Fondée au ... read more

Up early to catch the train to Potsdam to do a tour and see the Sansouci Palace and Park. Upon arriving for our train at the Berlin Central Station we discovered that there were multiple trains to Potsdam, even some of the locals we pick up near our hotel. Oh well, over planning is OK. We arrived early in Potsdam and walked to a park near where we were meeting our guide, had a nice cappuccino at a café that favored 60s US music. Fun. We walked the area and were impressed with the small signage that keeps the area looking neat and attractive while allowing for commerce. Met up with our guide, Till from Seg2Go, and had a nice practice session in the local park before going out on the road. We settle on the ... read more

In ... read more

Axels cousin, Claudia picked us up and we went to Potsdam. Potsdam is the capital and largest city of the German federal state of Brandenburg. It directly borders the German capital, Berlin, and is part of the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. It is situated on the River Havel 24 kilometres southwest of Berlin's city centre. There we went to the Sanssouci. Sanssouci is the summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The palace was designed/built by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff between 1745 and 1747 to fulfill King Frederick's need for a private residence where he could relax away from the pomp and ceremony of the Berlin court. We had ice cream on the grounds then went to Claudia’s home. Under construction ... read more

Geo: 52.404, 13.0397Bugger, I accidentally deleted the previous Potsdam entry. Now I need to redo it, grrr!Today we drove 45min to Potsdam to catch a two-hour Segway tour. It was too hot to do another walking tour. We asked the dozy staff about where to park, but ended up getting a ticket! The fine is only €10 but now we have to work out how to pay it.Prices in Germany are similar or cheaper to those in Oz. A $10 parking ticket in Oz? Not likely. They have rows and rows (walls even) of packaged cheese slices and salami-type meats in the supermarket. Robyn commented it reminded her of the skit by Borat where he repeatedly asks the incredibly polite staff member "Is this cheese, is this cheese, etc". We saw fresh baked bread rolls for ... read more

Torstain olin varannut Potsdamille. Pesin illalla pyykit.... read more

Geo: 52.397, 13.0586Today I took a day trip to Potsdam. A pretty little town about 25km outside of Berlin. This is the place that the Kaisers built their palaces. There are and awful lot of palaces out there. The first place we were taken to was the Palace of Frederik II, otherwise known as Frederik the Great. Freddie launched a war on Russia, Austria, France and Sweden known as the seven year war. At the end of the war his enemies whispered that he was broke. So to prove them wrong he built this lavish palace in Potsdam. It was truly beautiful, with hundreds of statues, two freestanding palaces across the driveway for guests and beautifully manicured gardens, complete with fountains. He never lived in it but he proved his point. Just down the road was ... read more

I started out this morning wanting to see the martin luther memorial church, sadly when I got there after a 30 minute train ride, it was closed, on sunday?! Oddly enough the church is curreently being used by a catholic church while theirs is undergoing strenuous work. So I had to backtrack back to Friedrichstraße and off to Potsdam! Potsdam was sucha beautiful baroque city. A stroll through the park there is a must, the Prussian style park was under some construction, closed mondays and sadly when I got there they were closed, apparently the close at 5.30 and I reached it at 5.35. The architecture of the buildings in natur though was simply breathtaking, the one thing that still surprises me is the excessivly large slugs that go around, they seem to be endless and ... read more

We managed to get up early (not much drinking the day before) , hooray! We moved to the new room (a private one this time) and left for Potsdam. It takes about 40-50 minutes to get there on S-Bahn lines – we got to the Potsdam Hauptbahnhof. Some guides suggested getting a bus to get to the main attraction in Potsdam – the Sanssouci Park, but there is no need – it’s perfectly within the walking distance. On our way there we went through the Dutch Quarter – a tiny bit of the Netherlands is always welcome. The park itself was full of people – a bit surprising since it was January. We didn’t go into the palace, there were people queuing, but we have decided to skip it. Instead we went to a small Botanic ... read more
