Leaving Amsterdam behind us we settled into Ollie for our journey into Germany. Woolly says – I was looking forward to seeing more of Germany. It looked just like England with fields of bobbing wheat, trees of all shapes and sizes and corn, miles and miles of corn. Now I do like a corn on the cob although the butter makes my tusks greasy but with the number of fields full of the product the Germans must be supplying the rest of the world. As fields gave way to lush green forests I kept having to shout Farht! We asked Woolly to keep an eye out for our Austfarht to leave the road and it certainly provided him with hours of fun shouting out. This is one of the examples of the differences in languages where ... read more

As we awoke this morning we almost thought that the fine, sunny and warm days had deserted us, as our first look at the early morning sky over Zwolle was one of heavy grey overcast. However, the weather was just fooling us as although the clear skies had been replaced by overcast the temperature was still very warm. There had been thunderstorms in Britain over the past 24 hours and that weather usually finds its way to Holland so we can expect to get some rain on our way south to a half way, overnight stop, to a longer stay we have planned for a location on the Moselle River about 50km from Koblenz. We had had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay with Wim and Diny but it was time to move on. We enjoyed ... read more

1:12 We've made our way from Brussels into Germany now. We got as far as Köln, where we made a pit stop to sing mass in the cathedral there. It wasn't our best performance, but any means - there were tuning issues and such fun, but we still managed to pull off the the pieces we needed to sing. The cathedral is just as lovely as it was four years ago; it's a shame that we didn't have more time to explore... Or more properly that I didn't have time to explore any other bits of the town this time instead of the cathedral. We're back on the bus for the long haul now, on our way to Halberstadt, where we have a charity concert to sing as part of the festival this evening. It's going ... read more

So, we have left Hessen and entered North Rhine - Westphalia! We spent one full day in Paderborn self-guiding ourselves on a historical city tour. The weather was not kind to us and we tried hard to imagine how pretty the town would look in the sunshine, especially the park areas where the Pader river flows. The river originates from over 200 springs which flow under the middle of the city and is Germany's shortest river. The river flow in many areas is so narrow that it looks more like a canal but very pretty with low overhanging trees and plenty of ducks swimming with the current. Despite the city having been heavily bombed in WW2 (and with the help of reconstruction) there are some interesting buildings of the romanesque, gothic and weser renaissance (lots of ... read more

If you’re after an action-packed blog entry then may I suggest you move on now. There’ll be nothing on offer other than of the mundane variety – no news to report other than I’m in another hemisphere. The weather seems to have chased me down from south to north – it’s cold and wet. And Duesseldorf is as I left it two years ago – a big construction site. Flight went as well as any long distance flight can be expected to. Although it was nice not to have drama of checking in a bicycle and all the accompanying palava. And super nice to have had a lift to the airport – thanks to those involved that made it happen especially on such a cold and wet evening. Not sure if it’s a symptom of getting ... read more

Finally, we found a Starbucks, we are back in Cologne and in view of the magnificent DOM. (may14/13) On Andernach... getting there on the boat was a wonderful experience, peacefully floating along the Rhine, smoothly, the hills and wineries outside our window, we had three naps that day, that was before 1:30 pm when we arrived in Andernach where the volunteer fire brigade was celebrating 125 years, imagine that, how old is Canada again? Just amazing, and we snagged this interesting picture... when it comes to Germany, the boys have got it covered...(photo) All in all, we found it to be a dark place, dark as in the feel of the place, we walked to their *claim to fame* the Turun, an old old (1440) watch tower which we had to climb of course. After Cologne ... read more

On the 5th of May, I was invited to my godchild’s Holy Communion in Cologne. No matter whether you believe in God or not, I found the celebration quite impressive, that’s why I would like to share it with you. My godchild Benedikt attends the Domsingschule, a primary school with the purpose of educating the children that will later on sing in the Cathedral Choir in Cologne. It was not easy to get him into this school. Of course, you need to be Catholic, but also, he and his parents had to go through a number of assessments before he was finally accepted. Already his school enrolment had taken place in the spectacular Cologne Cathedral. The fact that the Holy Communion took place in the Cologne Cathedral is so special because the Cathedral does not have ... read more

Kristin generously gave me the login and password to her travel blog so that I could practice my hand at blogging without having to create my own profile. What a good sister. :) Let me begin by saying that I thought I would write a couple of blogs about where I was and what I was doing and have pictures to both illustrate and make you all jealous...but like a dumb dumb I can't seem to figure out Carly's MacBook Pro. Apparently when trying to import photos you have to add them to a drop box. Unfortunately I am one of those people who takes a million photos, so of course there is not enough space to import the photos to Carly's computer :( This of course means that you will just have to picture in ... read more
