all so exciting at the ferry terminal as we prepare to board - gigantic trucks, cars, motorcycles, travelers disembarking and boarding, young and old, enormous steel planks and ropes, pallets of freight, fruit vendors with overflowing baskets, the Greek cleric with his black robe and hat, the young woman alone checking her cell phone - commerce, pleasure travel, excited voices and escalators - taking all of us on as we cast off for the island of Syros for the best moussaka and sunset ever.... read more

I had no idea how great Syros was going to be. Definitely would've stayed the weekend if I had known. After nine hours on the outside deck of a Greek ferry I was sun weary and had already seen a lot of islands. However, the harbor I found myself pulling into was the most appealing yet. One building I was particularly drawn to was this magnificent blue domed church. It felt like it belonged on the mainland of Old Europe, not some tiny far flung island. I disembarked from the ferry, and tried to walk off to find my hotel. No luck, so I circled back to the quay and hopped in a taxi. Upon arrival I got the most enthusiastic welcome I have ever gotten from a hotel receptionist. Hearing the taxi door shut she ... read more

Mikonos'tan bizim sahillere direkt sefer yok . Syros'a gitmeğe mecbursunuz.. Gece 23:10 'a kadar burada... read more

After a great night's sleep we're ready for a day on Sea Cloud which has been sailing all night to the island of Syros where we'll dock but there are no excursions planned. For those of you who know Toni's problem with sea sickness, you're probably curious how things are going for her . . . GREAT. She put the patch at noon on Thursday and she's been fine ever since. We haven't really had much rolling until this morning where the wind was quite fresh and still she's doing great. Toni meets Bobbi for the morning exercise class on the foredeck while I catch up on some paper work for this blog. If you've been following along (and thank you for doing so) you'll figure out that the blog is now being updated sort sporadically ... read more

Thursday 9th June 2011 We went out for our evening stroll at 8 o'clock and wandered back to the harbour area. There was a warehouse outlet on the way that we popped into and bought some new shorts for me. We worked our way up to the main square and had a drink in a cafe called Quick, sitting watching the kids running all over the place and the traffic doing lots of silly things, some things don't change. We weren't that hungry and decided on a croissant back at our current favourite cafe Coffeeright and returned to the room at 11 o'clock. Friday 10 June, 2011 I slept late today and the clock said 1020 when I finally stirred. We had been talking about our next move and had seen that there were ferries to ... read more

Thursday 9th June, 2011 We left the room at 1040 and went for a stroll around the town. We stopped at the Coffeeright cafe to have some coffee and croissants for our breakfast while watching the Blue Star Ithakis make it's morning visit. Then all the way around to the end of the harbour wall looking at the long row of similar yachts as we went along. we have assumed that they are charter yachts. Then the long hike up and up and up to Ano Syros, the Roman Catholic church overlooking the entire town. The weather was overcast to start with but very humid and hot. The sky cleared as we went along and we certainly sweated some climbing up. Lovely view from the top looking all over the town. Then back down and as ... read more

Tuesday 7th June 2011 We left the apartment at 7 o'clock and went to the Point cafe just across the road. We had a drink and did some blogging and surfing then ordered some food. Pat had the Special #1 and I had the special #2. Special # 1 was Greek salad and fresh fish and chips with a glass of wine, Special #2 was Greek Salad, Tzatsiki, kebab, pitta bread and a glass of wine both at €10. We both enjoyed our meals and thought it good value. We are near the bus station at the top end of Mykonos and as Pat has said eating anywhere near a bus station turns out to be very good value from our recent experiences on several different islands. This cafe is also a good place to watch ... read more
