Total Distance Cycled: 516km The winds calmed down overnight, but we were still left with cold weather. We wore our jackets and gloves for the first time. We first had to climb over a mountain pass, which brought the temperature down much too low for comfort. We could see our breath at this point… After that, though, the rest of the day was our best so far. We cycled at least half of the day on one of Greece’s new freeways, which was quite impressive. 130kmh is the speed limit here! We even had the wind working with us now! Since we were making good time, we decided to press on from Komotini (our originally planned stop) and stop at Xanthi for the day. This would make the next day to Kavala that much easier. As ... read more

Well, the last few days have been interesting to say the least... We actually had a really good cycling day out of Alexandroupolis.... It was Sunny, Clear, a bit cold, but we had a tail wind for a change... We made it to Komotini by 11am - which is where we were supposed to spend the night, but since we were having such a great day, we decided to push on to Xanthi, which was another 50K... I'm certainly glad we did, because this morning, it was cold AND it started raining with only 15K left to our destination. We finally got into Kavala before it really started coming down. Barry was actually nice - he sat me down at a Cafe, ordered me a cappuccino and went to look for a hotel. Kavala is actually ... read more

Vlora, Albanıa. Cold much better, thank you. But now I am conscıous of how many ınsect bıtes I have sustaıned over the past few days. Fleas, mosquıtoes, and no doubt other thıngs that have been delıghted to bıte ınto my foreıgn flesh. Got up early to catch a mını busvan. Slıghtly frustratıng, as another bus arrıved headıng to the same destınatıon and seemed to fıll up faster than the one I had already paıd my fare for. Week 43 and 44 in Greece. Mon 14th Sept Neighbour Kirio George wheeled his wheel barrow to Mama's with corn cobs and some melons for our chooks from his large vegetable garden. The corn cobs were stripped down and the actual corn kernels put out to dry for the chooks to eat at a later date. Mama started them and did 20 cobs before Michael and I did the rest. I got a blister on my right hand from the repetitive action on my palm, near my thumb. When I was returning from a walk up the street, one motorist threw some stuff out for the recycling bin and I wagged my finger at him, and he must have thought I was waving to him, so gave me a nice smile and a grin. But when ... read more

Our trip to Kythira Island. 6th September. We leave from Nea Epivates , about a 15 minute walk away from Mama’s house at 6.30am and the bus carrying the group of 34 people heads towards Athens. After skirting Athens, we stopped at Corinth to see the Isthmus Canal- the canal near Corinthos allowing shipping to go from the Ionian to the Aegean Sea without having to go “the long way round”; we noticed there is now bungee jumping down the canal’s steep sides. We passed through Sparta, and eventually arrived in Neapolis, (a small town at the end of Peloponnesus) around 11pm, after the 850km traveled. We stay there overnight to catch the ferry boat in the morning over to the island of Kythira. The ferry trip takes about one and a half hours to Kythira ... read more

Today was the last day of the summer school (the actual conference starts tomorrow). Since one of the speakers today got sick and cancelled at the last minute, we had half the day off, so we went sightseeing. So without further ado - pictures. Shana Tova to Everyone... read more

Tuesday 17th August Androniki, a relative from Melbourne comes to stay with us for a few days. We go to Salonika and show her the main sights. Androniki makes some pastelli (a sesame and nut bar) to show us how to do it. She asked for a blender to crush the nuts which were to be added to the mixture, but we used a meat mallot and it seemed to work OK. We enjoyed the wonderful news that there was a new addition to the Haritonidis/ Anderton Family with the safe arrival of Isabella. On 1st September we go with Androniki and travel to Arnea so she can met her travel group. Arnea is 70km from Salonika and an old traditional town not unlike Metsovo in North Western Greece, with the stone houses and the windows ... read more

We arrived in Saloniki after 3 hours on 2 planes, and about 6 hours waiting in airports. The hotel seems pretty nice, and we met some other people from the conference, and had lunch with them. Not much else to write about, everything is fine. ... read more

Last day of the three-day event. New schedule. Jackie to pick up Mariah, David, Johnny and Wil at the house at noon. Didn’t seem a need to be there so early. And everyone was beat. Long days plus heat and humidity = drained and potentially cranky people. Lee and I slept late too back at the site. More people today. More audience participation in the intertribal and round dances. The busload from Athens waited for everyone to dress for pictures. First just us, and then everyone from Athens got into the picture. Very cute. It was the best day of the three. Mariah and I sang backup for Johnny, some of us joined in with vocables on a couple of songs. Our snake dances got longer and longer as people threw off shyness and joined ... read more

Same thing, different day. A sweet Greek woman, Vassi, appeared in our life and took over selling at our booth. And could she sell!!! I still ran back and forth from booth to sing or dance, but it was sure a relief to have someone attending our merchandise. Lunch again at the restaurant across the street. Many trips to the park concession stand for our frappes. Hot. Humid. More ebbing and flowing of people. Sunset and more people show up. We see familiar faces from yesterday. A busload from Athens is rumored to be on its way. The vendors shop at each other’s booths. Lots of picture taking by the participants as well as the festival attendees. I’m learning how to negotiate the square ceramic thingie bolted to the floor of our park-provided special washroom facilities. ... read more
