Leaving Amsterdam behind us we settled into Ollie for our journey into Germany.
Woolly says – I was looking forward to seeing more of Germany. It looked just like England with fields of bobbing wheat, trees of all shapes and sizes and corn, miles and miles of corn. Now I do like a corn on the cob although the butter makes my tusks greasy but with the number of fields full of the product the Germans must be supplying the rest of the world. As fields gave way to lush green forests I kept having to shout Farht!
We asked Woolly to keep an eye out for our Austfarht to leave the road and it certainly provided him with hours of fun shouting out. This is one of the examples of the differences in languages where young children and some adults think it’s highly amusing to keep shouting Fart, but in Germany they have no choice.
Woolly says – There also seem to be lots of Bad people here as many places have the name Bad, I thought that maybe it’s where they send all the meanies until Jo checked the meaning
in the phrase book and found out it meant bath. Having thought this over these town might be for people who need more washing than others!
With Woolly pondering the possibilities of the German language we made our way to Ladbergen for our first night’s stay, we had noticed a few points of interest on the map and thought that if we set up first we could then go and investigate. Camping Waldsee was a large site with mainly static vans, they do have some touring pitches but they are on a field over five minutes’ walk away from the amenities. I smiled nicely at the man on reception and he allowed us to pitch among the permanent homes. For 14.70 Euros (approximately £13.00 GBP) – sorry no price on motorhomes as they weren’t displayed – we got good basic facilities a short walk from the lake.
Woolly says – pitching took quite a while having got half the tent up torrential rain started to hammer down leaving me in Ollie and Jo and Ian sheltering in the tent. Once the rain had stopped we managed to get everything inside before it started again,
is it the rainy season in Germany?
Our plans started falling to pieces with the weather and by the time the rain appeared to have stopped completely it was too late to go anywhere. To cheer Woolly up we wandered round to the campsite petting zoo and spent a pleasant half an hour trying to save him from being eaten by the goats.
Woolly says – those goats where vicious, one nearly had my tail while another started on my trunk! The evening had become very pleasant and warm as we walked the short path to the lake we were more than happy to settle for a couple of beers and watching the birds landing and taking off on the water. Settling down for the night proved to be the downfall of the site, with loud voices talking all around us and kids screeching we tried for sleep, it was not to be, fireworks became the next noise pollutant closely followed by a plane taking off, we started to giggle at the situation. Finally the camp feel still and quiet and sleep became the order of the day.
We made a
good start the next morning and were bouncing down the track to reception by 9.30am. Our plan was to head south east and see what we could find on route, as plans do it unravelled quickly. Ollie had developed a squeak which turned into a grinding sound which got persistently worse. Stopping to check out our concerns it was easy to see that the brake pads on the rear passenger side had worn away.
Woolly says – you could cut the atmosphere with a knife, Jo and Ian were livid!! Having had Ollie serviced in the UK you would think that it would have been picked up. Ian re-programmed James to find the nearest garage which was easy to find except being 1.30pm on a Saturday afternoon the whole of Germany had closed for the weekend. Ian went off in search of help and came back eventually with a piece of paper with the name of garage, phone number etc which would be open on Monday and would hopefully and most importantly have the right pads for our Honda. With no other option we got the camping books out and found the nearest site to the garage
and with the heat now poised at 32 degrees we headed cautiously off.
With only a few pitches left at Camping Naumburg we got set up and ready for a two night stay. It has it compensations as we found ….
Woolly says – Naumburg is really pretty with its brown and white houses and shops and we enjoyed a walk round, I especially enjoyed the blue berry ice cream sundae that Jo ordered and was still licking off my tusks as we made our way back to the tent. Tomorrow we go to the POOL and it has a SLIDE…..I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!
