Thursday 21st April 2011 On the road down the plain of Thessaly to Larisa, then north towards Thessaloniki to a campsite in the shadow of Mt Olympus - the home of the gods according to greek mythology. The campsite is the nearest one open to Thessaloniki where we have arranged to meet an old Greek friend of mine from my university days - George. A few texts and phone calls later arrangements have been made and George has very generously invited us to a traditional Greek Easter celebration with him, his family and friends on Easter Sunday. I look forward eagerly to our meeting remembering happy days shared in Salford in the late 70's. Our pitch is 50m from the sea and we are surprised to find we are the only residents on site. In contrast ... read more

Hello from the land of the gods! This is just a quick update to let people know that I am here, and safe. I haven't been to sleep since Thursday morning...so I'm getting the that loopy state. This was because my flight was at 6:50am this morning out of Gatwick. To get there, I caved and did an easybus from around Earl's Court at 3am with my lovely flatmates Jenna Thrash and Leslie Hart. Never again. =) Anyway, I arrived in Thessaloniki about noon local time. This is a two hour difference from London...so six hour difference from the east coast? From there, it was pretty simple to find the hostel I am staying at for the night. However, if you think the french people are bad about people not being able to speak their language, ... read more

Thessaloniki and Litochoro. After our time in the islands with family, we flew up to Thessaloniki in Macedonia/North Greece. It was a nice change of pace and was an opportunity to see the Turkish history in that part of Greece, as well as taste alot of amazing northern Greek foods. After leaving the city we headed to Litochoro, the town at the base of Mount Olympus. We attempted to climb it, but Zeus brought all kinds of low altitude rain and fog throughout the 2 days we we were there. We hiked the first 14 kilometers from Litochoro to Prionia. This is technically not even on Mount Olympus yet, however it is the beginning of the traditional trail to the summit. Apparently, the rain and fog disappeared about 10 kilometers or so beyond where we decided ... read more

The next bunch of days in Greece were very relaxing. The first day we were there (the one where we arrived so early) we took a nap right away. While we did that Emmy and Litsa went down to the fish market to get the next couple days’ dinners. Dan woke once our hosts had returned (probably sometime around 1000 hrs). Ashley followed not too long after. Dan learned that if you have a fishy smelling fish or a floopy fish, it ain’t a fresh fish. We both learned how to clean fish, but Dan was the only one with enough guts to do it (excuse the terrible pun). For the small fish (Sardines me thinks) it was rather simple. You just pop off the whole head and pull. For the big fish (Mackerel) it was ... read more

We arrived at Anne and Ivan’s building once again. They didn’t even check to see who had buzzed, they must have been expecting us. Not necessarily…the girls were asleep and they didn’t want the phone to wake them. They graciously let us stay with them for the evening. We stayed around the house most of the next day to visit, play with the girls and use the internet. We took a quick bike ride out to the English Gardens for ein Spezi und ein Radler. We got a little lost getting there, but it didn’t really matter; it was just a trip to say that we left the house that day. There was a lot more to see in the gardens so for a relaxing day we suggest to borrow (or hire) some bikes and putz ... read more

After a couple nights in fairytale- like meteora, we headed even more north, as daddy had heard of a type of wine that interested him - Xinomavro. Whatever. It was a 3 hour drive to the first place we went to called Alpha Estate. We were met by Angelos Iatridis who was the winemaker. Daddy was expecting to get a tour/tasting from the wine maker here. Angelos took us in his car all over the vineyards, showed us around the facilities, and then daddy tasted a bunch of wine while I did some coloring and watched part of a movie. Daddy said the wine was really good, and once again, bought some wine from 2005, my birth year to keep for a long, long time. We then travelled another 1 hour to reach Naoussa, where we ... read more

Ode To Frogbert Hi Catherine & Brent Push "View Full Entry" now. It was hard having to leave poor Frogbert behind in London after he had got used to having us around for 12 days. On the flight over to Athens, I wrote the following: In May of 2006 Our daughter crossed the sea Her friends all call her Cath But to us she Catherine, or CC. In London she stayed first with her brother Good jobs were hard to find And so, she discovered, was a man Of the understanding, caring kind. And then Frogbert came into her life A cuddly froggy boy He was a valuable companion But not quite the Real McCoy. Then her brother had a brainwave He suggested to his little sis “If you want to meet Prince Charming Why not ... read more

Kalamera, or good Good Morning, Everyone Here we are in Thesasaloniki, the capital of Macedonia, on the shores of the Aegean Sea, in the far NE of Greece. This is the start of the fifth day of our 7 day tour, but already it feels like we have been travelling for about 10 days! Because we have a late start this morning, it is the first time that we have had a chance to communicate in any way. Since we will now have 3 nights in this hotel, which has free wi-fi in all the rooms, we will be able to commumicate more. We have just caught up with blog messages and emails. We are both well and have come through four days of continuous activity in high temperatures with nothing worse than some foot, knee, ... read more

OK... FINALLY a good Internet connection! So first some thoughts on Greece... Love it! Reminds me of my extended family :) Greeks sure know how to have a great time! I'm not sure though, if anyone actually works in this country... during the day, all the cafes, restaurants are always full, and people in the streets shopping. The afternoon is for siesta - we forgot about this and mistakenly go for walks during this little break to get a bite to eat - slim pickings! The one thing that strikes me is the amount of smoking that goes on! Everyone here smokes, and you can't get away from it. In restaurants, hotels, and hospitals - you name it! You go out to a restaurant or cafe, and the first thing they bring you is an ashtray. ... read more
