Dresden 9 years after our first visit to Dresden, we were both expecting to see some changes to the old East German city. The last time we visited, the city was still suffering from History, most notoriously a British 'visit' during the 2nd World War - much of the old town was somewhat shabby and in need of serious repair. Today, whilst some work continues, progress has been made, and the centre of the city is now the bustling tourist mecca it's history deserves. We were staying in a hostel in the Neustadt area of town, our relatives in the city not yet having found proper accomodation. The Neustadt is across the river from the historic centre, but retains a character very much of its own, reminding us of areas of east Berlin the way they ... read more

Die Fanta 4令兩大危機各出現一次小爆發,但又不得不買…… in köln, i saw on leaflet that Die Fantastischen Vier will held a live show on the day after i leave for hongkong, ok, forget it; in augsburg i saw on advertisement that there would be a concert i... read more

OK, boys and girls, lets take out our maps of Europe and review the journey so far. On the far right, you’ll find the Black Sea. Just to the left of it, you’ll see Romania. Now keep your finger going left thru Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia (if your map says Yugoslavia, throw the map out…..like the Yugo in the USA, that country does not exist anymore), Hungary, Slovakia (remember those countries that start with “SL” and end in “IA”), Czeck Republic (another reason to throw that map out is if its still shows Czechoslovakia) and finally Germany (which has been one big united country since 1990…so if the map shows 2 Germanys…again toss it out….tho I did like the East German national anthem). Right now, I’m in a city called Gorlitz which probably is not on ... read more

After an uneventful flight back to Cairo, we took solace in the knowledge that we'd only be in Egypt for a day and a half. Coming back actually proved to be fairly hassle-free, a combination of Cairo's relative laidbackness and good luck. However, our return did provide us with a couple of classic Egyptian exchanges. First, when we got to the airport, we couldn't find the bus stop. We went back inside to ask at the information desk. It went something like this: "Go outside and there's a sign for where to wait." "Actually, we were just there and didn't see it. Where exactly is it?" "Well, maybe you should ask someone." "Um, OK." Even better was the customer service at the Egypt Air office. After we checked into the hostel, we realized that some things ... read more

1.6.06 0040 Good Night, and Good Luck My goal for when I have to wake up at the ungodly hour of 0500 is to wake up sweating… 2245 After this the rest is just bullshit… My 11th grade class this morning was talking about stereotypes. It was interesting to hear what people had to say about America…most of them were true though. But then again maybe not. One kid said, “most Americans are fat.” I wouldn’t disagree with that statement. Another kid said, “Americans eat fast food all the time.” Yet again, I wouldn’t disagree with that. I’m not fat and honestly can’t remember the last time that I ate fast food…not a big fan. I am not that discriminatory about different foods but I am when it comes to quality. Hey, this body is a ... read more

b21.5.06 2254 hours Welcome to the doghouse/b So I learned that being a “cute” girl in Deutschland has its advantages and disadvantages. Disadvantages in that I can’t go into certain places without getting a bit of a threat in a negative direction. You know, the hole in the wall places that the locals frequent that I seem to love oh so much. Nein. Skinheads. Tables being thrown. Ms. Elizalady’s life in danger “this is your last chance to live.” Yikes. Ok so I suppose I will stray from those places for the time being. Because I don’t want “you will cry. You will scream but I won’t be able to protect you.” The advantages came today when I ran into two fellas from the states that were Mormons. I couldn’t find anyone when I went to ... read more

5.15.06 0956 hours After many a mix up of flights here and there…Germany, I sail. Missed the first flight…maybe on purpose. The second flight took longer than expected and I ended up getting bumped to even another flight. A bit overwhelmed. Sat next to a super nice lady on the flight from Phila. Her son is about to graduate, just turned 21, crazy math/geology major, 4.0 blah blah. Sounds impressive. Since my flight got changed I didn’t get my oh so kosher meal but I did get a veggie meal as they somehow ran out of the meats. And I must say I take back everything bad I said about U.S. Airways as they got me drunk on the flight with Dewar’s and Merlot. They kept the cocktails FLOWING. I am talking service here people! Allison and Grady got married on a beautiful spring day in Germany. The sun was shining bright and the birds were churping - beautiful sights and sounds! The whole week before had been dedicated to preparing for it - preparing wedding favors, the programs, the music, talking about flowers and decorations ... the whole 9 yards. As the maid of honor I had the special responsibility of being available for Allison's specific requests - however big or small. Being in a foreign country with a foreign language means this is no small task! I was really proud when I was able to go all the way to the photo shop on bike to buy an album that Allio wanted to give Grady as a gift, pick one out and purchase it when no one in the ... read more

Joel and I took the plane and train to Dresden, GR. We woke up and caught the taxi at an insane time - 4:30 AM! Yikes! No one in their right mind should be awake at that time - although it does make for a quiet London. We arrived early to Dresden, so we caught my family off guard. I spotted my sister in the huge train station and called out and started walking towards her. She was shocked and smiling that I was there already. So nice to see her again after a number of months. My dad was checking the train schedule to find the landing dock number so he soon after joined us and my parents were all hugs. It was nice to be reunited with familiar people in an unfamiliar place! Grady, ... read more

We got a lift through the Mitfahrzentrale from Berlin to Dresden. Our driver, Steffen Rudig is a citizen of the former DDR and although he didn't really speak any english, we were able to converse in german somewhat and he answered all the questions we had on what life was like in the DDR before the fall of the Berlin Wall, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and his hopes for the future of former East Germany. We arrived in Dresden about 9pm and found our hostel, the Lollis Homesatay with relative ease. The hostel is small and all the rooms are individually decorated in some quite strange fashions. Our dorm was the 'religion room' and featured various murals of the mother mary and a Jewish Passover meal together with a copy of both the ... read more
