Drove into town. Veria. Stopped by Demetri’s shop, “Ethnic Arts.” Cool stuff. Awesome clothes (for tiny people) and textiles from Nepal or places around there. Greece has really awesome clothes for women, tiny women, but I love the styles. Nothing I can wear. After a big sigh and a second of pouting, I was over it. I focused on items that were manufactured for other things -- home and personal accessories. That was fun. All of us spent some time in the shop -- some spent time and money, but who and what escapes me now. The drum was set up in front of the shop. We sang and distributed fliers for the coming weekend’s event. Moving to the central square, Mariah and I oogled over the fabulous shoes and ladies fashions that are popular ... read more

We find out that although labeled as a pow wow, this event is not what we consider a pow wow. So, I’ll call it a “cultural festival.” There are five vendors: Lee and I (Sacred Grounds Trading Post), Ethnic Arts, Tdom Bah, George and wife from Athens and Merrick and Agnesta from Poland. We all have diverse items for sale. Johnny also has his cds for sale. The heat is relentless. Hot and humid, humid and hot. I know the guys are uncomfortable in their regalia. The crowd is like the tide -- ebbing and flowing. Not too many people show up during the day -- it is a work day and no one seems to venture out until the sun sets. We drum and sing, Johnny plays his guitar and tries to find songs ... read more

Road trip! On our way to Mt. Olympus, birth place of 12 of the “more important gods and goddesses” of ancient Greece. Not sure about the others, but I had envisioned a place of stark beauty, craggy sides of a single mountain, a vehicle road to the top, where we would all get out of the van. There would stand a partially crumbled altar where modern pilgrims still left offerings, even a stray bar of chocolate. Obviously I didn’t research Mt. Olympus before going up there; my fantasy was not even close to reality. It’s in a range of mountains (I need to look up the name of that range of mountains.) I’m not sure we even saw Mt. Olympus; no big red arrow pointed the way. There was a vehicle road to a small ... read more

Tuesday - Veria We settled in and trashed the house. Didn’t mean to, but we have soooo many suitcases. Regalia takes up at least one suitcase! Poor things. Our crap is everywhere and we’re too tired to be organized. Sophia made us lunch, and we were very grateful. Showers were a necessity -- 24 hours in a car, shoulder to shoulder, no air conditioning (did I tell you it’s hot?) -- we were overdue! Demetrius took Johnny and I to the local market to pick up some snack food (we are learning to hoard food) and breakfast items. We are always on the lookout for water, no gas, but it appears Greeks aren’t as dedicated to mineral water with bubbles as are the Germans. We ate a late lunch -- I think we snacked for dinner. ... read more

On Saturday 15th August it was Agias Panagias and a public holiday in Greece. George says he will take us for a trip to Prespa Lake in Northern Greece. The fresh water lake is bordered by Greece, Albania and Former Republic of Yugoslavia, Macedonia. We leave around 7.50am to drive to Prespa. When we were driving to Prespa, we went to a little nearby village called Agios Germanos and took photos of 2 different families having whole lambs on the souvlas going. One said they come each year to their run down family home from Germany and do it on the Saint Day of Mary ( Agios Panagias) . They offered us some tsipouro, a very strong white liquor and cut off some of the cooked lamb to have as mezee. Such hospitality to us- strangers ... read more

I pedalowanie i towarzystwo. Zdobylismy Olimp, wspielismy sie na meteory i wlasciwie jakos w naturalny sposob coraz czesciej rozmawiamy z chlopakami o wspolnej dalszej drodze. Juz nie tylko Turcja i Cypr, ale tez i Afryka sie w naszych rozmowach przewija...Doszlismy wiec do wspolnego wniosku, ze skoro tak, no to ... read more

Week 38 in Greece 2nd August George, Aleka, Sofoula and Sakis (Michael’s cousins) come out around 9am. Then Soufoula goes with George to buy some fish for lunch from Mihanonia. George takes Souflula, Sakis and me to the beach and we stay there for one hour before ringing George to come and pick us up. (what luxury, as normally Michael and I walk the 15 minutes back home) George grills the fish for lunch. Soufoula made a lovely eggplant dip for lunch and Aleka made halva, a semolina dessert. We had a lovely day talking and catching up. Michael showed our house to Sofula on Google Earth. Also we spoke to Tony on Skype and Sofoula and Takis took the opportunity to say hello too. 5th August-I show Yirrakenna how to make pavlova using eggs from ... read more

Thursday 23rd July The lights of Salonika look like a jeweled necklace when seen from a vantage point not far from Mama’s house. On the TV news last night, a Greek farmer was saying he has to grow 10 kg wheat to get sufficient money for the cost of a loaf of bread. ( 70 Euro cents for a 370gm loaf) Michael used the electric chain saw, the axe and sledge hammer to cut out the rest of the unproductive olive tree that they had cut down last Sunday. Michael said because it has lots of knots in the timber, it is relatively easy to cut into chunks whilst it is still fresh. But if you leave it to dry out, you won’t have a hope After tea, we took a photo of the two storks ... read more

Yet again, Greece never disappoints! On July 17, Aleks and I drove from Novi Sad (NS), going south through Serbia, stopping in Leskovac for some famous south-Serbian bbq and other meat delicacies, continuing through the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, FYROM, or as we refer to it, just short Macedonia, (*one of the former Yugoslav republics, now a separate country, not yet in the EU, mostly due to their name, which is also the name of a northern part of Greece (where Alexander the Great came from), which the Greek do not like at all, and henceforth, make it hard for them to become part of the EU - just my interpretation of current events - for more info, check more on Wiki, or talk to a Macedonian, both from FYROM and Greece. Sat 18th July 2009 Today our friend Joe flies in from Athens. We get to Salonika Airport about 20 minutes before Joe’s arrival and see that his flight is delayed. Apparently a go slow with the air traffic controllers in Athens. Think they are not happy with the current Government’s handling of the economic crisis. Joe said he arrived in Athens on Friday at 7.20am after his flight from Melbourne. He could not get to his hotel till 12 noon, so dropped his luggage off and walked around Athens for about 5 hours. Then went on a bus tour and a meal and show at night. He stayed at a hotel right in the Plaka area. After some lunch we catch the bus at 2.30pm to go into Salonika. Supposed to be 39 C today, so ... read more
