Our last day – we wanted to make as much of it as we could, our train was not due before 18 or so. We started with the East Side Gallery – I was glad I’ve seen it already before, all murals were in much worse condition than before, covered with some crappy tags, such a waste. We found remains of the Jewish Cemetery at Grosse Hamburger Strasse – we walked past it a few times and missed it – not surprising as there is almost nothing left of it. We also got back to the Topography of Terror to see the second part of the exhibition – also the outdoor bit, as it wasn’t dark yet. As the last thing we walked past the Berliner Dom and the Museum Island. We ended up our trip ... read more

OK, there we go again. As you can imagine, we didn't get up in the morning to go to the Reichstag Building (for those who want to visit: reserve a free visit for a specific time through the official site and DON'T get drunk the night before), in fact we didn't get up in the morning at all. We barely had any day time to get to the Mauer Park (and the flea market there – plenty of people) together with the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse. I can't say I "like" this exhibition - there is nothing to like, every time I see it I find it almost impossible to believe that all this happened – all this is just unbelievable, and yet so real. That’s why I always found this memorial better than ... read more

After we got back to Berlin we had another shot on finding the gas lamp alley in Tiergarten – it’s actually very close to the Tiergarten Station. Not every lamp was working, but it was still a nice walk. There were a lot of rabbits there – I wonder if they are descendants of those who lived around the Wall? And later in the evening… Well, we have repeated the Thursday story. There was an Irish Bar, there was some mulled wine (preferably from the tiny stand on Auguststraße/Oranienburger Straße), we got back to Rosenthalen Straße 39 and had a few there, we went to another Irish Bar… and then used one of many bars that have this “happy hour” type of thing with all cocktails for the set prize – 3.5 EUR in this case. ... read more

Europe » Germany » Brandenburg » Potsdam January 4th 2014

We managed to get up early (not much drinking the day before) , hooray! We moved to the new room (a private one this time) and left for Potsdam. It takes about 40-50 minutes to get there on S-Bahn lines – we got to the Potsdam Hauptbahnhof. Some guides suggested getting a bus to get to the main attraction in Potsdam – the Sanssouci Park, but there is no need – it’s perfectly within the walking distance. On our way there we went through the Dutch Quarter – a tiny bit of the Netherlands is always welcome. The park itself was full of people – a bit surprising since it was January. We didn’t go into the palace, there were people queuing, but we have decided to skip it. Instead we went to a small Botanic ... read more

At first we had in mind going to Potsdam, but getting back to the hostel in the middle of the night and waking up in the middle of the day made us change our plans a bit. I've decided to track down a few squats and street art - we walked around Kreutzigerstrasse and then towards the Aleksanderplatz. To be fair, during our stay we mainly spend time in the former East Berlin - guilty as charged, I've always used to choose the less representative (and usually more interesting) parts of cities I've visited. The Christmas/New Year's Market was still there - with mulled wine and plenty of heavy German food (not a country for vegetarians... no, I'm kidding, Balkans were much worse in that respect). We walked back to Hackescher Markt to see some street ... read more

It is a little embarrassing, but... Well. Last year was quite a good year with respect to travels and countries visited, but absolutely crap when it comes to everything else. Let's hope 2014 will be better - and let's start again. The first journey of the year was a short stay in Berlin with N.. I've been there once already, but I've really really really wanted to go back there. I wanted to show N. places I liked, and so we mostly saw what I’d seen before – with few exceptions though. We started in Warsaw, after a five hour train journey we arrived at Berlin Ostbahnhof. It's January - so before we sorted out the hostel (A&O, Boxhagener Str. 73) it was already dark and not a good time to explore the city (walk around ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Howth April 3rd 2013

03/04/2013 - Howth Our roommates at the hostel turned out to be rather noisy and generally unkind (seriously, kids, if you go back to the dorms at 1 a.m., you're quiet as mice and definitely don't spend another hour discussing this nice guy at the bar, what a cliché!), we got out of the room as soon as we could (as we couldn't sleep anyway), feeling a bit tired. I guess that's why it took us ages to find the entrance to the Connolly Station. Well, we didn't in fact find it - we got there through the car park from the back. Serves us right for not taking the tram. Our goal for today was Howth - the suburb of Dublin. The DART train goes there twice per hour, the journey takes about 25 minutes ... read more

So, let's start. I hope to gradually describe my previous trips and travels and also to be rather systematic with the trips that are yet to come. I already have one "analogue" diary - written by hand, with photos developed in the old-fashioned photo lab, something I can carry with me when I travel. But... maybe it'd be nice to actually share my experiences with someone? We will see how it goes. *** 02/04/2013 - Warsaw -> Dublin There was a heavy snowfall on Sunday before I left from Warsaw to Dublin (no White Easter jokes please) and I was pretty worried that there may be some problems with the flights. Fortunately there were none and even with the whole de-icing procedure we still got to Dublin early and had to hear the stupid Ryanair fanfare... ... read more
