Photos from the previous blog are now up too! Well I've now arrived in Lubeck, a beautiful city indeed (thanks lonely planet) on a warm and sunny and yes windy day! The wind if anything is getting stronger, and today I had a gentle (?!) 30 miler in the morning to get here. Actually most of the way was a very nice ride following the route of an old railway line through gently undulating countryside (note even gently undulating is tough on a fully loaded tourer) with deer and rabbits frolicking in the grass either side and huge wheat fields everywhere, and almost as huge farmhouses at all the villages on the way. Well it may sound like everything has gone completely smoothly since yesterday, but not quite! Firstly having left Gluckstadt with the ambition to ... read more
Another wild campsite, this time in a field with deer running across!
A typical German farmhouse - enormous!
The first sighting of... a hill!

The journey home was anything but fun. After we found out that the airport was not in the town we thought it was, I left Inna and Alex in Unterluss and rode the train to Lubeck. By the time I got to Lubeck it was about 10:00 pm. I then waited for a bus to take me out to the airport where I intended to spend the night since I didn't want to pay 65 euro for a hotel room for what would amount to about 5 hours. So at about 11 I got out to the airport, walked up to the doors, pulled, and discovered that they must lock the airport for the night. The bus was, of course, gone. I tried every door about 10 times before giving up and going to the bus ... read more

The day II in Hamburg & Lübeck. Today's target: Hamburg! We took an U-bahn (Metro train) from Ahrensburg to Hamburg because it was the most convenient way of travelling to downtown Hamburg. It took about 40 minutes to get to downtown Hamburg. The city of Hamburg lies at the junction of the River Elbe with the Rivers Alster and Bille. The city center lies around two lakes, the Binnenalster ("Inner Alster") and the Aussenalster ("Outer Alster"). We started out by visiting....Lego store! Surprise! It was a nice big store with all sorts of Lego toys and things. Daniela-the-Lego-fan bought a blue Lego man T-shirt. We others just shopped with our eyes. Our official first visiting place was Hamburg Rathaus. What a building! We heard later that it holds one room more than the Buckingham Palace...and not ... read more

Lübeck in Northern Germany was one of the richest Hanseatic States. They were traders dating back to the 1400's and probably even before that. If you get here make sure you go to eat at the Schiffergesellschaft Restaurant. I grew up in Plymouth, Massachusetts and I know an old house or two that dates back to 1621 or so. But I have to tell you that I got chills sitting at the same tables where sailors and sea merchants sat over 500 years ago. This eating house has been used since the 1500's. Sailors would sit at tables on the main floor of the restaurant while the owners would sit up at a table on a dias or little stage. They would nod or shake their finger at anyone who was getting a little out ... read more

I am so lucky to be able to travel off the beaten path. Today, though the usual mix of a little bit of sun, lots of heavy clouds and intermittent downpours my hosts, Horst and Waltraud Junglaus from Hamburg offered to drive us( my friend Val and I) to Travemunde and Lübeck. First, we stopped to see some of the ships ( mostly ferries) from Sweden and Finland unload their cargo of trucks. It was like watching Lucy and Ethel by the conveyor belt except these weren't chocolates rolling steadily downhill but truck after truck after truck. These trucks brings good into Germany and then they are transported all over Europe. It was fascinating to watch. We continued on the seaside resort town of Travemunde. There are great walking and biking trails that go on for ... read more

It could be a typical German bar, with an international touch. The place seems rather popular, so I enter. It is a nice place. Not a place for single people, but since I don't know of anything else in Lubeck, I stay. The beer is good. The music is good. They give away little bottles of alcohol, something green. A nice little souvenir. A girl walks around with a little basket. She gives out balloons and candy. Maybe not your highest priority on a Friday night, but a nice gesture. Nobody talks to me, and I keep a low profile. After they play "99 Luftballoons" I leave. Not because I don't like the song, I do, more due to the fact that this bar visit has reached its peak; a low but interesting peak...... read more
